I don’t know what Tammy had, but I want some of that. Even her ex tried to clean up and start singing with her again, he moved next door and referred to her husband as his husband-in-law. George Jones’ song “he stopped loving her today” always makes me think of her.

You mention how this song might be viewed through the contemporary lens of female empowerment but the lyrics put the woman very much in the driving seat of the relationship; she provides the 'two arms to cling to" while he is "just a man". Stand by your man, not just because of love but because he needs the strength of that support. As 'just a man' who has been steadfastly supported by my wife through some of the darkest times I can certainly appreciate that sentiment. After that moment of over-sharing... what makes Tammy's performance so incredible is not just the technical merit of her clear toned and strong vocal production but the emotion she imbues in the lyrics. These are not just words off a sheet but feelings poured straight from the heart. Not many singers in any genre can do that.

There was actually a big "to-do" between Tammy Wynette and Hillary Clinton over this song. Hillary kept trying to call Tammy to apologize, but Tammy was mad and wouldn't answer her phone. Hillary finally called Burt Reynolds, who then called Tammy and talked her into letting Hillary apologize. The whole thing was hilarious to me.

Tammy was absolutely phenomenol!!! She had such a powerhouse voice! She had a hot and heavy love affair that lasted in and out of her marriage to George Jones. She never stopped loving him and he loved her likewise! She had a list of #1 hits as long as my leg! She was born in Prentiss County, Mississippi and had a very hard life until she made a career in Country Music! She, like ELVIS, has a rabbit hole that you really should delve into. Her life reads like a novel. Please research her! "Apartment #9" is also a really good song and so is "D-I-V-O-R-C-E"! Well, actually Tammy did not have a bad song! Everything she sang was spectacular!!! She was inducted into many Hall of Fames and received many accolades and awards! She received the "LIVING LEGEND" Country Music Award, also! She was known as the "First Lady of Country Music" until the day she died! She is very missed by her fans, friends, and family. Thank you for your great reaction! Like I said recently, you are very quickly becoming my favorite reactor!

Her expression, that cracking voice, those glassy eyes on the verge of tearing up. A stunning performance. I'm not entirely sure a woman should stand by a man that's done the things her ex did (Multiple infidelities, or "hard to understand" as she puts it). Any man would be blessed beyond belief to have a woman like this and I think this woman would be appreciated more now than ever.

Tammy took alot of crap-ola for this song in some quarters, it was in the 60's in middle of the heights of Woman's Rights movement. She didn't get the uproar, lol, after all as she sings "He's just a man!" Johnny Cash was married to June Carter and Tammy, at the time, was married to George Jones... that was a stormy marriage...but she stood by George about as long as she could stand, well and then... His drinking did that in

I just learnt that this was a hit in 1968 in the States. I'm from the Netherlands and over here it wasn't a hit until 1975. And her follow-up hit over here was D.I.V.O.R.C.E. I guess standing by your man isn't enough after all. And her 3rd hit early 1976 over here (1967 in The US) was I don't wanna play house. Was Tammy trying to send a message?

I was born in the 60s, a kid/teen in the 70s and at the time I hated my parent's old school Country that they listened to - like Tammy Wynette. As the years have gone by I come to appreciate it more and more and really enjoy it now. Something else too - those classic Country artists were so appreciative of their fans and gracious and humble on stage. Its something you don't really see as much anymore.

Different time, different standards. That “flirty” business was common and not taken seriously. A lot of the old country songs reflect an attitude about the “place” of women that we question today. I just enjoy it for what it was. And I love your analysis of the message.

Johnny Cash was never in love with Tammy Wynette. By the time this show was taped, Johnny was head over hills for June Carter who was the love of his life and was with her to the day she died. Johnny loved Tammy's music but that's all. Also, at this time, Tammy was probably already in love with George Jones and she married George a year after "Stand By Your Man" was recorded. Back when Bill Clinton was president, he was involved in an affair with a young woman who was an intern at the White House. He initially denied this and while he was in denial someone asked Hillary about her reaction to his alleged affair and she rather snippily said that she was no Tammy Wynette who would "stand by my man" no matter what he did and if he really was involved with Monica, that would be the end of their marriage. Bill later admitted that he had relations with "that woman" (that's the way he put it) and of course his party forgave him, and Hillary must have forgiven him also because despite what she had said, she didn't leave him and in fact they are still together today, sort of. A lot of country fans and particularly fans of Tammy Wynette couldn't quite figure out why Hillary felt the need to drag Tammy's song into her rant about her husband, in fact we still haven't figured that out, particularly since it was not true because even when Bill admitted his affair, Hillary did exactly that...she stood by her man. I don't guess she ever apologized to Tammy for the more than a little sarcastic way she talked about this song which was one of Tammy's biggest hits. BTW, for future reference, Tammy's last name is pronounced Y-Net not Win-net. But however you pronounced it, thank you for reacting to this great song by Tammy.

When you commented about George's looks from the 70's, I think in the "He Stopped Loving Her Today" reaction, Tammy was supposedly the one that gussied him up that way. At least that's kind of what they claimed in that Tales of the Tour Bus episode on George and Tammy.

BRITT! "Your Good Girl's Gonna Go Bad" for an even rowdier side of her. But then on the other end of the spectrum, please please please check out, Too Far Gone. Her phrasing is devastating in this and it makes my allergies act up every time and I think it's a live performance also from maybe the Johnny Cash show. Just the look in her eyes and the way she sings it is so powerful, even though I just grew up hearing it on the radio and later on a cassette tape of her greatest hits that I bought. And that is all fantastic.

Johnny Cash was never interested in Tammy Wynette. He was married to June Carter Cash until he died. She was married numerous times most notably to George Jones.

Nice reaction, Britt! A true queen of Country music with a stunning voice and face! And thanks for your comments supporting (deserving) men, we need it badly in todays mixed up, combative world. You are wonderful; I can see why you are married. In my opinion you also have a knockout voice and could be on stage next to many a pop star. (Wearing silver boots and a sexy skirt! (LOL)
