Today 14 British Wounded Soldiers arrived at DFW Airport in Dallas Texas to spend 17 days in the United States. Operation Comfort will host them from the Alamo to LBJ Ranch, San Francisco, Yosemite including biking, surfing and BBQ's. On hand greeting them today were American Legion Post 453 from Dallas Love Field, American Legion Post 81 from Duncanville, Southern Cruisers from Denton County, Vietnam Veterans of America from Grand Praire and Patriot Guard Riders

We Aussies, along with our friends, the Americans, Canadians, British, Irish, & Kiwis have fought and died together for the last 100 years, in all major military actions. I cant think of another group of countries that have such a bond, and friendship.

To the thousands of British solders, sailors, and airmen who left home and hearth to defend MY country after the horrific events of 9/11/01 thank you. To the families of the 453 British solders who made the ultimate sacrifice Thank You will never be enough. This yank will ALWAYS be grateful, and remember for as far as I'm concerned they died for me and me family. +30secondstomarsMBH Good luck to you my friend. I hope you enjoy your trip! :) And if you really enjoy history then please make sure to visit Williamsburg, Virginia and St. Augustine, Florida (St. Augustine is the oldest established town in the US and Britain also a big part in colonizing Florida). And I would also check out Ocracoke island, North Carolina and see where Blackbeard met his fate at (you might also be surprised to hear the accent of the natives there). And definitely don't miss out on West Virginia (or the Appalachian mountains in general) during autumn (or year round). The mountains are gorgeous during autumn with the land in full harvest! And hit the bourbon trail in Kentucky and try all the bourbon you can. I can go on and on, but enjoy yourself and stay safe! :)

mraaronhd Thanks!!! Alas, it's a 6 day packed out trip with my university, so the timetable's already set in stone, but one day, if I travel to the US for a holiday, or if I'm lucky enough to be able to live, I'll visit these places, I'll take a rain-check on the bourbon though, not a fan of alcohol!! Appalachian mountains ARE already on my list of places to go, as is Kentucky, Texas, Alabama (being a black male, the Civil Rights movement is something very interesting to me) Atlanta, Chicago, Detroit. I could go on too!!! I'm going to see my grandma and my aunty as well, Grandma's from Jamaica and Aunty's a British American, they left Birmingham (UK) to move out to New York years before I was born, so I've visited there a few times, and I'm gonna pop round for a visit. So I'm very much used to you guys!!! One thing that's surprising me though is tipping, in the UK, whilst we do tip, I've only just realised how much you guys tip. Not in cost of course, I'm not a selfish person or anything, but as a student I'm worried a bit about how much tips are going to cost. Do you think you could help me work on my budget if possible? It'd be great to get some help from an American on costs in the US. Thanks very much again for the info!!!!. :) Much love :)

the independence of the USA helped divide power. since then, though the domestic policies and partisan divides differ, we have always remained as one. In my eyes, a testimony in the power of limiting power and creating room for liberty. If only more could see this in the US and start limiting the powers of the feds and let the people of each state live as they please, we could reignite this brotherhood.

You people do understand this happens to not just people across the pond, people being born in Latin America yet moving to the states without choice, yet they fight and die for your country, men yes you men and woman who love to think down of those "immigrants" remember your own people aren't from this land, we love and grow up in this country as much as your, our skin ain't your taste or our looks , but even uncle Sam doesn't look at that when calling for war

@@attackonmars5198 Served alongside all religions, nationalities and yes skin colours - only once suffered any such problems considering any of those and it was swiftly dealt with. An Indian lad who just could not and would not work alongside white troops without trying to cause some sort of foment and misery when everyone else was working toward the one goal. He didn't last long and promptly tried to claim he was a victim of race discrimination. He pulled his shit once too often, got a broken nose for it and it was witnessed by a West Indian NCO who decided enough was enough and he wasn't having any more of it. The Indian lad was taken to the MO and not seen again after that. No ideas where they sent him to keep him happy and could not care less as long as it wasn't near me (or obviously the Fijian lad who finally decked him because he'd pushed his bullshit too far) A happy multi ethnic group thereafter it has to be said.

I served as part of a 6 man British team in a US artillery/Ordnance unit in Germany in the early '70's. They were nearly all conscripts in those days and did not take their military duties overly seriously (good enough to do a job if called upon buy you would not wish to expand on that) The pros amongst them were top class people, many had Vietnam service under their belts so knew exactly how seriously wrong things could go in a matter of seconds - they were at the top of their game and a joy to work with. The conscripts were just teenagers with all the usual teenage problems of too much energy, too much time, not enough money and brains still not fully formatted. Fun and trouble in equal amounts but they gave us respect and in turn we gave them our best efforts and taught them how to drink and not get into trouble with the German Police or end up in a German hospital. There was a brigade sized British unit not that far away and interactions were many and usually on friendly terms (all the British were professionals and gave the US lads some leeway so it usually all had a happy ending).

I worked with some Americans and was told that one of the reasons they welcome home their troops so respectfully goes back to the Vietnam War when their returning troops were not always treated well. They were greeted by anti war activists. Nothing wrong with being anti war; we all should be, but these troops had no choice and did their job. Looking back they realized their mistake and have more than made up for it. My dad was a Scot and fought in WWII. He admired the US because at that time they always owned up to their mistakes but like the rest of the world they are all covering up for their mistakes at the expense of true patriots.we owe a lot to all our veterans and serving soldiers.

