Yes! During the 70’s Freddie voice was a beautiful Lyrical Tenor. As he matured and practiced, his voice became a beautiful and powerful Dramatic Tenor. You will notice the difference when you hear him sing this song at Montral ‘81. It’s one of my favorite performances by Queen (along with many others!).

I agree, and I don't think you will get many arguments either, he didn't just stick to one genre like every other singer, he did anything and everything. I grew up listening to Michael Jackson, I thought he was a great singer, but even he wasn't as good as Freddie Mercury.

One of my favorites! But to watch Freddie perform this live, is a life changing event! You must react to the Montreal 1981 performance of Somebody To Love. You can tell this was written from Freddie's heart! It has a Gospel felling partly because Aretha Franklin was Freddie's favorite singer. Well done!

In an interview I watched recently, Brian May, the guitarist, was talking about how he and Roger (the drummer) attended a concert in 1970 at The Royal Albert Hall by Led Zeppelin. They were up in front, and were blown away by Zeppelin. They were planning on putting together a rock band right then, and in Zeppelin they saw what they wanted: the amazing guitar, the great drumming, and the charismatic frontman. What they wanted to add were vocal harmonies, because they could both sing very well. When they found Freddie, they found exactly the perfect person to complete the picture of what they wanted to do. This is an emotional song, but for me, Life Must Go On is the killer track, because it was Freddie’s last great song and he sang it when he was so ill. Brian I think wrote it and presented it to Freddie, knowing that he might not be able to do it, as it’s a demanding vocal part. The story goes that Freddie downed.a shot of vodka and proceeded to kill it.
@ZENOBlAmusic

They were already performing their own music in 1970 as part of the band Smile which was created in 1968 before Led Zeppelin existed. The band Smile actually had a very small once off recording deal in 1969, and they released an album. Smile were already performing vocal harmonies and focusing on heavy guitars. Queen loved Led Zeppelin, but there were also many other people around to draw inspiration from before led Zeppelin was formed. Such as Cream and Jimi Hendrix. Check out this great interview with Brian May were he explains how Queen came about: kzbin.info/www/bejne/mpLJap1urdOUhbs The funny thing is that when Queen was signed initially around 1972, they though Brian May would be the main focus of the band, because guitar players were so popular at the time. But Freddie just stole the spotlight.
@w.geoffreyspaulding6588
@w.geoffreyspaulding6588 4 жыл бұрын
@@ZENOBlAmusic I will watch the interview.....thanks for the link. But I will say that the story I told was also from Brian......so yeah, I wouldn’t argue that other bands influenced Brian and Roger at all. But the charismatic frontman in Plant was something that they wanted to add to break through I think.

Freddie's voice is unique, powerful but also soulful. I know many people suggest listening to the 1981 live version of Somebody To Love from Montreal. There is nothing like SEEING Freddie and the band in action but the studio version of Somebody To Love is far superior from a sound perspective as Freddie's voice was stronger and clearer on the album as opposed to the concert in question. You really hear his range on the record.

The key to all the vocalist in the 70s in the 80s in before is that they had no expectations of being “computer corrected” in their vocals in the studio much less on stage where they had to be as perfect as possible. They learned how to sing and they used their voices as appropriate. No gimmicks with few exceptions. Take note of the fact that many groups to include queen used multiple overdubs to achieve their choir like vocals. Some requiring hundreds of takes.
