This performance (ending song of the concert) of 'In Your Eyes' is taken from Peter Gabriel's 'Secret World Live' concert film and features the late, great Papa Wemba. Female voice belongs to amazing Paula Cole. This 1993 live show was filmed across two nights (16 & 17 November) at the Palasport Nuovo in Modena, Italy. The Secret World Live tour itself was in support of Peter’s sixth solo album, US. And guess what? Tomorrow night I'll attend Peter Gabriel's concert in Copenhagen, Denmark. Lucky me! 🙂

The Secret World Tour was a spiritual gathering. Tony Levin as bassist and Manu Katche as your rhytmn section is immense. Amazing! Paula Cole, Papa Wemba all poured their soul's into this performance. It features Youssou N'Dour singing a part at the end of the song translated into his native Wolof. Gabriel's lyrics were inspired by an African tradition of ambiguity in song between romantic love and love of God.

I don't know what language it is at the end, and I'm not sure who is singing it on this, but the singer on the album is Youssou N'Dour, a singer from Senegal in West Africa. The languages of Senegal are French (the official language), Wolof, ,Serer, Diola, ,Pulaar, Soninke and Malinke. I believe the song you're thinking about is "All Night Long" by Lionel Richie.

I’m certainly no dance expert but I believe the choreography is heavily African-influenced as well. The nature of African dance is communing with the earth so in contrast to western dance which features elevation from the earth, you step down deliberately on the beat. So those little hops are intentional i think.

Peter Gabriel did a lot of work towards popularizing "World Music", both by incorporating it into his own songs, and by featuring international artists on his tours. The studio version of this song features Youssou N'Dour, one of the most famous African musicians of all time. Gabriel also founded the WOMAD world music festival. I was lucky enough to see him in 2004 as part of the "Growing Up" tour, and he was accompanied by an artist from Uzbekistan, Sevara Nazarkhan. As well as being the opening act, she joined him for "In Your Eyes" and was his partner for the duet "Don't Give Up". Beautiful. Cheers, Britt. I love your positivity.

The female singer is Paula Cole who had two big hits in the 90s, "I Don't Want To Wait" (which became the Dawson's Creek theme) and "Where Have All The Cowboys Gone". She still performs and also is on the faculty at Berklee College of Music in Boston. Senegalese singer Youssou N'Dour is the one singing in his home dialect near the end. And Papa Wemba and his band are featured. The hourglass-shaped instrument is called a talking drum. Several years after its release "In Your Eyes" became a hit again when it was featured in one of the most iconic film scenes of the 1990s in the movie Say Anything.

I have seen this concert, for the second time in this tour, the following day, in Southern France and it was as good as shown on this video (extracted from the "Secret World Live"). it was actually the very best concert of the many I have seen. There were 2 stages, one square and one round (masculinity and femininity). The scenography (by Robert Lepage and Peter Gabriel) was exceptional; a phone boot coming up from the ground, a treadmill on which Peter had loaded a giant suitcase containing the members of the band, a tree coming up from the ground and of course the dome,. The choreography is inspired by tribal dances of Western Africa. Papa Wemba and Molokai did the opening and came back for the first encore. PS. I had already seen a concert of Peter on the same tour 3-4 months earlier, in the Netherlands. The talented Joy Askew was on keyboards and backing vocals (so no Paula Cole and no Jean-Claude Naimro), and the supporting artist was Ayub Ogada.

This song typifies Peters ability to blend many international influences. That piano riff, that reminded you of Lionel Ritchie "All Night Long", is commonly found in Afro-Cuban music. So there's a cross-pollination of influence there, Africa and the Caribbean. I can't recall which language they change to, but it is an African language. I want to say that it's the same language the guy with the really "cutting" voice was signing in, or at least from the same region. In fact that chant they were doing was the inspirational catalyst for this song, as i loosely translates to the connection that people feel when they see the light in the eyes of someone else.

