He also inflamed jazz fans and music critics in the sixties by pointing out some "standards" that he thought were dreck and some Beatles songs that he thought were great.

This legit sounds like 90% of women in coffee shops and on open mic nights. It’s really good, sure, but I’m guessing there’s a Joan Baez clone in every major city doing the exact same thing but they don’t have a KZbin channel. Rearranged pop song? Check. Slowed down? Check. Capo? Check. Only difference is no acoustic guitar and higher production value. Again, I think it’s great and I really like it, but whether we like it or not, there’s a reason the original was a huge hit and a reason this version didn’t go super viral.

This is marvellous. Well sung, smoothly played, great tone, and beautifully captured. Still, I’m a bit puzzled by so many reactions here below saying they hated the original and love this. This is the same song. Same melody, same rhythm, same groove, same lyrics. Different production, different instrumentation, slightly different tempo. But the same song. You may not be into Britney Spears’s voice, image, commercial intention, pop culture, mass market approach etc.. but you can’t deny this was already a great tune before Mary did this beautiful rendition of it. Great job!

I agree that the base material of the song had potential from the very beginning - i listened to it back in the days and in my opinion it was one of the most interesting songs from britney. On the other hand: When you listen to the original and compare it to Mary's version it shows how the original was reduced to the straight, simple, soulless popversion just because it fitted the marketing of Britney at this time and made the dollars come in based on some sales model / analysis of the then current music market.... so sad. Mary fitted in great harmonics and variations - wonderful - but if britney would have tried this with the original it (likely) wouldn't have worked for her ... again ... so sad

It was already a great tune before Brittany gave it a go... "Toxic" is a song by American singer Britney Spears, for her fourth studio album, In the Zone (2003). It was written and produced by Bloodshy & Avant, with additional writing from Cathy Dennis and Henrik Jonback. Released as the second single from In the Zone, the song was initially offered to Kylie Minogue for her album Body Language, but she turned it down. After trying to choose between "(I Got That) Boom Boom" and "Outrageous" to be the second single, Spears selected "Toxic" instead. Mary has soul. She breathes feeling into this that cuts to your core. Something that Brittany struggles to do consistently.
