Thank you for this! I've wasted so much money following other KZbinrs. Every child and family is different. Praying we all realize whats best for our families and trust the Lord with the fruits of our labor.

Figuring out your own style naturally just takes time! I grew up with homeschool so I did have that background and have benefited a lot from that...but I have also been branching out in these early years and figuring out my own style and approach that fits my own little family and my kids, and there are things I do differently and different priorities that I have. And yes, "trends" have been a big deal in homeschool curriculum in recent years with the growth of social media. But sometimes it's those quiet old standbyes, things like Saxon and Math U See, that have been around for decades, that can be relied on.

This video is GOLD!! The biggest mistake I made was putting my kids in "traditional school" when I knew it was not a good idea. Now, that we homeschool the biggest mistake I have is overthinking everything!

This video is just Gold! 🌞 I’m all for testing, planning and time for oneself. The guilt of not doing a specific curriculum, classes, coOps, working while homeschooling etc . I need to be more consistent and with our routine. He ask for schedule and I’ve learned he works better when he has a strict routine. He also loves testing and sharing he’s master a specific part of the subject.I ask my 10yr old his opinion and I need to listen. Yes to GA lovely parks! 😂

My biggest mistake was buying a ton of curriculum. So much money was wasted. I have enough curriculum to go around. I started donating my books 6ish years in? and I learned that sometimes keeping it simple is worth it.

I’m a Georgia homeschool mom as well 😊 and the part about not fitting into the perfect Charlotte Mason type of homeschool philosophy is so me. I also really enjoy testing and grades in our homeschool (and so do my kids!) - every time I try a more “gentle” approach, I feel like it throws me way off and I’ve learned to lean into what makes OUR family thrive. Loved this ❤

We use the good and the beautiful and it works for us! I guess every family has different needs and knowing what those needs are is a blessing. I also second doing self-care. It's so important! You can't pour from an empty cup 💕

Hi Brittany! I recently found your page just 3 days ago and let me tell you that I am so happy that I did. I resonate so much with you and your homeschooling style. For the past couple of months, I have been feeling this strong urge to homeschool my children aged 11, 9, and 3. My oldest 2 have attended regular school all their life and my 3 year old was recently diagnosed with Autism. I am praying and hopefully will officially begin right after their Christmas break, so I have been doing lots and lots of research in the meantime. Thank you for your honest reviews, and tips they mean sooo much to me. 🥰

Definitely made similar mistakes, but opposite. I tried way too hard to be the scheduled type a, giant teacher, manual homeschool mom. Although I'm not a free unschooler, I'm finding out I like more flexibility in my schedule. And land in between both types. It's funny because I ditched the Good and beautiful, and now we back to it and are loving it. I'm not sure if it will work forever, but for now, the gentleness was needed to destress this momma and the kids.

Yes to a routine being important! I was fine with doing school any time of day, but my oldest greatly struggled with never knowing when lessons were done for the day. I think curriculum hopping is normal the first couple of years, as often we are still finding what works best for ourselves and our oldest… and then it all changes when the second child becomes school age and is a completely opposite learner. 😆 When you mentioned Georgia, I immediately wanted to ask you if you knew Amber from Heritage Mom! She is my favorite homeschool blogger. But then you mentioned the Charlotte Mason style is just not you. 🙂 (I get it!) Thank you for all of your genuineness and honesty in this video!

I love watching Tori from Oglesby as well! I love her personality and her enthusiasm for homeschool. However her style doesn’t work for us in my home either!! Of all KZbinrs, I would say your style matches ours the most!! And you have the enthusiasm as well. That’s why you’re my fav channel! 😆 Do you plan to ever go back to Dimensions math? That’s what my son uses but he’s only in kindergarten level so I wonder what it will be like in future levels!

I too made the mistake trying to replicate others' homeschool and the public school in our homeschool. Talk about the pressure it brought. It actually kept me from homeschooling effectively and consistently. Now, its play and Bible reading. I realized I am a traditionalist in some ways.

A worldschool mom here for 3 years now, and I can TOTALLY relate to this video. My daughter uses a mixture of an online curriculum and workbooks. But what helps me is having my child complete standardized testing using the Iowa testing and California testing so i can supplement what she needs to work on and/or struggling with. ( From Florida, and testing is not mandatory).

