I agree that when you get older, you begin to reflect on your life. "I was there and I saw what you did." Yes, I was there because it was me. We remember the good and bad, but the bad weighs on us and we never forget. I think you get it. What measure of bad doesn't matter.

I saw Phil 4 times live... twice solo, and twice as lead singer of Genesis. The guys stage presence is way underrated. He's a hell of a showman. Great vocalist. Sounds as good live as he does in studio. Maybe better. And he could be pretty funny on stage as well. Between his solo career and Genesis, Phil owned the '80s. This song of course was always a showstopper. Check out "Long Long Way to Go" by him when you get a chance.

@hoosiermaker2358
@hoosiermaker2358 3 жыл бұрын
Firstly, live is NOT always better.. period.. So, I know there are two sides to this debate on live versus original/lp. To me ,its like putting on your shoes before you put on your socks. Having bought and listened to music for over 50 yrs and been to almost every great concert of the 60s 70s and 80s, over 100 shows, for sure, I think I can speak with experience. For almost any FIRST listen, you want to hear the song as the band intended. I've seen ozzy so buzzed he could hardly stand. It sounded terrible. Aerosmith,, seen them many times. Again, Steven Tyler and the boys partied throughout the show, producing not so good vocals. Boston, 1977,, They were terrible in concert that night. And the list goes on. Don't get me wrong, I love live music as much or more than the next guy, but you must hear the music first, As intended. THEN,, seek out whatever other version you want. I get it. Its cool to watch a band playing the song, but you never know what it will sound like or how true it is to the original . With all that said, The Freebird live version in Oakland, 1977 will thoroughly please. An example of a great live version. Hope this helps..

@@hoosiermaker2358 Gotta agree 100%. I saw all of the greats live in the 70's, 80's, and 90's. Some shows were fabulous; some it was like the group was just going through the motions. But I will say that when live is right it's often far and away better than studio. Some live performances are just epic for whatever reason. But it's much better to see these epic live performances if you're already familiar with the studio version. Another epic live version is Pink Floyd Comfortably Numb Pulse tour 1994. As good as the studio version is this one is much better.

@@hoosiermaker2358 But did you ever hear Genesis (or Collins) LIVE? Mind blowing experience. I can not express how impactful seeing something like this live is. Genesis did not do drugs, they rehearsed like hell (listen to a C. Thompson interview) and left it all on the stage. As great as Genesis is on recordings, it is X2 live. Maybe it is adding Daryl and Chester that gives them an added dimension, but I speak from experience.

Wikipedia: Collins wrote the song amid the grief he felt after divorcing his first wife Andrea Bertorelli in 1980. In a 2016 interview, Collins said of the song's lyrics: "I wrote the lyrics spontaneously. I'm not quite sure what the song is about, but there's a lot of anger, a lot of despair and a lot of frustration." I always thought it was a song about witnessing a crime, but It seems to ne about witnessing the demise of a marriage. Are they the same thing?? lol!

Thos man is a living legend. To sing and drum is like watching in ore with jaw dropped to the floor. I mean never mind all the different parts working together, left hand right foot and vice versa, but to have a smooth constant tone without no bumps in his voice from drumming is having complete control of his mind and body and sole. This has got to be the best drum fill to a song ever in the history of music. No matter how many times you watch it seems to better with each watch. Musician genius. The amount of artists that have requested phill Collins on all genres is a credit to his career. Living legend and yet not been knighted! Only 3 people in music history who have sold 100 minion albums as a band and as a solo artist. Sir Paul McCartney, Micheal Jackson and phill Collins. Amazing

I’ve seen it many times, but just came out of a two surgery 8 day stay at the hospital, but my spirits were lifted and I cried when Phil jumped on those drums and your reactions were great too. Thanx

I watched this performance and reactions to it numerous times but I literally cried now boys! Watching you discover and appreciate music that I love is a feeling I can not describe! Try to watch just for yourselves how Phil’s 17 year old son Nicholas is playing the drums. He joined him at his world tour in 2019.
