This is a reupload of the original "Cheating in Video Games" video uploaded on August 19th. I've decided to take down the original and reupload to amend some incorrect information as you'll see just over 11 minutes in. I had actually corrected said misinformation in the prior video via a pinned comment and on-screen card but I don't really feel like it was enough. It's very frustrating for me to have to do this because the video was doing quite well and having to reupload it in this manner is almost undoubtedly going to kill any chance it had of succeeding in the algorithm. Such are the consequences of such a mistake, oh well! For this reason, as I say during the disclaimer about 11 minutes in; watch time, retention, comments, likes and general stats etc. are more important to me than ever. There is of course no obligation but if you've already seen this video and decide to give it a watch all the way through again, that'd be hugely helpful to me and I'd be very thankful. Consequently if you missed the video the first time around then hey, here's your perfect chance! Sharing and just generally helping this video would really mean a lot to me, so thank you if you do so. Anyway, the song list in order of appearance is as follows; Tomb of the Ancients - Rayman 2 Bianco Hills - Super Mario Sunshine You're No Help - Silent Partner (the patented Fudj Theme Song, paws off) Kaer Morhen - The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt Jr Street - Mario Hoops: 3 on 3 Mirage Saloon Act 2 - Sonic Mania Fountain of Dreams - Super Smash Bros Melee Violet/Olivine City - Pokemon Gold/Silver/Crystal Evening Lake Home - Spyro 3: Greatest Hits/Spyro: Reignited Trilogy Your Sunset - Tekken Tag Tournament 2 Ocean Palace - Sonic Heroes Spagonia Night - Sonic Unleashed Galoob

Love the video, will give it another run later on just cause! You're inspiring. I love watching content creators develop their writing skills. Here's hoping I take the plunge soon and start writing. It might not pay, but just know I am incredibly impressed with your moral compass. You didn’t have to do a re-upload, but you did. And I think you deserve probs for it. (Not video game related) I cant tell you how many times I seen people make mistakes and just not bother acknowledging the mistake. It infuriates me, especially when it relates to the dreaded word... politics. Anyway thank you for uploading again, just gives us another excuse to rewatch the video in the end, so win-win.

I’m glad this re-upload prompted me to watch this video again, because I got a lot more out of the segment on speedrunning this time around. To be perfectly honest, I almost certainly would’ve watched it again soon, but this was a good excuse to do so now rather than later. Anyway, I liked what you said about bricolage, and making art from unusual things. I’m some 2300 hours deep into Celeste Speedrunning, maybe 5 or 6 hundred of which has been TASing (Tool Assisted Speedrunning). In this game, TASing boils down to writing a text file of inputs and how many frames they’re held, and then using a mod to run the game from those files. The end result is the culmination of the community’s knowledge, dedication, and passion, and the most polished TASes are filled with so much obscure tech. A while back, I remarked to one of the more prominent TASers that the efforts that she spearheaded had created something gorgeous, and I went as far to call it a work of art. All this is to say that I really resonated with the connections you made in this video-regarding cheating, video games as a medium, and art. Thanks for taking the time to talk about this, and I hope that the re-upload doesn’t hurt the video performance too badly

Interesting topic. So, I believe the general message of this video was that cheating is fine -outside of competitive play, where it creates unfair situations- as it increases the lifetime of a videogame and can even create new “modes”, so to call them, like speedruns. Now, imagine a football match between kids where one of them decides to sneak a second ball and the others laugh but decide to play with both because they are just having fun. In fact, they have so much fun that they decide to always start playing with two balls. On a more serious level, the strategies would start to change because of this, as defenders would be more important, forwards would be more necessary, goalkeepers would have to be extra attentive - sorry if any of this doesn’t make sense, I don’t speak Football. Anyway, with all of these changes made to the formation and the game itself, would that be an example of cheating creating a new variety of a game that is not a videogame? I am sure there are also many other sports that were originally created as variations of other already-existing ones. Note: I know that this sport concept would probably have no success because of how dominant regular football is and because having two balls would split the audience’s attention and make them confused/lose interest, I am only using it as an example.
@benedict69624 жыл бұрын
Cheating as a definition would include other games under the term as well. Building on what I said in the downed video, many tabletop games ARE transformed into more balanced, interesting, or accessible products by modifying or even fudging rules entirely. Since more focus is put on telling a story, the need to conform to the rules of the system are only as necessary as the storyteller needs them to be. Not as an exception, but as a norm.

