Britt, Don Williams was my first wife's favorite singer and this piece says it all. I was crying by the time I got to the end of this song. As you said, this is a beautiful love song and it describes how I felt and treated my wife. We were best friends. Most nights we would spend at least an hour in bed just talking about the day and our kids. Hearing this again reduced me to a puddle of tears. That's all I can write, I'm about to crack again.

As a wreckless and love struck youngster I copied the lyrics to this song and gave them to my Girlfriend. She never found out what I had done until after we were together for 4 years and my dad, knowing the story, thought it would be funny to play the song. This was my mom's favorite song. She met my dad when she was 12 and he was 14. They married six years later. I can remember my mom putting a Don Williams album on the record player and when this song came on, she would yell for my dad to come dance with her. As they slowly danced across the floor, she would sing this song to him. They were married for 54 years before she passed away and this was the only song my dad requested for her funeral.

Don had the most rich, smooth, buttery baritone voice in country music. Only Merle Haggard was possibly smoother, but he was a tenor and got all the accolades for all of his original song writing. Don was probably the most underrated and overlooked country singer when it came to CMA acknowledgments because he was so unassuming on stage and not flashy. His voice just commanded attention. His I Believe In You, and Lord, I Hope This Day is Good are two of the many strings of hits he had.