Gabriel is pretty eclectic, and I think it's great. He's always trying new things, exploring different types of music and sounds, and helps expose his fans to new things. He's got a unique quality to is voice, too. Funny talking about the facade. A lot of older folks reach a point where they don't bother with pretense any more. Sometimes it's funny, but I think that's part of what wisdom is - not wasting time pretending to be someone you're not. That Lionel Ritchie song you're thinking of is "All Night Long".

He has 3 Lps that are considered "World Music" and much is neuvo African that you and some of your fans may like. Many people have failed to find it here in America because they don't know where to look. They are all listed under the name "Afrocelt Soundsystem". My favorite of the 3 is #3. It's an African language. Not sure if this singer is from the same country as the original singer Youssou N'door who is Senegalese! Been listening to Peter Gabriel since the 1970's. Love him. Love all the African influences and his campaign against Apartheid! ❤

Peter Gabriel has long been a very inventive musician and performer, he was a founding member of Genesis in 1967 leaving after their album The Lamb Lies Down On Broadway in 1975, moving Phil Collins from drums and backup vocals to lead vocals and drums. Genesis is another band well worth exploring. Peter has a plethora of live performances, nearly all being some of the best performances and music you will ever experience, the live videos for Growing Up Live, Secret World, the duet Peter Gabriel with Paula Cole HD Don't Give Up, Peter Gabriel - HD Signal to Noise from Growing Up Live (sottotitoli italiano)- a pure wall of music, and his exploration of classical/orchestral music such as his the video for his cover of the David Bowie song Heroes (Live in Verona 2010) about the Berlin Wall -a truly phenomenal track are just a few.

One of my favorite music videos of all time! This tour has some great videos. Try Shaking the Tree, either live from this tour, you get more Paula Cole, or the album version.

Beautiful ❤️‍🔥 I have garage that has a garage door at both ends so you can open them both and have a breeze way, on rainy days I will stand at the opening looking to the backyard and just listen quietly to the rain, and I will listen at the window to the rain; so yes I love the sound of rain 🌧 love your reaction Britt 😊 Lionel Richie-All Night Long 🌙

Hey Brit, I was lucky enough to have witnessed this masterpiece of a show in London, Wembley and you’re right more than just a show more like an event, my absolute favourite from this show was when he performed SECRET WORLD and at the end all the band disappeared into a suitcase. The lady with the amazing voice is an artist in her own right her name is Paula Cole and best remembered for the theme song to Dawsons Creak a popular show in the 90s. Paula only toured with Peter for this year the role now is done by his own daughter Melanie.

The 1st Time I saw Peter on his own was at the Bottom Line in NYC, He came out with a totally shaved head, And had a Teddy Bear, Put it on the Piano, And Sang to All the people with Cancer, "Me and My Teddy Bear, We Got No Hair , But We Don"t Care".

Britt, if you enjoy those long notes that are held forever, they are staple in Eurovision contest music as well. Husavik - My Home Town (Official Video) - is a typical Europe style song with one of those wild long end notes.

Peter not only writes great music (still does), but was one of the few who really put effort (and money) into creating a unique stage show for his audience. Britt, if you are interested, here is the entire concert (plus an additional song at the end from 2011). An amazing concert. kzbin.info/www/bejne/iJqvfqV5aq6oorM Paula Cole was unknown when Peter brought her into his group for that concert tour in 93. She credits Peter for not only giving her the "break" into a career, but awesome lessons on performing & life.

One of the more visually evocative live performances of his has to be "Growing Up" from his Live from Milan 2003 concert. He does it from inside an eerily illuminated Zorb ball ( i.e., a giant inflatable 'hamster' ball for humans). While he mostly rolls around the perimeter of the circular stage, he occasionally stops to bounce up & down, w/ the audience 'pogo-ing' along w/ him; To hear more Paula Cole, she has a much larger vocal part in "Don't Give Up" from the same concert as this one to which you just reacted, the Secret World Tour ( 1993).

This is one of Peter Gabriel’s songs that get me in a good mood almost instantly. I recommend that you also watch the ‘87 version of it that is a part of the “Live from Athens” Concert. Instead of Paula Cole, Youssou N’Dour is singing with Peter Gabriel.
