Country music is real, and they sing about real things. You can love your spouse, but still be tempted. And sometimes, good people make bad choices. With that steel guitar, this song is about as country as it gets.

not in this song, but later...... - -A working day too long When everything goes wrong And a boss, who don't know ,I'm alive I once had a notion I'd get that promotion But now, I barely survive A wife too demanding With no understanding Of why, I stay dead on my feet A dimly lit tavern A willing young woman Are some of, the reasons, I cheat

@@cynthiachessani6788 Not all do, the old John Deere that I always had to drive didn't, didn't have a cab, just an umbrella to keep the sun off. I brought along an old radio that you could barely hear above the drone of the tractor, and I played whatever rock station the radio would pick up, until I just had to give up and put it on country. Randy Travis was a new artist at the time and I first heard him there, on that old tractor.

@@allenwhitmer8192 We used the smaller cabless tractors for mowing and some light hay hauling, but we were working over 3500 acres of wheat (there's 640 is a square mile for those unfamiliar) so we were using larger for the wheat fields. At the end I was driving a John Deere 8970 with like 425 hp.

@@johnnusz8278 Ours was, I think a 4420, not positive, it pulled a 20 ft Wilbeck disk and sometimes an undercutter with an anhydrous tank. not a bad tractor, grandpa and my uncle got the bigger tractors with the AC cabs and radios, my grandpa never used the radio except for the weather. We only had about 1,500 acres back then and it was usually wheat, some milo. I enjoyed my time on the tractor, it was peaceful. Anyway, my father died when I was 24 and that kind of ended my farming. My uncle inherited everything and his son took over and they bought so much land and have all the newest and biggest equipment. There are so many controls, I wouldn't know what to do in one of those things. My cousin jokes he turns on the key, punches in some numbers and goes to sleep until it's time to go home

Britt, the song is about temptation, not infidelity. The protagonist is tempted to stray but in the end stays true to his wife by being reminded by his ring. We all have temptations in life. It's how we deal with them that shows our character. He stayed true in the end.
@crystalsmith4919
@crystalsmith4919 Жыл бұрын
Well depending on what you would call infidelity, because in the song it says he was in her arms, kissing her lips, and wanting to be her "loving man"... So at least emotional cheating and if you consider any physical contact with another person cheating then the holding and kissing would count as cheating as well!

Paul Overstreet and Don Schlitz wrote this song and it always bugged me because the narrator did cheat on his wife in the second verse. However, if you listen to Paul Overstreet’s version the second verse goes “When you placed your hand on mine, I could feel desire. And when I looked into your eyes, I found myself. And I know with just one kiss, we could start a fire. But that fire would just start burning someone else.” I much prefer that and I’m not sure why Randy Travis and his producer changed it. Either way, great reaction, Britt!!

The Smothers Brothers show was VERY controversial in the late sixties. They were vocally anti-Vietnam war, and had popular bands and artists who sang anti-war songs like Pete Seeger, who the censors originally wouldn't let play on the show, but they got him back months later to sing Waist Deep in the Big Muddy, with obvious anti-war and anti-President Nixon lyrics. People like Rob Reiner and Steve Martin were writers for the Smothers Brothers, and the show also had a recurring skit called "Share a Little Tea with Goldie", about a cute hippy girl who drinks marijuana-laced tea who always greeted her viewers the same way..."High!" The brothers were fired and their show was cancelled because they bucked the censors and insisted a skit with a mock sermon by comic David Steinberg be included in the show, and when the censors wouldn't allow it, they delivered a show that was several minutes too short. The main joke they didn't allow would pass the censors easily a few years later, and now. E! showed reruns of the CBS show in the 80's.

I've always taken this as a temptation, but not cheating song.

Randy Travis is what might be called a country crooner. And he's so likable that you can't help but listen and think about what he's explaining. Even though it ain't right! Lol

Loved the reaction. "Send my Body" and "Digging up Bones" are 2 more of his great songs.

I take the song is about being tempted and almost crossing that line, but then remembers the commitment he made.
