My little one is 20 mos and is just starting the “no” phase, so I’m not an expert by any means, but I find it really helpful to do three things. 1. Giving her the plan. I will say “Okay, let’s build one more tower to knock down, then we will put our shoes on and then we will get in the car.” Then “okay, time to put our shoes on then get in the car.” Idk, she does really well when I remember to do that. 2. Don’t ask when I should be telling. Kindly saying “We are going to leave now.” Instead of “Do you want to go to leave now?” And 3. Giving her two choices that I would be okay with either. “Would you like to play with blocks or baby dolls?” Usually she answers with one of the choices. Anyway, no expert here but I hope this maybe helps. You’re an awesome mom! Thanks for inspiring me along this journey!

My girl is 22 months and I agree! Giving the plan and giving options that will help her do what needs to be done. "I will swing for 10 more times and then we will pack our bags and go home." Count till 10 then gently say, "ok, now we are going to pack out bags." "Would you like to go into the stroller or walk alongside me?" I think transitions are so hard for them but as long as we keep being consistent, they will find it easier to cooperate 😊

Hi, another unsolicited tip: When we take something from our 19mo old daughter, we say “I’m going to take ___ in 3, 2, 1” and then take it, so we don’t rip it away from her as we wouldn’t like that ourselves! If it is something that is dangerous, we’ll grab it immediately. But other than that, we count down. She usually gives it up before 1 and without a big feeling! My son (two next month) was the same with words. He wouldn’t say them unless he was confident he could do it right. I caught him one night on his monitor practicing his words to himself 🥹 We went from 20ish words to over 50 in a couple weeks.

I worked in childcare and my specialty was toddlers. When I was working with toddlers and in situations where we could give them choices I would word it in a way where I would give the child a choice by two options rather then giving them a yes or no questions. I would say either “would you like me to put on your shoes, or would you like to put on your shoes?” Or “are you gonna put on the left shoe first or the right shoe first?” It would just reroute their mind to the activity they are doing rather then going straight to saying “no.” But they are also toddlers and they are learning to make their own choices and they will bound to challenge your patience. You are amazing, I love the mindset you have with parenting and I love your videos. Thanks for being you

i'm such a fan of your! my son is almost 1 year old and I have been struggling with sleep/sleep training. Up to this day he wouldn't sleep more than 2 hours straight and this was draining me. Feeding is also not easy all the time, sometimes he would refuse eating or he wouldn't want to sit on his high chair. I have never thought motherhood can be this hard. We always wanted to have two kids but having this one child we clearly see that parenting is just not for us, it doesn't fit us we don't fit iy. I can't imagine how single moms are managing it. I enjoy following along with your videos. My daughter turns two this week and I think because they are close in age, your videos have helped me along the way! I don't think I have ever commented on a KZbin video but thought I would provide what I've learned to help answer your question (hope this helps). With toddlers and young children, asking lots of questions can often overwhelm them. These days when we're getting ready for a transition in our day, I try to tell her the plan and make statements about what is coming next rather than ask her (example: "it's time to put our shoes on to go out for a walk. First shoes, then walk" instead of "Do you want to go for a walk? Can you put on your shoes? ). These statements are definitely not the typical way we would talk to our partners or friends so I found it really unnatural at first, but now I'm noticing it helps move things along with fewer big feeling eruptions (they still happen) and I think it puts her at ease to know the plan and that I've got it sorted. I've noticed at some of our toddler classes that this is the way the teachers speak to the young kids as well, it's effective. I have read in a childhood development book that toddlers and young children need their parents to take the lead because their little brains have so much learning to do that it actually calms them when an adult takes the lead and provides gentle guidance. I would compare it to how we would feel if we were in an emergency and had a firefighter come up and start asking us questions instead of providing us clear directions on how to escape. Although it seems nice to investigate and ask them lots of questions about what they want instead (like in your soother gentle parenting example in this video - totally been there and done the same thing) I think it can be overwhelming for a little person to hear so many asks. And at two years old, the answer is almost always ....."NO!!!!!" (even if it's something you know they would probably enjoy once you started doing it). Anyway, each day comes with new challenges over here too, you're not alone in that. Hope this helps a little! It's a fun but exhausting stage of parenthood!

I love watching your journey with Arrow. My son is just a two months younger and girl… I get you. The no’s never end. I tend to respond to him with yes with the same fervor but that sometimes upsets him more. I do gentle parenting but when his safety is concerned… “like grabbing a knife,” I tend to say NO with more authority and urgency so he knows I mean business. Then I will explain to him why he cannot have the knife. Then I will comfort him for being sad and offer two other things he can do instead. But toddlerhood is a challenge. Big feelings… are challenging but also so amazing as well. They are really growing up. It’s so great to see.