They deserved better, and so do you.

I had the privilege to live and work in your beautiful country in the mid 1980's for a couple of years a time I will never forget as it was a wonderful time. Thank you again for treating our troops as if they were your own. Respectfully yours Richard :)

I went to Snowmass village in Colorado a few years ago with Blesma (British limbless ex servicemen's association), where we met up with wounded American soldiers from the Wounded Warriors programme and spent two weeks with CAMO,, I was quite at 48 and was one of only two ex British soldiers not to have lost my leg and suffered serious injuries to the remaining leg through enemy action, I lost mine a serious RTA as I was cycling home from teaching recruits, because of this I didn't feel like I should be there, but the Americans soon put that thought out of my head, they didn't care if id lost it in action or an accident or through illness, when they found out I had served 16yrs and done 7 operational tours in Northern Ireland they made me feel very welcome and thanked me for my service, the reaction throughout the entire stay from the Americans was unbelievable, we didn't want for anything. They showed us respect wherever we went, we went to Aspen and the reaction was the same, they made us feel proud to be ex British soldiers, The veteran's in the US ore fiercely proud of there service and rightly so, its something that will stick with me till the day I die, thank you for making our stay fantastic, however they still cannot out drink us Brits, they tried to (every night lol) but failed miserably, like they once said , "you Brits are the 1st into the bar, the last out of the bar but are still up, fed and ready to roll before us in the mornings" , what can I say, work hard and play hard.

I have nothing but respect and admiration for troops of our allies and of ourselves (I'm a Brit). I've never met a Left winger that doesn't feel the same. We only hate war, we'd rather peace and freedom and equality and no-one, soldiers and civilians alike having to die. Don't think that because we fight to end war we hate troops. That's not true and is incredibly hurtful, especially as so many liberals have fought and sacrificed in the military.

We were a stationary target during the Cold War knowing I would die but knew it was an all out effort for all our countries to survive. 1984 thru 1994 were the most exciting yrs of my life. 2011...I was a USMC infantryman in Afghanistan myself at the time and I remember the 4th of July we just wanted to light off fireworks...or you know explosions to celebrate our independence day. Ironically and sadly a British soldier was taken by the Taliban and we opted to go on the hunt for him instead of celebrating on our forward operating base.... Unfortunately he was killed by the Taliban but they certainly paid in blood themselves that day...I'll never forget it but it felt like we made them pay a heavy price. 10 years later I regret nothing. Much love from one American warrior to our British brother's.

***** Yes. The American Civil War was fought when the southern states (Dixie) tried to leave the US and form the Confederate States of America. They called the Northern States the Yanks. The reason for trying to leave the US was because they thought the State Government was paramount to the Federal Government in Washington. This came to a head over the issue of Slavery, which was outlawed in the North but was integral to the economy and social structure that reigned at the time in the south. The south had better soldiers and generals, but the North had endless manpower (with new european immigrants constantly arriving... especially the Irish at that particular time) and equipment. It was only a matter of time before the south lost. In a way, the same fight is being had currently in Europe where EU member states struggling because the don't want someone in brussels making decisions for their country. But unlike 1860, it is unlikely to come to blows.

THANK YOU FOR THIS! What a wonderful Texan welcome for our Brit wounded, y'all! Deeply appreciated by this Scotsman who spent a couple of years on exchange with the 1st Cav Div in Ft Hood and in Iraq on Shield and Storm. Will never forget your friendliness and generosity. Oh and thank you for the many curious looks when I got back to the British Army with a 4x Resistol, two shit kickers a BSM and an MSMas well. Very proud of those!

I've Travelled all over the USA down the years and i absolutely love the Country and the people. I don't ever feel like i' in a foreign country when i'm there. The USA and the UK supported by our Brothers in Australia and Canada we need to have each others backs more so now than ever. I was brought up in a very pro US family. My father telling me stories about the US service men who gave them Candy and fruit during the war yrs. My dad was 10yrs old when the Yanks showed up. He said from that day we knew the war was won. My father talked about visiting America, but never made it. He passed away when i was 15 and i swore i'd see as much of the USA as possible. Texas is on my list next.

About 30 years in my parish church, I meet a very nice older gentleman form Ireland. He said he was at Dunkirk, North Africa and Normandy. A very kind person. He worked for the railroad when he came over he knew cousin. God Bless him and all British Army soldiers. My Dad was stationed with the 5th Infantry Division in England prior to D-Day; fought under Patton for awhile.. He said the British soldiers were excellent soldiers. God Bless you brave young men.

Thank you. I'm American and can assure you those ties will never be broken. I live about 5 blocks from the White House, and perhaps 10 from the British Embassy. There is a famous statue of Churchill giving his V for victory sign, his legs a bit apart. The reason, he has one foot on British soil (the embassy), and the other on American, a symbol of his background (American mother), but a metaphor for our ties. There are almost always flowers placed in front.

To show such respect to heroes from the UK makes me proud to be an American. I have to say though that it must have been pretty overwhelming to be greeted by such a crowd, especially for the soldiers with PTSD
