This is actually one of my biggest fantasies of her career... I would love for her to strengthen her voice with a really good coach, bring out her deeper, more natural contralto voice, and do a "stripped" album a la Kylie Minogue's The Abbey Road Sessions. Yes, this was for Blackout - it was included in the long list of demos that was leaked onto the internet en mass before the album was finalized and mastered. I don't think you guys understand the process - you record many rough demos and then select which ones to advance into the next stage of production, and from there further tracks are eliminated until a final tracklist is selected. This these songs are in such various states of completion - some were never expanded upon after the initial recording, and some still had vocals set down that were meant to be re-recorded or mixed (which you can tell by that whispy choral sound) such as "Kiss You All Over." This was definitely a post-Kevin 'Blackout' recording.

I know I’m 10 years late to this comment, but I just wanted to say when you say “darkest time” you weren’t lying, but it was actually written in 2002 right after her break up with Justin. I remember hearing this song at her Dream Within a Dream concert on June 15, 2002 where she kept repeating the lyrics “Baby Boy”. I was hoping she would release the song, and then I never heard it again, so there was a time where I thought maybe I just kind of imagined it. Well, imagine my surprise when I came across this song today 21 and a half years later! I only heard a snippet of it, but I just knew it was the same song. I googled the song and this video came up. So far, I haven’t read any comments connecting it to Justin, but why would there be? It sounds like the track was officially made for her Blackout album and unreleased until after the album came out. If you listen carefully, it fits with the time period.

I’m 5 years too late to your comment about how “Baby Boy” missed the Blackout album, but let me kindly oblige. I think I might be able to shed some light on the situation. I remember going to Britney’s Dream Within a Dream tour on June 15, 2002 when she was promoting the album “Britney”. She sang all of the songs she was supposed to sing, but in the middle of the set, she sat down and sang a mysterious song where she kept repeating the lyrics “Baby Boy”. I remember the raw emotion and pain in her voice and of course, even almost 17 year-old me could connect the song to Justin as she had just broken up with him in March 2002. I remember wanting her to add the song to an album, but I never heard it again. Imagine my surprise earlier when I heard a snippet of the song on a fan made video. I instantly knew it was the same song. I googled it to hear the song in its entirety, so now 21 and a half years later I get to enjoy this gem again. I’m not really sure why Britney didn’t release the song on her 2003 album as that would have been good timing. However, maybe it was just too raw for her. By the time she released Blackout, she was no longer with Kevin, so maybe she felt free to go back to the song. After all, she was going through heartache again. Who knows about how she was feeling at that point. Maybe she was double mad because it sounds like she was in love with Justin even for a long time after they broke up and she figured that if Justin hadn’t dumped her, she wouldn’t be in the predicament she was currently in (twice divorced and in a huge custody battle at the time). It’s just me speculating, but I thought you might want to know the time period this song made its way to public ears even if it wasn’t released until more than five years later. Now she has two boys and I hope she is finding healing and happiness.