My step son (now 6) didn’t start speaking at all until he was 3-4 (not even basic words like no) and he’s currently in speech therapy when he’s in school. My daughter (turning two in just a couple weeks) has a wide range of vocabulary and every child is different and processes life differently. I would not worry too much about her speech yet. With day care/preschool, it’s a fantastic tool for helping develop language and vocabulary because she’s hearing all the other kids talk and she wants to communicate with them too. We didn’t do preschool until 3.5 almost 4 years old with my step son and he’s still doing great in school now. It is fascinating how 2 toddler girls (only about a month and a half apart) are so different with their play time. My daughter loves stacking toys/building things and chores around the house. She loves to help vacuum and mop (think swiffer wet mop pads). She loves to help with dishes and cleaning up the house. Any kind of toy or game that requires thinking, she loves it. She also will get books and ask to read books multiple times a day as part of her play time. I could never use reading as a bed time routine even when she was little because she wouldn’t get drowsy. She always got excited when I would read. Keep going one day at a time, Momma. You’re doing great and she is obviously well adjusted and handling her “big feelings” really well. You’re doing amazing and the coparenting you’ve got is obviously working and going well. So happy for you and your family. Hugs and love (and a whole lot of appreciation) from the Midwest. ♥️

Loved this video, especially since my daughter is only a few months behind Arrow. Our “big girl bed” transition went like this for our older daughter though…our crib was able to become a full size bed frame, but we started with the full mattress on the floor for a few months to see how she slept on it. This way it’s still not that far from the floor just in case ☺️ and now she should be set through high school. Potty training is tough and I would invest in a good mattress cover or be comfortable with doing pull-ups at night only. We did pull-ups at night for 6ish months with my first and there is no shame in it. Love y’all and have a good week!! 💖

The mindset you have with “big feelings” is huge especially at the age your daughter is at. Children are just learning feelings and they also do not understand why they feel that way. They are just as confused as you are about why they are feeling that way. As long as you aren’t giving into those “big feelings” (example, by giving Arrow the pacifier) you are not enabling that behaviour you are just supporting your daughter. Ugh you are such an amazing influence!!! You make me so excited to be a mom

We just got my daughter a floor house bed in full size and we love it ! I hung little twinkle lights from the middle And tulle around the frame. We kept our bed time routine exactly the same and the transition went good.

I’m actually loving the toddler stage. We’re finding choices work really well (time for a nappy change, do you want to walk up or be carried? etc). We also use distraction which really minimises full on tantrums (you can’t climb the TV stand as it’s dangerous, let’s get your climbing frame out instead) 💖

Explanining what will happen before it happens, then asking her what choices she has that way she feels she has control of choosing what she what’s to do. Always always explain to your child what will happen next, that makes them feel ready and comfortable to what will happen. It always makes my little girl feel comfortable and not scared. Offering a hug when they have uncontrollable Tantrum calms them down at that age. At the end they are kids and they don’t know how to control there emotions. As adults we sometimes don’t know how to control our emotions either lol. When a mom tries to do there best for their children and gives them love!I think that is makes us great mothers even though we feel like we aren’t 💗

Floor bed all the way!! I got it from Cocovillage at 15 months (she is currently 21 months) and she loves it. The transition was smooth and she can get in and out by herself and walk on the bed safely, I did got her a “bumper” to put on the side because she moves a lot and one time she rolled out of bed and got scared obviously!

I have a 21 month old and up until recently every fruit was called “mimis” he recently just started naming each one and my favourite is “banas” 😂 as long as they can communicate to you and you understand I don’t think at this age it matters too much. Signing has also been great for us, he speaks very well for his age but still signs a lot of words as he’s saying them. Hopefully he continues and can possibly help children at nursery who maybe can’t communicate verbally. Keep going mama 🖤

I love that I found your channel right before my daughter was born. I love watching and it definitely gives me pointers to keep in mind. My daughter is going to be 2 in December and our new addition will be here in November a week before her 2nd birthday. It's scary and overwhelming when I think about how I'm going to take care of 2 munchkins, mostly on my own. Their father and I currently don't live together temporarily. I always love hearing how Arrow is doing. On the note of bed size, my policy has always been to get the bigger size. My daughter goes through stages where she needs/wants cuddles (when she had Covid and croup I slept in her bed for 9 nights), and I'm always grateful that we put her on a Queen. Our potty training approach with a nice bed that we hope lasts is just double-making the bed. Layer 1, waterproof sheet, fitted sheet; layer 2, waterproof sheet, fitted sheet. If she has an accident, we pull a layer, change her clothes, and get her back to sleep as seamlessly as possible. Her mattress is on a bunkie board on the floor until I'm comfortable raising it higher, and you can always add foam bumpers if you find that Arrow needs railings.