Just a good video. I started following you our first year of homeschooling it was your first year when your set up was downstairs your house. It was so refreshing to see someone start the same time we did and is still continuing. I bought lots of "great Curriculum" also and I have learned not because it worked for your kids, doesn't mean it will work for my kids. I have tried so many curriculums and enrichments that I regret. I love that you are open and honest about not caring for you. The fact is if you don't prioritize yourself there will be no you to care for anyone.

Yes!!! I can resonate with all of these! I’ve been homeschooling for 7 years and I fell into the same hype. This last year I gained weight because I was focusing only on the kids and not fueling myself. And I hopped around so much that I can see the grammar gaps in my older kids. Now I respect and only follow moms that are for the most part consistent in curriculum or have really prayed and thought about it A LOT! That they consider it a big deal for their kids instead of a fun new twist. I now rather bring the fun in with the “beauty” subjects and stay consistent with the core subjects. I’d say the subject I’m struggling most with staying consistent now is history. 😊 I think Sonlight books have been amazing but I wish there was a big picture text to go along with it more seamlessly. Thank you for always being so forward with your videos! And thank you to your daughter for her input! It helps a lot seeing from her point of view also ❤

You are just so genuine! I appreciate following you because of how much you do your own thing in your homeschool. I love free-spirited learning but I have to be honest with the fact that I’m a Type A person as well. So thankful you said you actually love planning (me too!) and pleasantly surprised that you enjoy standardized testing. I feel like there’s a happy medium that we can all achieve with our own homeschools and we most likely don’t need the trendy stuff to get there. We need awareness of our needs as mom-teachers and our children’s needs as students.

Thank you for this! I’m still in the early years so I don’t have a ton of experience. I feel like scripted curriculum is my friend. I also love the nature aspect of Charlotte Mason so I see us doing this in the years to come. Like you said, all of us are different and we can’t all fit into one particular mold. ❤️

Michelle G is the best! I love her channel and always look forward to her videos. Also loving your videos more and more as your ethos is seeming to align more with my views and preferences. We are a secular homeschooling family in Georgia-- third year fully on our own after a year of virtual-- and I have a 2nd/3rd grader and a 4th/5th grader, and we aim for academic rigor. So we are not Charlotte Mason-- we have tests, writing, workbooks, grades, and annual standardized testing. I am always looking for ways to push my kids to explore what they can do, and as a result of that, my kids are way above grade level in every subject. We pay attention to state standards because when/if my kids go back to public school, I want to make sure they are well equipped.

One of my biggest homeschooling mistakes is using the Good and the Beautiful. I fell into the hype of it when I should have done more research. I used various TGTB resources during my eldest's K-2nd years. Using it left gaps in my daughter's understanding in both ELA and Math. While TGTB did give her a good grasp on phonics, she didn't retain any grammar or spelling. She is an advanced reader. I tried TGTB with my son too during his K year. Both kids did not like the curriculum. They're doing so much better with having ELA subjects separate and the curriculum we're using now. They hate fluff. They're straight to the point, much like my husband and hate repetition when they already grasp the material . TGTB wasn't a good fit for them. We do use Masterbooks because they are in Grades 1 and 3 and I am just looking to give them exposure. We do look at KZbin and National Geographic materials. However, I will be moving onto something else once they reach their late elementary/early middle school years. Once they reach middle school, I will expect more retention. Also, my husband has a huge collection of books such as volumes about the history of Rome and the Federalist papers that my husband and I want them to read. Thank you for your honesty.

Thank you for your video. I am a first-year homeschooler with my six-year-old. I purchased the Good and Beautiful to implement but stopped after about a month. I am an educator and MASTERY is at the heart of me. Lol. The G&B does not provide that. I’ll pull it out here and there, but I went back to what I know as an educator.💙

I appreciate what you have said about TGTB & Masterbooks and agree with you. I have never understood the hype of TGTB & have never used their math or LA. I do like Masterbooks language for levels 2 and 3 as a grammar introduction in 2nd/3rd-ish grades. I also think they do a good job of teaching sentence structure (level 2) and paragraph writing (level 3) but then after that we move on to IEW Fix It grammar and IEW writing to build those foundational skills of language that are so important!

I think, oftentimes, when a KZbinr gets a curriculum for free they “love” it. Well it’s easy to love, promote, and continue using something for free. I have become a lot more discerning now of what people are promoting. For instance, gather round, sounds awesome but if you want to use it as a supplement, it is super expensive, while on the other hand, there are people who it as their core, and say it is not enough for their family. So to me, gather round seems like an impossible choice for our family.