great video and very thought provoking in my opinion, what counts as "cheating" in a game is when you do it and try not to get caught, while that is very unspecific and may not apply too all cases that are generally considered cheating, i think it's a not-terrible rule of thumb

It seems a little unnecessary to toss out all of those views and likes for such a relatively minor slip up. I see people who make videos like this make errors of that size all the time, but it's usually fine because people usually get the gist of what they're talking about. A pinned comment would've easily informed people going down to the comments to correct your mistake of what you actually meant. Edit: 100% agree with you on TF2 being the best designed FPS game ever. That game is honestly on a whole other level, and I wish more people would experience it.

I can think of an example of how cheating in non videogames has had a positive effect on complexity. Core A gaming, a channel on fighting game theory, made a video on movement in fighting games, highlighting korean backdash, an exploit. They also bring up the example of basketball and the introduction of dribbling, which was the exploit of passing the ball to yourself as you changed positions. Like other exploits or cheats, it faced controversy and had limitations created, along with being nearly banned. Whether a dribblingless basketball would be more or less complex than the modern day sport is hard to tell, but it's easy to see that current fans are happy with the adoption of the exploit.

This comment is going to be posted a fair bit after this video has been uploaded, but I think one example you have missed is, well, the creation of different sports. Rugby, the sport, was famously created by an act of Cheating. Where a bloke got mad at Football and picked it up in his hands and started running. From this one of the world's largest sports was created with multiple different variations and so on. That being said, I still think that is merit to the idea of Video Games being able to take Cheating further then ever before, but I think drawing a strict line here is incorrect. Unless I've misunderstood your point of course :) Great video!

most video games are either too hard or too easy. I personally like games that are too easy because I get a break from doing hard things like chores and schoolwork. I also like easy games because if I cant see the character very well (either because of my visual impairment or because of the poor contrast that the game might have) it doesn't make me feel bad over something I cant control. So it would be better if game developers put custom difficulty options so people like me can relieve some stress after a hard day. I understand that some games are specifically designed to be hard, BUT if you look at it from a money standpoint, developers will probably get way more money if they add one more menu. I know that its not as easy as it seems, but it would most likely heavily benefit the company. please correct me if I'm wrong, just please don't be rude about it.

It might happen accidently a few times a week before I either get around to watching the vid or clear my backlog to return to (possibly once time runs out and I can catch up on all the stuff I couldn't fit in). In whichany case, - have a comment! Fwiw I'm also letting the video play to the end which I would have stopped by now due to limited attention span but the music was pretty dope so I left it running. Also just checking; it's not cheating if we inflate the telemetry data is it..? Like we're just getting it back to the way we know it rightfully deserves to be right? Besides, algorhythy might even change the rules of the game again (also not cheating?) so might as well get in on the current meta. **back to staring at where my watch used to be**

And for lag-switches in things like smash, I think people should just legally get or pirate melee. (it is absurdly overpriced at $100 and people who aren’t willing to pay that I feel are justified as piracy is a service problem,and it’s no longer in production so it’s not even stealing from Nintendo.) Ya I am a bit heated by those disgusting cheaters in smash and paladins but my point still stands.

