I honestly don’t know how she’s singing it at that fast tempo yet maintaining the “blues” integrity of the piece- the sadness- of the song- and where we all can still hear the important words just long enough in the lyrics- it’s impressive- I know that can’t be easy to do and she has a velvety low voice- thick as honey- it’s perfect for the song. It’s a great rendition!

This was such a special moment when Leo and Mary did this. I found this video almost immediately after it was posted and I fell in love with this version. It may have been the first time I saw Leo being SERIOUS. Both of these artists have talent to burn. Over the last 5 yrs since it was posted, I may have commented before but tonight I shared it with my wife on our karaoke night, I couldn't keep up with it. My wife and I often listen Leo's covers, and Sultans of Swing with Mary is our favorite. So.... When I stumbled upon this cover, I just played it to my wife without saying who sings it, and asked her can she guess who is it... she couldn't... Then I said it was this guys and played Leo and Mary's cover of Sultan of Swing .... to say that she got bamboozled is understatement :D Leo thank you for all your covers, you are number 1 playlist in my car/house and you often bring joy to my neighbors, and Mary thank you for your angelic voice!

When covering this song, it's not enough to simply sing the words. Tracy Chapman told a story that drew the audience in with the incredible way that she sang it. I've heard covers by singers with lovely voices, but no soul, or emotion. This is not one of those. Thank you for delivering a performance truly faithful to the original. A great voice, capable of bringing life to the story behind the lyrics. Truly amazing.

Spent a week in Istanbul in spring 1989, and this song was on the radio in every single shop in town. This version is just gold.

Absolutely fantastic. Just beautiful. Being a punk rocker/metalhead as a teen, I hated this song when it came out, in the '80s. You tend to carry those musical biases as you make your way through life. As it happened, I didn't like that damned song for decades, continuing my love for punk & metal. However, once you hit your 40's, time starts to catch up with you and those pangs of nostalgia and sentimentality start showing up. They get stronger and stronger as the years pass. Eventually, you start longing for those "old days, when the times were better" and you catch a song, like this one. It takes you back to when you were a teen or in your early 20's and you remember hating that song. Only, there are fond memories that these songs bring up. Perhaps you remember dissing it with some friends you haven't seen in 30 years. Maybe your stupid sister was jamming it as you and your best friend were getting ready to go to a party and you ended up taking to that girl you had that crush on... All of a sudden, that song isn't so bad, now. This cover is so good. I think it's much better than the original. Mary's voice is beautiful. Leo playing mellow, instead of a metal cover was a wonderful change of pace that really added to the cover. Your guitars were mixed so well. If this had been the version that was released back in 1988, I would've loved it, despite the shit I would have gotten from my friends. I would watch the video every time I happened to catch it on MTV. And now, on the verge of leaving my 40's behind, I find that I actually like this song and, with this fantastic cover, I'll have a few more fond memories of it, when my 50's start to come to a close.

I don't know who you are, but your comment just made me a bit misty eyed. I too am getting to that middle age state and was into very different music coming up. What Leo, his wife and friends do is just down right amazing! Songs like this, done in this fashion tug at my heart strings. Brings back memories of my teen years. Driving to shows up to six hours away from home. The friends I've loved and lost along the way. The good and bad times. Thank you Leo for your music message....and thank you whoever I'm replying to for your words. All we have left as we get older are memories and feelings of our lives. For the most of us, it's the music we hear that can trigger those good or bad times in life. Be it good or bad, we need "to keep on rocking in the free world" as long as possible. 🤘❤️

This song hasn't aged a day when played well as it is here (don't get me started on the Luke Combs version). It's right in Ms. Spender's wheelhouse and she absolutely nails it.