I have some advice about the “no” and tantrums about taking an object away! ♥️♥️♥️ For the no, try offering her a choice between 2 things/activities instead of asking her a yes or no question. And the tantrums from taking an object away will last shorter if you immediately divert her attention to something else and start talking about the new thing in detail. Ex: “we can’t play with the knife because it’s dangerous, but here I have 2 spoons we CAN play with! This one is orange and this one is purple! Which one is your favourite?” Lol 😆♥️

Definitley get a double/full. It will come in useful if she needs you in the middle of the night (things tend to go up and down with young kids at night). Very easy to snuggle them back to sleep in a larger bed. We did a double mattress directly on the floor with a low profile bed that basically wraps around the mattress and has book shelves as the headboard and along the side. Helping kids learn to talk - we found asking open ended questions and allowing all the time our little one needed to respond helped a lot - sometimes that means biting our tongue and not saying anything for what feels like an eternity while she collects her thoughts and puts together a sentence. We also talk to our LO using the same words and language as we would an adult (minus swearing) instead of using “baby talk” or only simple words or made up words. We also refrain from using stacked questions (asking multiple questions in a row at a time).

I think with mobility and words daycare helps because kids copy other kids, my daughter started walking independently 10 months and now she just turned 2 few days ago talking non stop very clearly she would tell stories and sing long songs count till 20 .. etc but I do think daycare plays a big role in that I’m not gonna lie! Also my husband and I try our best to talk with her all the time but we never ever pressure her with anything Every kid is on their own pace !

You can get side rails that hook onto the side of your bedframe as long as the frame is accessible (some beds with drawers or wood accent pieces aren't compatible). Great video as always! My little guy is turning two next week 😢 it goes so fast.

I've noticed with my little girl that I've said no more than yes and it shows. What I've done to remedy her emphasis on no is to really put emphasis on yes. When it is something good that she likes and you ask her if she's hungry (at her normal mealtime) really nod your head and say YYEEESS a few times. This is just what I've done and it is just one example. See if it helps you :)

I didn't speak until I was 4 or something - although I was a horrid brat. Speech therapist confirmed this too lmao. My child who is about to turn two is the total opposite. She's speaking in full sentences NONSTOP and words I didn't even know she knew. Totally from her father! It will all come in time. Toddlers know a lot more than they let on. I also didn't potty train until I was 3 or 4 and my child is already doing it and almost fully trained. Wild tbh how different from me she is in terms of development.

My baby is 1y5months and we transitioned recently to the kura ikea bed, we just put the mattress directly on the floor so she has a small railing, not to fall out while sleeping, but she can step out of the bed awake, and she loves it. We also like it that we won't need to change it anytime soon, since it's a full size :) it's also reversible in case she will want to change it up someday in the distant future.

As far as the bed, if she rolls a lot I suggest the Full with a guard rail to be safe. My 20 month old son rolls all over and is still cosleeping in our King size bed. He has still found a way to fall once. Thankfully it’s a platform bed so it’s not high up, he just got a shock in the middle of the night.

Your doctor may be talking about your state early intervention services. Early intervention services are free nationwide for 0-3 year olds if they qualify (if they have enough of a delay). This is for OT, PT, and speech. Any parent with concerns about their child’s development can self refer to be evaluated (although this doesn’t mean a child will definitely qualify). Waldorf school is the absolute best!! I was in Waldorf from kindergarden to 8th grade and my mom is a Waldorf teacher. It was an absolutely amazing experience, I loved school and my class became my second family 🥹 20/10 recommended

Target has the attachable railing you can add to any bed for $20 and you could save and get a normal sized bed. Also they have platform beds that aren’t too high off floor but after sometime with a no spring or risers can be converted to a normal bed

My four year old has a twin bed from IKEA. We put some lights around the headboard to jazz it up. I feel like twin leaves room for a desk, dresser, and some of her American Girl stuff is sorta big. She has a play room but the smaller bed allows for toys in her bedroom too.

