They really missed the boat in releasing this production on DVD. So fortunate to have seen it live. My favorite musical of all time.

They wanted to make a movie version in the seventies when great movie stars like Davis,Crawford,Rogers and Swanson were still alive and they would have played the older ladies roles. They didnt consider Alexis Smith and Dorothy Collins to repeat their roles but they thought of Elizabeth Taylor , Joan Collins orJean Simmons as Phillis and Doris Day , Debbie Reynols or Julie Andrews as Sally with John Mac Martin or Gene Kelly as Ben and Gene Nelson or Dick Van Dyke as Buddy ,I dont know why .they didnt think of Smith who was a fourties movie star,But it wasnt done. i dont know who could play the roles now.

Shirley MacLaine, Merryl Streep, Mary Testa, Elizabeth Ashley, Bette Midler, Cate Blanchett, Halle Berry, Diane Keaton, Helena Bonham Carter, Hugh Jackman, Michael Douglas and Michael Keaton, to name a few. I could think of others, but not right now.

What is a typical musical like?

Alas, I dont think so. I saw this production in previews last summer before heading back up to school and it was beautiful. If you live in NYC though, and have a NYPL Library Card, I think the library/archives at Lincoln Center can let you watch the official video recording they made for posterity.

I'm 16 and I'm in love with Follies!!!

Good for you! Wow, you have such a great taste in music considering your age! Btw, the characters who intrigued me the most are the older broads: Heidi, Solange, Hattie, Emily, and Carlotta. I sometimes feel like Sondheim should've delved a lot more deeper into their stories instead of the four main characters. In fact, when I found out that they're mounting a new production of Follies in D.C. I wondered if there are new songs for DeeDee & Sandra. Shame they left out Vincent & Vanessa... :(

I had a prejudice to the musicals because I thought they all sounded like the operas, at 19 I discovered the music of Sondheim for merrily we roll along, follies and A little night music and although it is one of the composers with more classical melodies and many consider boring, I got caught, along with their lyrics and stories, maybe it's because I've been very neurotic since I was young, but I never imagined starting to love musical theater for the classics and finally I ended up knowing modern musicals, but nothing like classics today with 23 years I maintain that position.

Looks good for Bernadette to win the Tony!

That's okay, at least I'm glad you appreciate how talented the actors are. I honestly don't recommend Follies to people under their mid-20s unless they're theatre geeks like me. You can explore Follies later on when you're older. I used to be a massive Andrew Lloyd Webber fan and I hated Sondheim when I was like in my late teens and early 20s but nowadays I look up to him as the unparalleled genius that he is. Follies became my favorite musical ever and it's Sondheim at his inimitable best imho.

Victoria Clark does so much more with the role in Los Angeles right now than Bernadette Peters did. I suggest that those of you who love the show make an attempt to see her in it! She is truly astonishing.

I'm agree! It's a shame that in Italy (where I live...) Sondheim is a perfect unknown!

Why do the songs BP sings sound like they have slowed them down, a bit laboured like your are willing her to start the next line each time?

Please don't let this musical close after its Los Angeles season. Take it to every major American city. Then bring it to Sydney and Melbourne. Then take it BACK to New York, for a long run on Broadway. There should be a law that makes everyone see great musicals like [THIS] "Follies".

Yes, you're obviously way too young. You haven't been on the Planet long enough.

I saw it in NYC not that great. In love with theater just not this show. My mom really liked it. I think its just because I'm young and I can't really relate to the show. But the actors were amazing!

I loved the show in DC but hated the red dress on Bernadette Peters, totally wrong for the character. I saw Dorothy Collins in the original, Peters doesn't even come close in protraying the lost hope of the character as Dorothy. Just my opinion.

She seems to me too glamorous to play Sally. Sally shouldn't look as good as she does. I know Bernadette can't help being beautiful, but they could have given her frumpier costume and hair....

I wish she did. Audra is talented but is becoming far too overrated. And she has more than Bernadette and Patti Lupone because Bernadette hardly does Broadway plays. Audra does more plays than musicals
