We no longer have "asylums" in the U.S. We do have Psychiatric Hospitals. However, as I understand it a court would have to direct someone to be hospitalized for any type of long-term admission. I think the maximum stay is usually for 90 days, or until the court-ordered problem is resolved or an subsequent court order changes the court order. Not really clear. I live about 30miles away from Los Banos and recall this insane story. She clearly has some mental issues to openly touch alcohol after that being the main cause of her sisters death. Unfortunately CA is too lenient like some others have stated. In DC, there was recently a 16 year old who unloaded a AR-15 down a residential street at a car. They released him to his parents b/c of his lack of criminal history and supportive family. Thankfully, they did an emergency hearing and locked him up since that "supportive family" allowed him to have an AR-15

As a retired Paramedic with almost 30 years experience I am appalled but not surprised they didn’t mention something about jail time for kicking the EMT in the face. In Florida where I worked battery on a Paramedic or EMT or Firefighter is the same as on law enforcement automatic mandatory felony, but she was in the snowflake socialist republic of California
