I think people forget that good critique kinda requires creative labour and it easy. I mean you can just list off bullet points of things you like and dont like and call it critique (you can also make that format creative btw) but in the long run, that isnt actually going to change anything. Critique thats good and dynamic gets remembered and does something different, it might even actually change media going forward.

the worst part about the short hop aerial mechanic is that we have like 5 different button dedicated to jumping on the controller, it would've been way easier to simply dedicate one of those 36 buttons to just short up

I don’t know if I have autism. When I mentioned it to my therapist, she asked me why I want to know. And I don’t know. The segment where you talked about just how confusing getting a diagnosis was- and why or if they even matter- hit me hard. I’ve been going crazy lately, hyperfixating on autism all the while feeling horrible and guilty for it. I’ve been diagnosed with adhd, why isn’t that enough? Why do I want more tests? Do I just need more support? How do I even get that? Needless to say- it’s been a headache. But I’m happy this video exists. I too have found myself in some pretty dark places because of my struggles. I imagine a world where I’m not around anymore quite often. And while your video isn’t just going to make that all go away, I appreciate your words.

This game makes you feel good once you can reliably make twin headed thunder dragon, only for kaiba to outright play blue eyes white dragon and millenium shield straight from the hand. Repeatedly.

Letting melee be it's own thing maybe. Wave dashing is too hard in melee for casuals, and it's fine that it stays there OK. The explain why every popular plateform fighter has a built in wave dash, that is actualy considered an imput and so is easier to do since the devs balance it. Like letting people do a perfectly flat wave dash sithout requiring perfect angles and such. The skill cap being how well do you precisely move at the right distance rather than being able to do max distance in the first place. I also feel like that wave landing and edge slip is what made plateform better in smash melee. Maye that could only happen on plateform and not the actual edge too. Since there is an actualy skill demanding move to instantly grab the ledge anyway. I feel like directional air dodges, while not perfect in ultimate. Could be done better. If it not enouth in smash ultimate.

Spirits where nice as trophies. I would personaly bring back stickers from brawl. Basicly simpler trophies. That can add many character of they can't be in as trophies.

reboot. every chqrqcter has a funny 64 version with striped down, 64ish movesets and absurd combos. An a new bombastict almost too fidel to the origin game. Imagine 64 Dk with ultimate back air and ding dong. versus new DK with an air grab that put in cargo, side B is his roll and you can jump cancel it, trowable barel as his neutral B, transform into bast barel when aproaching the blastzone to recover (potentialy a random variety like the instant ones or explosive ones that oes further but have caviats), and a remade normal moves tat reference other games. basicly you compile the best part of every appearance in a 64 verssion and make it stuid. and make a proper move set for old characters. Good old bottom tier ganon that everyone loves. versus new ganon with a trident spells and lunges. and new ganondorf, with a sword, reflect, a float and a strong but expoitable projectile. imagine sending the ocarina of time ping pong ball, can be reflected with anymoves and get faster and stronger every time. but if ganon refect it with his actual reflector its unreflectable, unblocable and use all the build up eergy from ping ponging it. so much stuff to do. idd see it like a melee remake. where we just accept that there are 5 marios with differnt movesets from different games. and every new commer is either hype because previous smash games didnt did it justice. r hype becuse we could see what that new commer could have looked like in 64 plus a proper new moveset. see waluigi with a wierd burry down B, a dice trow netral B, and a wario like up B, but string combo like there is no tomorow if he is lucky with his dice trows. and then a new waluigi with rference to mario kart, mario golf, mario strikers, etc etc.

Ahem. Lions have PP as well. It's called stamina and lions historically don't have a ton of it. To factor in the whole 1 billion lions, you'd have to find a way to replenish their bellies and allow them time to rest, seeing as they rest 21 hours a day. For a single lion to make it from the middle of the billion to the front, it would have to fully exhaust itself, lay down and have a bite to eat. Tell me, how many low-end Pokemon do you need to feed 1 billion lions? Also, how many lions can pierce steel? Exactly zero. Steelix alone wins, no gods or dex required.

