This is a pleasant surprise. Bravo 😊! They are not particularly well known outside of Canada. Icons at home 🇨🇦. Gord Downey, the lead singer of "The Hip", as fans call them, sadly died from brain cancer in 2017. They did a cross-country farewell tour while he was very ill. To say goodbye and thank you to his fans... 😢 I was fortunate to see them in Toronto for one of those shows. He was quite happy jumping around on stage and always had a lot to say during shows. This song was included in the movie Jumper in 2008, which was about time travel if you have not seen it. It worked in the soundtrack. You could try listening to New Orleans Is Sinking, 38 Years Old, Bobcaygeon, Blow at High Dough, Grace, too, Little Bones, Wheat Kings, Fifty Mission Cap, Nautical Disaster, Cordelia. But they recorded many, many really good albms / songs. It's hard to shoehorn them into one particular genre of music.

Tragically is (reasonably) well known in the Netherlands (at least in the underground scene). Saw his very last tour overhere (and possibly his first on the continent too (playing/promoting Road Apples at a huge festival in Landgraaf). He asked the audience in Eindhoven the last time (southern Netherlands) '"Anyone a request! " ?" and I screaaaaaaamed ; " A long Time running" . ".....for that gentleman in the back" and he started to play. Last time I saw that wonderful man (and band) RIP gentle soul. You're very much missed.

So true. And to think I didn’t like Road Apples until my third or fourth listen. Not from that album, but these songs resonated with me It’s a good life… and Fiddlers Green And sometimes it wasn’t the words he sang. Sometimes it was how he sang as though straight from his soul.

haha, love you Britt, what a choice this was, love your reaction, the late great Gord Downie was an amazing song writer/lyricist and you were hard pressed to figure out the meaning in a lot of his material but it was always deep and clever with a healthy dose of goofy. one of the best live peformers i've ever seen, it was not unusual to see him spiral off into a 5 minute improvised monolog during a performance, check out the live version of Highway Girl.

100 million thumbs up from a Canadian. These guys are icons in Canada, despite being on SNL, Letterman, they never cared to go south of the border to sell records. The Hip's final concert before Gord's death was broadcast live for free on Canadian tv and i believe is the 3rd highest viewed thing in Canadian tv history. RIP Gord Downey. As a Canadian, I can't explain to people from other countries how much these guys are a fabric of Canada, and so universally loved by the entire country. The Hip will forever be in my playlist. The Tragically Hip were very good and even though their musicianship is spot on regardless of what "genre" they are playing, I think they were just a little too quirky for US commercial airplay. You yourself had mentioned several times the strumming and beat were fantastic but you couldn't quite put your finger on what they are. Welcome to the Hip. As several other people here already mentioned there are many great songs. If you want more quirky and uniquely Canadian, I suggest Bobcaygeon, if you want tragic, then 38 Years Old is a sad story and finally, if you want a little bluesy (which is my recommendation for the next song) check out New Orleans is Sinking. This was written well before the floods and isn't connected in any way, but that guitar... that wonderful guitar.

You say that, but TTH were constantly on the radio through the '90s in Buffalo. And they still might be, I left. I think if you were in a border town you got a lot of TTH. I'm no Canadian, but I've seen a LOT of episodes of Trailer Park Boys, so... you know... honorary Canadian, eh? Here's the Hip songs that you've got to try: "New Orleans Is Sinking" "Bobcaygeon" "38 Years Old" "Wheat Kings" "Grace, Too" "Scared" "Nautical Disaster" "Blow At High Dough" "At The Hundredth Meridian" "Courage (For Hugh MacLennan)" "Locked In The Trunk Of A Car" and "Fifty Mission Cap". There are other songs worthy of your attention, but this should give you a good start. The first few I listed would be where you should probably begin, though.

You want a "Hip" song that will tear your heart out Britt, listen to "Fiddler's Green." For along time they rarely played it live because it was too difficult. Beautiful, haunting.

My high school homeroom teacher was best friends with Gord Downie. He had photos with the Hip, tour posters, and backstage passes hanging all over his room. When Gord lost his fight with cancer, it was the first time I had EVER seen my teacher NOT smiling. It was indeed tragic.

“It’s a Good Life, if You Don’t Weaken” “Locked in a Trunk of a Car” “Little Bones” Would be 3 I’d love to see. Especially It’s a Good Life, if You Don’t Weaken, IMO although not their most popular I think it’s their best written song.

The video for It's a Good Life if You don't Weaken is a bit of a masterpiece. Like Gord's lyrics it hints at so many meanings.

The band was so brilliant. Talented, educated, and certainly not metaphorically challenged. The music that causes introspection.

I was singing this song in the car going "You are an anti-centric" and my gf says "What the heck are you singing?" I said " that Hip song anti-centric" And she asked me what it was about and i replied that I figured it was about a guy that is so the opposite of eccentric he is anti-centric. She goes "It's Ahead By a Century you moron"

As much as this is a bit of a love song about looking towards the future it can also take many meanings. Like political progression and where as society we can live in a more idealistic world. When you hear "you are ahead by a century" it's probably better to not think of yourself but your partner or your children. And the slight changes from first verse to second with how the dream is first "where the hornet stung me" to "when the hornet stung me" and from having a feverish dream to having a serious dream. That before you were thinking of the future, but now that you're in the future life is more real. And the songs conclusion with "disappointing you is getting me down". Contains everything we feel for when we don't meet our partners or our societies dreams.

You will love this rabbit hole. Canadian poet and storyteller. You will laugh and sing and... cry when you find out how tragically cancer took him away from us. Get to Bobcaygeon, Courage, New Orleans is Sinking, Blow at High Sough, Boots or Hearts, Wheat Kings, Something On, Little Bones, Locked in the Trunk of a Car, AT the Hundredth Meridian... it just goes on and on and on and on.

Definitely should check out this same song. From their Farewell tour in 2016. As stated above in other comments. Lead singer Gord Downie was dying of brain cancer. So the band decided to do one last tour of Canada. ABAC was routinely either the last song of their set, or the final encore performance. This happened on the final show in their hometown of Kingston Ontario. 1/3 of our country tuned in to watch that show live on Canadian broadcasting channel CBC. Not a dry eye in the place or in most homes that night

Gord Downey was a hell of a poet/songwriter and performer. His lyrics were abstract, but usually deep and meaningful. You can't always interpret a Hip song, but you can certainly feel it's vibe. The Hip are music royalty in Canada. Nice to see you reacting to one of our best.
