Lamya Al-Mugheiry (30 October 1973 - 8 January 2009), better known as Lamya, was a Kenyan-born English singer-songwriter and record producer. She found fame in the early 1990s as one of the lead singers of R&B group Soul II Soul, and later as a backing singer for Duran Duran. In 2002, she released her debut solo album "Learning from Falling", which included the number one Dance chart single "Empires (Bring Me Men)". Sadly on the 8th January 2009, she died from a sudden and unexpected heart attack. She was just 35 years old. 😢

You really have to see some videos of Duran Duran in the prime, mid 80s. Their original videos are amazing - Hungry like the wolf, Rio (original video), Planet earth, View to a Kill, Wild Boys, Girls on Film and on and on. Brilliant band.

The Unplugged and that tour version of Come Undone, the background, is sung by Lamya Al-Mugheiry. That how that is. The actual recording is Tessa Niles.

Lamya RIP. I seen her perform with Duran in 1995. She was not an official member of the band. She was an original member of a group called 'Soul to Soul'.

Duran Duran is 5 guys!! (Easy way to remember was how they marketed them in the 80’s….. they used to give out buttons and promotional material with a different member of the band on one of the letters of the band name…. So, Simon (singer) might be on the D for Duran while Nick (keyboards) or John (Bass) each would be on another one the letters: DURAN. It’s funny to me how the younger generation has no idea who they are. These guys DOMINATED 80’s Alternative radio and were all over MTV when MTV was great and played music videos!! Their videos were so iconic and shot in exotic locations! Their videos looked so much more expensive and seemed to be a “mini movie” type video which the head of MTV loved cause that was so original and creative at that time cause most videos were just of the band playing, so the head of MTV promoted their videos shooting them to the top of the charts. As for the woman, NO, no, NO, She is not part of the group cause just thinking about it and using common sense, why would she be the only one that he introduces by name? The band is well known. But this woman has toured with them as the main background singer since the 90’s. I’ve seen her several times while seeing them in concert. ** YOU SHOULD CHECK OUT & WATCH the first 2 videos that were played on MTV by them that helped launch them to super stardom! The songs are very catchy and remind me of a time in life where the world seemed to be a much more enjoyable and place and good music was the language that everyone spoke! Music such as the following by Duran Duran! THOSE 2 VIDEOS WERE: 1.) Hungry Like The Wolf 2.) Girls on Film

Oh, Duran Duran. I'm sure you've had multiple comments so far, but they started with 5. 3 Taylors, LeBon and Rhodes. They lost one Taylor (guitarist), then a second (drummer), over the years. The third bowed out very briefly (bass), but returned, as did one of the original Taylors (drums). But, other than stand ins for instruments, it's been the same band all along. (no shade to Warren DiMartini (guitarist), he was fantastic in the years he was there.) Kinda crazy that of all the incredible pop bands we had in the '80's, I think only Duran Duran is still current, touring and doing new music. John Taylor was my teenage crush, so DD will always hold a very special place in my heart. Doesn't hurt that they're absolutely fantastic musicians

Here's a "quick" run down of answers to your questions. I could write a book because remember, this band has been musically active and relevant for over 40 years! The original 5 were the band that took over the world in the early 80s. They were known as the Fab 5 at the time. (The Beatles were called the Fab 4. That should give you an idea of the popularity and hysteria following them). Original 5 were: Simon Lebon- vocals, Nick Rhodes- keyboards, John Taylor- bass, Andy Taylor- guitar, Roger Taylor- drums. None of the Taylors are related. The OG five split in the mid 80s and Simon, Nick and John Taylor continued on as the next iteration of DD. They carried the torch as a threesome for a bit and then hired Warren Cuccurullo as guitarist for DD. He played with them for about 10 years. He's on the videos you have seen for Ordinary World and Come Undone. There was a short reunion of the OG 5 in the early 2000s. Andy is on guitar for the Rio video you reacted to. After Warren left, when the OGs reunited, Roger Taylor stayed on, even after Andy left again. They hired Dom Brown for guitar and that has been the actual line up since then. However, DD has a very big sound. Album production is impeccable, so they always work with back up singers and musicians for live performances. It would be nearly impossible to duplicate their album sound without adding musicians and singers on stage. You can split DD into eras as far as sound, style and line up, but aside from a short period without him, the nucleus has ALWAYS been, Simon, Nick and John. Now that Roger has been back for close to 20 years, it's pretty much been the OG 4 out of 5. DD announced during their Rock & Roll Hall of Fame induction that Andy has been diagnosed with cancer. There is talk of one last reunion and a possible album in the works. Should that happen, I guarantee you..Duranies (yes, that is what we are called) will absolutely lose their 💩 Those if us who have loved this band since we were teens and grew up with them have a soft spot for the OG 5. We also know when those minds come together, killer music is created. Just know that no matter what era you look into, the Trinity of Simon, Nick and John will most likely be there, they will always look different and they will always be dabbling in something different, while being and sounding completely like DD. Unfortunately, Lamya is no longer with us.

You wondered if this was the same lineup as previous Duran Duran you'd watched. At the time of the Wedding Album they'd gone a couple years of the band founders John Taylor (bass) and Nick Rhodes (synths), along with mainstay Simon LeBon (singer) and Warren Cuccurullo (Guitar), along with a series of session Drummers like Sterling Campbell. Their classic lineup was from 1980-1985 which featured the former 3 along with Roger Taylor (Drums) and Andy Taylor (Guitar). Roger was burnt out and left in '85, while Andy fell out with the others and left in '86. Founder, Bassist, and band mvp John Taylor left the group in 1997 for personal reasons and to work on other projects. Yet he returned when the classic line of the remain Rhodes and LeBon reunited with the three unrelated Taylors in 2001. With Warren Cuccurullo leaving. Andy Taylor left again in 2006. Since then the band has used touring/session guitarist. Andy may have rejoined this year but im not sure if that formal or just session work.

Lamya without doubt was Duran’s greatest backing vocalist but will always be a shame she never had the solo career she so should of had and she died way way way to young! And for us hardcore DD fans we know Duran is about the Band……singers who sing with long winded notes and warble like a Whitney or Mariah just wouldn’t work, Duran are fundamentally a post punk band with a huge dose of dance , funk ,groove, pop, rock. But Lamya for those few years she was a backing vocalist like Curtis King who was the other backing vocalist who had been working with Duran since 1986 made the re-working of these tracks pure magical. And Lamya on Girls on Film from this MTV Unplugged sounds soooooooo cool 😎 Loving your DD reactions and hope you do many many many more And did you know Duran for a good few years in the 80’s were the biggest band / artist in the world! 1978 - present Just love Duran