Brittany you can use pool noodles under the bed sheets if you want to get rid of the railing for the twin/full bed I use pool noodles right now for his toddler bed. He has only one rail but the pool noodle seems to keep him in too. He fell out one night when we were first transitioning and ever since we did the pool noodle under the sheet he hasn't fallen out. (My son just turned 2 as well July 8th)

Transitioning my son to his big boy bed was actually very easy and there wasn't much fuss or tantrums (we did this at 20 mths). I did prep him for the big change, by telling him that he was getting a big boy bed and to say bye bye to the crib (crib went to his baby brother). I didn't involve him in the purchase of the bed, but you could do that with Arrow. Also you can buy bed rails to attach to the bed, so you can remove it later).

We didn't buy a transitioning bed, we got a bunk with floor bed (Ikea, later you can put the bed up and play under it), but we haven't transition from the crib because our daughter still wants to get out, doesn't like to go to sleep yet, you can adapt a protective barrier if you want to. Internet is full of house tree like bunks that can adapt from early stages to when the grow a little more ❤️🥰

I’ve potty trained 3 babes as a nanny. Dont rush it. It’s not worth it lol I have been putting a potty out and just letting my son familiarize himself with it. He the same age as arrow. He watches us go and lately he’s been so interested in going before a bath. So we put him on and today and he finally went! I pushed it as a Nanny with the 3 day method and it was just a lot. Also you can look into Reggio Emilia it’s similar to Montessori and Waldorf. And I also gentle parent check out RIE approach and “no bad kids” book so good!

A lot of daycares offer a learning curriculum for as early as one year. Many daycares offer a hybrid learning program (which I think is more realistic than strictly Montessori or Waldorff).

Give her options instead of yes or no questions! “Do you want me to change your diaper in the living room or your bed room?” “Do you want to wear your blue shoes or pink shoes outside” gives her control in the situation with out whether or not you are doing what needs to he done

My son is 18 mo and he sleeps in a full size bed. He’s also almost 3ft tall and the would wake up too often in his toddler bed . Like he didn’t have enough space lol but he’s doing great in a full size bed so I’m happy we got lucky with that.

We did a twin bed at 19 months. The ikea kura bed and left the mattress on the floor so she’s still somewhat enclosed. It has worked out fabulously and she stays in bed for her 11-12 hour sleep window even if she wakes at night.

Also later on when she’s ready we can move the mattress to the proper spot. Eventually when she’s ready again it turns into a loft bed with a play space underneath

My daughter is a few days older than Arrow and we do Guidepost Montessori (they have them in a lot of places). It’s age 18 months-36months for toddlers and then 3-6 for their childrens house. They got to make their own jam from scratch and after their month on ocean life they got to touch a real octopus (it was dead). My daughters speech improved 100% after starting school and being around other kids. I would definitely recommend it, and we do a half day so she gets to eat lunch there and then come home for her nap. But the waitlist is horrendous like you said.

I would go with a full size with waterproof mattress cover. I have a six year old who is much taller than most kids his age so it just made the most sense when going from crib to the big boy bed.

Hey babes I haven’t looked through the comments yet but with the no thing my son has been doing this a lot to but I try to give more options for them to choose from so there can’t be a no and it’s worked so well. Hope this helps I think this video is such a great idea because I’ve needed more toddler how tos and what to expect than I did as a newborn 😂

The “no” phase is real for sure. What is helpful is to ask this or that questions when you can. But it is totally normal. You got this.

Potty training in a toddler bed (same size as the crib) is way easier than a bigger bed. Think of all the laundry when you do the nighttime potty training... We switched her to a bigger bed when she woke up dry on a consistent basis. She was 3ft tall at age 2, so she is a tall girl, but the bed size didn't seem to bother her. It was a huge reward when we finally got her a twin though! She was so excited!

Here in PEI Canada it's common for women to get added to the childcare registry (waitlist) when they're pregnant and not get a spot until their child is 3-4 years old. I think the preschool teaching careers are lessening because it's such hard work with very little compensation. 😔

My baby is 16 months and is in the no phase. We don’t give him an option for these activities, I let him know “hey bud i am going to change your diaper” “I am going to put your shoes on, can you sit please?” “We are going to go home in 5 minutes let’s set a timer” (when we are leaving anywhere) It’s a work in progress because they are little and pushing boundaries is developmentally important. I think the most important things I’ve implemented is to have plenty of time to leave the house- this takes planning ahead on my part! And regulating my emotions, kids are kids and they aren’t trying to “make us mad”. I’m trying to be the adult and stay calm ❤️ It’s hard stuff because I’m a firecracker 😂 but I see the value in his reactions towards me, he is calm and when he isn’t he is quickly calmed🌸