Thank you for making this video. I’ve held this view for a few years. It makes me shake my head to hear content creators describing themselves as creatives. They have no idea how difficult it is to create something. Yes, talking about the work of others is easy. I love video essays as much as the next guy, but video essayists and the people who watch them often get arrogant and dismissive of the true creatives.

I do agree about some of the Ultra Beasts' design. Gamefreak artists HAD to have consciously hadsome of the NPCs in mind when designing them, the similarities are too eerie. Lillie is Nihilego, Lusamine is Pheromosa, Gladion is Buzzwole, Guzma is Xurkitree, Hala is Guzzlord. I have a feeling in the early deisgn stages they were supposed to be either the Ultra Beasts in human form, or they become the Ultra Beasts.

The presence of buffering and easy short hops alone make ssbu feel better than melee. Could adjustments be made? Absolutely, but as it is, ssbu feels more responsive than its predecessors.

My entirely correct take: 1. Cheating is bad. 2. Cheating requires a victim, co-player or opponent player, a fellow human who is harmed (however trivially). 3. In the absence of a victim, cheating is not cheating, but actually good and based, and every player should go ahead and indulge in as much or little as they find personally satisfying. 4. If you have an opinion about how someone else 'should' play a single player game, you're wrong, you actually don't have an opinion, you're just a babybrained peebaby.

An essay is "just an opinion?" Not quite. Long form content isn't automatically a "video essay." Reviews or react content aren't essays. Opinion pieces aren't essays. Essays are either meant to make an argument and convince someone of your idea, and they require research and a specific thesis/argument/conclusion formula, or they're meant to inform and educate on a topic, and both of these require research. A lot of the examples you give in this video aren't essays. In fact, now that I'm at the end of your video and have warched the whole thing, this just seems like a mostly useless, salty, and cynical take the genre. You wrote a twenty minute rant in three hours and spliced mostly irrelevant game and movie footage over it. Yes, that's "easy" to do. It's also crap. You made a crap video and got me with a clickbait title, congratulations. The fact that it seems to be your best performing video in a while is rather ironically poetic. Maybe you have better videos than this on your channel but this is such a bad first impression I'm not going to bother finding out.

It is funny that the kinds of videos that provide me the most enjoyment aren't video essays and reviews on youtube. Albeit they're interesting to watch sometimes, especially if they pull you into wanting to see how the video gets resolved, but a lot of videos I feel just ramble on about stuff to the point it goes over my head to where I have no idea what they're talking about to really comprehend what I just watched, or they're just incessantly complaining trying to prove why something's bad which makes me feel empty inside. The fact that animated music videos, and parody skits feel more impactful to me is because they're making the most out of every moment. An hour long video essay isn't going to keep me coming back due to it's long duration and slow paced presentation like say a 5 minute video music video will. This is kind of the reason why I rarely re-watch video essays. A lot of the time I can predict what they're going to say, especially when it comes to the typical stuff people always bring up regarding the topic. I'm kind of sick of them. It also doesn't help I'm a scatterbrain of sorts always wanting to hop around youtube to find new channels, so I'll get bored with a lot of these videos midway through and try finding something more entertaining. It's crazy how video essays strive to be the definitive topic on a particular subject, meaning the length of the video needs to cover everything that person wants to talk about leading to these videos to be longer than your average movie just to get all the viewership focused on one video. It would rather get lost on youtube finding several more interesting channels than watching something that long. By the way I haven't even started this video yet, so maybe I do have a short attention span. At least I'm addicted to KZbin instead of TikTok as if that makes anything better. I probably need help.

Towards the end this video reminded me of that part from Bo Burnham's Inside: "Is it necessary that every single person on the planet expresses every single opinion they have on every single thing that occurs all the time? Can anyone, any ~single one~ shut the fuck up? And I know you're thinking 'you're not shutting the fuck up right now' and that's true, but-"

You know, watching this video as someone who does want to do something creative has lead me to the conclusion that your product and what you give back to people should be your primary focus. Games, movies, comics, etx excel in quality when there is something they want to say or provide to make it meaningful. The same should apply to video essays.

Maybe I've just gotten better stuff recommended to me, or I just get bored whenever something is just linearly describing another piece of media but, like, do people actually go and watch video essays recounting what happens in a game instead of playing it so they can talk about it?
