Very similar to Escrima, but many knife fights/attacks I witnessed (as a correctional officer working Old Folsom in the 80s) were more of an ambush type assault with many short and fast thrust to the body or a few quick slashes to the throat if possible. On the street, I have seen similar methodology used as well, usually all over in seconds. The techniques demonstrated here seem effective as long as one brings a knife capable of getting proper penetration to vital areas.

Roger Harper TBH if you are going to learn how to use a knife, you need to know some essential anatomy and if you can some pathology, you don’t need a six or twelve inch blade, when a three inch blade can do the job, provided you know where the key targets are.

Differences: I was taught to protect my lower body (belly button down) with my off hand (hand not holding the blade). This is instituted to slap or knock away or deflect an attacker's arm, or to parry a punch. My blade protected my upper body. The off hand or 'protector hand and arm,' and the blade wielding hand, are always to work in tandem...one always protecting the other when fighting. All else you teach, 'pyramid sector' and 'points of thrust/slash/stick, stepping forward to attack/stepping back to reassess or rethink when overwhelmed, are clock on similar. One important thing I was taught is never providing or producing the 'negative' position or opportunity, for an attacker to utilize against you. Aggressiveness and intimidation was also a stressed criteria. Even stomping the ground loudly with a foot was taught me; to gain the attacker's attention for a brief, strategical moment. Good video, Instructor. Thank you. I'm going on to your third video.

This training video is a break down of movement in it's infancy stage to help beginners learn how to use. Having a martial arts background will help a lot. The whole 2 hour video will save your life. This is the real deal shit and I have used it to save my life, and I have used it against other knife fighting systems with cold steal training blades. This is by far the most practical and straight forward tactical knife fighting system. I'm not even a pro at this style but it makes u efficient. I'm willing to spare with anyone local with training blades to test the difference. Always seeking to advance or see what methods are best for use. So far this one is real world applicable...

It finally dawned on me why this technique seemed so familiar. It is either based on or has incorporated many similar movements as two systems that have been around for hundreds of years. Bowie big knife fighting and the system it was based on was FENCING. You can't get any better time-tested system than fencing. Fighting with big knives is just fighting with short swords. If the footwork in fencing wasn't the best then it would have changed over hundreds of years of competition. One difference I did notice was his hand was placed high to protect his neck. In Bowie knife fighting, they seem to have the hand a bit lower to protect the heart from a thrust. That places the arm/hand more out of the way to see better and to use it in countering. It is only a few inches lower than the neck and can easily and rapidly be moved to protect the neck if you see a high attack coming. Remember, you can bob and weave as in boxing, too. You don't have to stand like a statue with movable arms. Moving your head and shoulders will also make it harder to hit your neck. But, your heart doesn't move as far as your head so you still need more protection to avoid a thrust to the chest/heart so keep your hand in front of your chest. Just my opinion.

Meck1786, I see your point, and I was just about to comment about the left (rear) hand positioned in front of the throat, yes, but, like you, I'd want the outer hand and outer forearm facing the opponent, to avoid the danger of exposing the wrist and inner arm, which is how I was always taught to parry blades, if at all possible. That springing back foot does work, though, IMHO. I still appreciate that these insights are being shared.

Every knife fight art (unarmored) from the Philippines share the same basic stance (more or less) and logic. Seeing the prevalence to this day of actual knife fighting in the country, I'd go with what he said. Only thing I'm weary of is the backhand stab which is ideally executed against an opponent cutting the angle at the same time that the critical distance is being re-established. A backhand from 12 o'clock has a risk of being jammed and you can take a 3" poke easily in the time to disengage. Of all the risks when knife fighting, you WILL be cut and stabbed, the depth in which you open yourself to be stabbed is critical (every attack and defence moves the protecting limbs away from the vital area). 20 puncture wounds will get trumped by anything deeper than 2-3inches in the torso.

All martial arts practiced today have their history in other martial arts, no exceptions. Krav Maga simply combines what is often considered the most effective techniques that are easy to learn (effectiveness vs. learning curve) and teaches you how to use it. Where the kick or punch or what ever comes from makes no difference. Escrima was influenced by the Indonesian arts, who were influenced by the Chinese arts, who in turn got their inspiration from the Indian arts predating Kalaripayattu.

Alright, so I have a question. I am currently boxing and have very well conditioned my left hand, or my non-dominant hand, to be in front. It works very comfortably and if I switch to have my right hand it front, it just feels awkward. The instructor said to have the knife in your dominant hand and your dominant hand in front. Would it be okay for me to have my left hand at the front, since I am most used to it, or should I practice and condition my right hand to be more used to moving like that.
@Britsamurai8 жыл бұрын
+a199719971997 I train and do the drills with both sides, right and left hand dominant. I don't do the drills with my knife hand in the back, but I still train using my dominant hand to control the opponent, while I attack with the knife from the rear. I would use this technique for an unarmed threat, especially a large threat and one possibly trained in knife disarmament techniques.

@thranduilmirkwood65189 жыл бұрын
If he is right handed, it's better to have the right side forward in order to be at reach of his opponent and also to be in a correct stance, more stable when you attack. If you attack with you're right hand and the left leg is forward, that's not that good.
@michaelbexarthomas6529 жыл бұрын
Honestly the knife hand should be in front and if you naturally box in an orthodox stance (left foot forward) and are used to that than using your left hand (jabbing hand) to hold the knife is best. The rear hand can be used for powerful follow-up strikes if needed or to help feel whats in back of you before you run into it (your back foot does the same). You will always move better in a stance your used to. Knives don't take much energy to be effective when kept sharp. Three months later but a non-chimpanzee answer.
@joshm34849 жыл бұрын
Thranduil Mirkwood Oh never saw the reply. Any ways there seem to be allegations that other than 3 years with a demolition unit in the 80s the guy has no military experience or affiliation, but that's true of 95% of the people who sell self defense and try to make it sound like they're some sort of elite operator. He also claimed to train with and be endorsed by people who have flat out stated he's being dishonest with the nature of their relationships. He might be the greatest warrior in the world, though you can actually look at the official manuals used to train most military and see that his system is...unique, but good or bad, in the "street self defense super SEAL mall-ninja" business you're only as good as you word, and most of it's bullshido.

@Britsamurai8 жыл бұрын
+Nico Kulmann Israeli forces, more often than not deal with lightly trained militia's and civilians, Navy Seals go up against fully trained armies, so they need to be more prepared for disarms and counter attacks,. Having the knife out front does makes it more vulnerable to trap techniques, but it is definitely an advantage in a knife fight with someone who is not highly trained.

There is the argument that an opponent could steal your knife because it is closer to him.
