@@brittreacts Yup. Another song people don't realize is really about the music industry (and more so her label politics) is Mariah Carey's "Breakdown." It was really about the effects of the label stuff on her, but she wrote it in a more general way so more people could relate to it.

The version you probably saw was Ceelo on 'Live From Daryl's House', where Daryl Hall has all different types of artists come and make live music videos with his band doing their own songs and some Daryl Hall/Hall & Oates covers. That show is a very deep rabbit hole to dive into. Some of my fave episodes in addition to Ceelo are Smokey Robinson, The O'Jays, Joe Walsh, Eli 'Paperboy' Reed, Allen Stone...but the list goes on and on...

Never ever pause a song in the middle of a Sax solo or Guitar solo!! I’m pretty sure you could get arrested for that! 😊 Also…We know you heard one version of “Sara Smile”, BUT!! You definitely need to listen to the official radio/studio version of “Sara Smile”. Next Hall & Oates “One on One”(great sax solo..& no pausing in between)! Also “She’s Gone”; “Rich Girl”, “You’ve Lost That Loving Feeling”; many more. Plus, they have a beautiful Christmas song “Home for Christmas”. Enjoy the Hall & Oates ride!

I remember seeing them in concert in about 1983 in Portland, Oregon. It was absolutely the loudest concert I have ever been to. And for one simple reason. They are used to playing in bigger indoor venues than the one in Portland. Example, if you saw them back then in Philadelphia, that place may have held about 18,000 people. This location in Portland held about 12,000 people. I believe the sound techs never dialed in down for a smaller venue. My ears were ringing for days.

Speaking about the meaning of the lyrics, John Oates has stated that while many listeners may assume the lyrics are about a relationship, in reality, the song, "is about the music business. That song is really about not being pushed around by big labels, managers, and agents and being told what to do, and being true to yourself creatively." This was done intentionally, he explained, to universalize the topic of the song into something everyone could relate to and ascribe personal meaning to in their own way. Naming "Maneater" as another example, he revealed that this was a common theme for the group's songs.[5][6] The song is composed in the key of C minor (C major for the chorus).
