Many of the supposed "British people" you hear in video games are FAKES, and today I'm gonna teach you how to identify the difference between a Yanglish impostor, and a born-and-raised Brit. No hate to voice actors, but we've simply been oppressed for too long.

My favorite is when there's an American movie that's in English but takes place in a non-English speaking country (e.g. Ancient Rome, Persia) and they decide everyone needs an English accent. So you have American actors speaking a language their characters wouldn't speak in an accent that the actors can't actually do

That's why I liked Death of Stalin. It starred a bunch of American actors portraying Russians and they just spoke English in their own, natural accents, instead of putting on a goofy Russian accent to make it more "realistic?"

I believe it goes even deeper than just using the proper VO actors. The accents given to certain characters actually reflect the area and social standing they come from, which in turn reflect historical and contemporary social and geopolitical similarities between the UK and in-game lore.

@@undercoverduck In 2, the blades have a variety of American accents, and I would have to spoil one of the game's biggest twists to explain why. This trend goes all the way through to Xenoblade 3 with Sena and at least two other characters I can think of. I love how intentional it is, beyond just "we wanted them to sound different". I believe the American accents are mostly fake, put on by the English voice actors, but I guess the accent slips kinda make sense too? Even though blades are born with American accents, they live around people with English accents their entire lives, so I guess they would pick up a few eccentricities.

Any time I see ‘me’ used in place of ‘my’, my brain automatically defaults to the accent of Hellsing Abriged’s Anderson.

Benezia’s accent is a reference to Sirtis’ accent on TNG, which is famously very bad and basically completely made up, just the producers wanted something ‘foreign.’ She’s got a cockney accent naturally and was being passed over for sounding too poor. You can hear the accent slip in TNG, especially in the movies when the material gets bad, it’s very funny. She’s great she’s fairly open about how these decisions were forced by producers and directors and are not ideal, and her Benezia accent is clearly her doing her Troi voice, again. So there’s a little more backstory to this one that people might not know!

Some of these voices in this video didn’t even sound English to me until this video pointed it out. It makes me think that that maybe the best “Villain monologue voice” is a mish mash accent of American and English. Sylvanas from Warcraft I think falls into this category too.

Super interesting. As someone from the Southern US I’m also in a region that has its accent fetishized, or more often mocked, even though there are tons of regional variants. Also, seems like no one will hire an actual Southern person to do the voice acting so it’s almost always way off.

The thing I find the most glaring is that Americans don't understand how we pronounce the letter "o", they always seem to really overdo it Also it's fun watching them play Souls games and getting confused by the various regional accents, pretty sure I saw one person think a Welsh accent was some variety of Scottish???

I always felt like something was off in these voice performances because they didn't sound like any accent I knew of, and I never even pinned them as trying to imitate English accents. Thank you for providing me with an explanation from an English perspective Also, Xenoblade 2 was the game that completely opened my eyes to how accents should be handled in media. The other Xenoblade games do a decent job, but 2 specifically has different empires using different accents, between Welsh, Australian, American, Scottish, and a few types of English, and you can immediately tell where someone is from based on their voice.

This is why I love Level-5, they’ll use English voice actors at the first opportunity and even get some of the far out accents like Geordie and Scouse into their games without apology (but still hiring Americans where needed, it’s really quite easy)

Xenoblade chronicles X (a spinoff) feature usa american only characters (from los angeles) and they are all voiced by USA americans but the mainline games (1, 2, 3, torna) are always english. xenoblade games made me fall in love with english accent dubs, I want MORE of those! also i didnt know the duke was supposed to be/sound english lmaooo great video btw!

As an American, never even registered the RE8 characters as English-adjacent honestly, just sounded like a bunch of weirdos. Funnily enough since you showed the game in the video, Xenoblade Chronicles 3 uses some UK actors to portray Australian accents. It sounds strange in ways I struggle to articulate as someone who is neither from the UK nor Australia. Look up Monica and Ghondor from the game if you're interested in hearing it.