"Cheating" in video games most likely doesn't often correlate directly to "cheating" in real life because, more often than not, "cheating" in video games often has its roots in exploiting pieces of a respective game in order to solve a specific problem which doesn't necessarily result in any real-world gain. It hasn't been until recently that, for instance, "cheating" in video games had gained any sort of intense notoriety or mystery behind the act itself; and all of this is mostly wrapped up in the world of speedrunning (which has, within the past half-decade or so, somewhat quietly become a viable means of making a living for a few individuals and groups). Until the stories covering the intrigue behind a selection of clever (or sometimes not-so-clever) ruses tailored exclusively to gain clout within a speedrunning community, it felt like "cheating" in video games was either an outright black-white call (such as aim-botting in an FPS) or an irrelevant argument of semantics which most speedrunners had already concluded before 2010 (i.e. "This run is 'illegal' because it uses glitches"). Basically, before video games had any social power (or, at least, said social power was beyond the grasp of random individuals who are now lofted into the heavens on the wings of an algorithm), there was nothing to gain from cheating in video games outside of street cred on the playground or on tiny image boards in the wild west of the mid-2000s internet: it was a hobby; and, for true enthusiasts, "cheating" in video games is often as much an aspect of playing them as artificially "damaging/aging/weathering" and modifying figure kits is for model builders.

I'm personally curious as to the "morals" to cheating in pokemon to use in tournaments. (With the caveat that they are possible to obtain in game with the moves/nature/EVs/IVs etc). It's definitely hard cheating, but does it fall more in the the melee training mod pack side or the aimbot side of that definition. Because you are skipping what is assumed to be part of the process and you do get an advantage over people that aren't cheating in the sense that you have more time to test out new strategies without raising a new Salamence every time. For some Legendary pokemon you would have to start over with a brand new save in order to catch a new one. But it also doesn't directly affect the tournament, your pokemon can't doing anything that your opponents can't and that time investment is a barrier to some people's ability to even play the game at a competitive level. So should we let people get a time advantage because the grind can be bullshit or is that time advantage so strong the it puts a significant weight on the scales of competitive play?

@medea272 жыл бұрын
For me, the key to defining 'cheating' is intent... there are too many different activities that get arbitrarily bundled into this category. True cheating is when you use hacks/ glitches/ exploits to 'cheat' other players out of a fair game... using tools to get an unfair advantage over your (human) competitors & remove the element of skill. I don't see any problem with modding or taking advantage of glitches in the code, provided it's single player or you're competing with others using the same parameters so it's an agreed level playing field (like speedrunning). But using glitches or hacks in a multiplayer game to give yourself an edge over other players is 100% cheating. Walkthroughs & tips aren't 'cheats' either. I doubt any game dev (even Nintendo devs!) wants to pour their heart & soul into a game that 95% of players give up on in frustration before they're halfway through. Devs for the first FPS & RPG games like Doom & Space Quest understood that players would get stuck, so publishers like Sierra released official guide books to their RPGs and both official & unofficial hints & tips would get published in magazines. Even now, using a walkthrough only has an impact on your personal enjoyment of the game.... getting help to get past a tricky puzzle or level isn't cheating.
@Furore23237 ай бұрын
My entirely correct take: 1. Cheating is bad. 2. Cheating requires a victim, co-player or opponent player, a fellow human who is harmed (however trivially). 3. In the absence of a victim, cheating is not cheating, but actually good and based, and every player should go ahead and indulge in as much or little as they find personally satisfying. 4. If you have an opinion about how someone else 'should' play a single player game, you're wrong, you actually don't have an opinion, you're just a babybrained peebaby.

i think you mistook the word "cheating" with "exploit" many times in this video cheating in the way you meant for sports / irl games still exists in video games. Cheating in a competitive context is never seen as something good or as a bricolage, people can get mad when someone cheats in a speedrun by hacking a game and pretending to have a world record. Same for esports. While exploiting is trying to play within the rules (the "code") by exploiting the game's rules to the maximum. This sentence sounds really dumb but i hope it was still understandable, nice video tho