Another thing with British characters is having the portrayed accent/place of origin clash with another. For example I remember people meming pokemon sword and sheilds main character with both "wo'ah" and shagging sheep, the countless xenoblade misconceptions lol and the classic bloodborne is set in london

Funny thing is if xenoblade was original planned to release in America they definitely wouldn’t have even thought of giving almost all the characters english accents and would have only had a few select characters speak in yanglish but because Nintendo of America had such little faith that the game would sell well in the states they only planned to release the game in europe and japan so the dub was actually made in england with local talent and now xenoblade is known for its quirk of having all the voices actors be British

It's even worse if you're Scottish specifically. It's rare as fuck we get any actual Scottish VA's to play Scottish characters. Morrigan in Marvel vs Capcom was the first time they actually attempted to give her a Scottish accent since she is actually Scottish but the actual actor hired is Welsh/American and it makes my ears bleed. Dragon Quest 8 and 11 uses British actors from all over in a cool way. While the setting is fantasy it actually designates different regions of the game to have specific accents. So any character from a particular town might have a Cockney accent while in another region everyone there may sound more Yorkshire. It actually helps make the land you explore feel much bigger and more lived in with the fact each area has a unique sound and each party member has a mixture of differing accents. Sure they don't ALWAYS sound good but it is cool they tried and most of the actors are TV actors so you don't hear many of the familiar video game VA's who appear in everything these days (Troy Baker etc)

It's a pasttime of my mates and I to always take the piss out of Americans doing bad English accents. You can tell sometimes they've never actually heard any real English person because it's always just a worse version of what you hear in games & movies. Brilliant vid, glad it got suggested! I agree that it can be pretty funny but it also goes both ways. When I hear an English person try to do an American accent it usually sounds strange to my American ear and they usually go for the exaggerated Texan or New York accents to boot. Trying to replicate a foreign accent convincingly is REALLY hard to do. As this video showed even professional actors can struggle with it.

She switched a lot between very posh pronounced Southern English accent and then into a very strong Northern Yorkshire-type accent at random. To be fair, I can't tell myself when an accent that's not mine is bad - apparently the Scottish guy's accent was atrocious as well but I didn't notice that as much!

I will say Capcom hired not only English actors for The Great Ace Attorney, but they hired Japanese-English actors for the main Japanese roles (the games take place between 19th century Japan and England)

To be fair i think for a horror game having accents mix and melt into each other kind of works if only cause you know. Horror. having the accent bounce all over the place makes it so there isn't really any regional stereotype in the Anglo-phone world you can place them on to or even place them to if the character is actually from the Anglo-sphere(which last time i checked none of the charactes in the resi game in question are so what do they even have accents from any of those places?)

Something I remember a lot from animation VA stuff is that a lot of limits come from unions. If the union the company making the game/show/other example is making and the union the Ideal VA works for, then they're out of luck.

Funny how Xenoblade only has actual British voice actors because the first game wasn't going to release in the US at all originally. The original had a limited release of the European version in the US because it wouldn't cost much to do so. It worked out for the best because it definitely helps the series stand out, but it was an accident the whole time. Also, kinda wish you'd brought up Fire Emblem's Tiki because it's baaaaaaaad. It legitimately sounds like somebody doing a purposefully bad Cockney orphan impression. Some real "Shoine ya shoes for ya, guvna?" type stuff. It's especially egregious because nobody else in the series has an accent.

Idk, a lot of those strike me as almost TransAtlantic accents- that made up 1930s Kinda English Kinda American haute-couture fake accent; fairly fitting for the nebulous origin of figures like The Duke. It strikes me as one of those things, like how historical fiction isn't SUPER accurate wrt speaking patterns or how nobody can concievably use Tiffany in medieval settings even though it's an ACTUALLY medieval name because it SOUNDS too modern. A lot of these settings aren't in England AS SUCH, but set somewhere in Europe-but-inconcievably-Given-Englesque-Accents-Because-We-Can't-Very-Well-Let-Them-ALL-Sound-Greek/Italian/French/etc-Can-We? There's also characters like Benezia, for whom neither accent is particularly appropriate because she's an alien (does ME use Trek style translators?) It just leads to this melange of broad expectations for an Acceptibly European/Refined Accent over English Accent Fidelity. It sucks that y'all lose jobs over it, though; and games like Dragon Quest that AFAIK *do* hire English VAs are cool-- but IDK it's like how some sword afficionados get rankled over unrealistic anime or video game swords when those works take suspension of disbelief as integral to their aesthetic language.

The amount of times I've tried to figure out if a character was supposed to be Australian or English in American/American dubbed media is staggering haha. At least having an accent that slides between outback and English isn't uncommon in Australia, but the sprinklings of Americanisms only work if you are voicing a teen that watches too much reality tv.

I'd argue that the accent isn't supposed to be an english accent. It's supposed to be a "proper" accent. The characters are supposed to be pronouncing everything they say "correctly" which explains why they pronounce hard rs and convert the "æ" sounds into "ah" sounds

The mid-Atlantic accent still exists in a lot of American-produced media. It was created as an attempt to make American accents sound more upper crust. Very, very few people ever spoke with it naturally and yet it persists for some US-produced content. Zelda's accent in BotW is certainly a dud but Lady Dimitrescu in RE8 doesn't seem to be a genuine attempt at an English accent at all, but instead a mid-Atlantic accent given that her style of dress is evocative of the time period in which that accent was popular. In which case I would deem it a success. The Duke would TECHNICALLY fall under mid-Atlantic but I'm confident that's just a happy coincidence, and it's actually just a bad English accent. Interestingly Xenoblade 2's dub uses different accents for every region you travel to. One of those regions has American accents, but the principal character from this place speaks with a mid-Atlantic accent. I have to assume that this is a 100% deliberate choice given that the actor was an actual American and every other character from the place speaks with an American accent.

Final Fantasy XIV has some great examples of this; as part of the first major expansion they recast practically every single voice actor for the English dub to basically a full cast of British actors as far as I'm aware. I'd recommend looking up some comparisons if you want to really hear the difference.

just to followup on the Xenoblade British voice actors thing, Dragon Quest also does this perfectly, to the point that Scottish accented characters also have dialogue that represents that their dialects! also, in Ni-No Kuni 1, an otherwise mid JRPG, the side kick character is a middle aged welsh man who also speaks in English-Welsh idioms, and it fucking owns!

Just as a counter-perspective: English people are very good at identifying things that aren't English accents but a lot of them are pretty bad at identifying the things that _are_ American. This isn't really all that surprising but I think it's something a lot of Brits don't realise? Like they'll happily think yeah, Americans can't tell the difference between an English accent and an American doing one and all but not really think that applies to them. Now, if anyone is reading this (something which I do not count on), they may wonder why I say this at all. Well, I've seen commenters say that they thought certain characters in the video were American and I think that it'd be good for people to give it some thought from the opposite perspective, but also I'm TIRED of EVERYONE THINKING that I'm from fuCKING AMERI- I'm English, by the way. And in case the creator sees this, sorry, not targeted at you, I just wanted to vent into the void of a comment section.

Game developers don't care about accent accuracy. Brazilian characters will have either a typical generic "foreign accent" with hard Ts and Ds or they just outright give them a spanish accent, which is way more atrocious.

We all enjoy making fun of one another, I suppose. I guess they say imitation is the sincerest form of flattery, even when the imitation doesn''t go that well. Only thing I don't get is, why do you guys never say the letter R when it's written and also interject it into every other word that doesn't have it? Did the letter R's English HQ miss a memo?

The best thing is... looking at how many English, British, UK people, and American people there are... the most-spread accent(s) around the world is "other foreigners that learned English as second langauge" :D
