I don't know why people question Purdy's arm strength so much. He leads the league in pass attempts for 20+, 30+, and 40+. Highest in the league when it comes to air yards / per attempt and is right below Jalen Hurts for overall air yards. I agree that he is money in the 10-20 yard range but he is more than capable of the long the ball.

All NFL quarterbacks are capable of the long ball. The only real difference is how long passes take to get there, and how quickly the window can close and they still get the ball in there. That's the category of elite that Brock doesn't have, but clearly he makes up for it for this incredible anticipation and the high level, reliable play of his teammates.

@@PlaySAI would bet money that Brock is a lot better at making those throws than you think and that the fact of the matte is 2 fold. Brock is the leader passer in a stat known as Air Yards and 2ndly the Shannahan offense is based off of getting defenders Out of possrt

Purdy reminds me of a couple of former 49er QBs you might have heard of. Neither Montana or Young had truly elite arm strength, but both were very capable of beating defenses deep, so they had to respect it. Purdy is very similar in that regard. He's good enough throwing the deep ball that DBs have to honor it. If you condense the field on him, he will burn you. We've seen this. But man, just like Montana and Young, this guy is like a surgeon in the intermediate game, and that's where he makes his living. If people can't understand that YAC is a by-product of elite accuracy, anticipation and decision-making then, maybe football isn't really their thing, because that shit is beautiful to watch.

Probably because he looks like a 12 year old midget. lol But if any of these people have had the pleasure to play and interact with a D1 collegiate and or an NFL QB then they would not be so ignorant of these things.

I'm fairly certain the Kittle "checkdown" at 8:30 was a designed play specifically for Kittle. It's pretty much the same play that Purdy got hurt on, and they wanted to bluff Reddick to eff with him. The other routes are just there to suck the linebackers up and get even more room for Kittle.
@greyklopstock7155
@greyklopstock7155 9 ай бұрын
Agreed. I feel like it was completely designed to trick Hasson into thinking it was the same thing so he would willingly give up the edge. Purdy is essentially bait there, and Reddick thinks he's got a straight shot at Brock only to run into kittle full speed. But Kittle just chips Reddick, so Reddick thinks he's "won" the matchup and goes after Brock. Every defender is on the opposite side of the field, and since Reddick gave up the edge, nobody is there to stop Kittle and he gets nothing but green grass for 25-30 yards. I'd agree that that play feels like a designed "check down" that's really a schemed 25-30 yard gain. This is what Shanahan does to coordinators and defenses. He sets things up, intentionally runs plays out of specific sets so that teams THINK they got their number. And then after bullying you in the run, he remixes that same formation you thought you figured out and gets huge chunks. It's what makes the niners so hard to stop. Cause they'll seriously set stuff up several weeks in advance, making sure to put the same type thing on film several times just to mind fuck you with a variation of it later.

JT, love the channel. Your videos are awesome. That screen pass to Kittle was the primary read on that first TD drive. All the other WR's were running essentially clearing routes away from the right side of the field. Kittle did a chip on Reddick and then released. This was actually the same formation/pre-snap action that Purdy got hurt on during the NFC Championship game. They purposely used Reddick's aggressiveness against him on this. The idea was to create that void in the flat and let Kittle run for days. They would use Reddick's aggressive against him again later on with the end around TD by Deebo.

Thank you for this analysis…for those of us that never got the opportunity to play except in the backyard because we didn’t have even flag football for girls in the 70s…it’s giving us more understanding of the position🙏 My dad played at SMU with Don Meredith as QB…would have loved to see those old films broken down. I grew up with Roger Staubach as the neighbor who drove his kids to Mass in the station wagon and Coach Landry rode in the church bus all the way from Dallas to Colorado for youth ski trips. The players and coaches were more accessible than today and that connected girls and boys to the teams. Andrew Luck and years later CMAC was always so good about talking to my boys after Stanford Home games…I’m going to be very sad to lose the PAC12 QB rivalries…would love to see you break down the last PAC12 championship between Nix and Penix…both so competitive. PAC12 went down as a great year in the end😢

Piggybacking off the Deebo tunnel screen TD; That's what makes CMC so special as a player. @jonnydel Football Academy remarked on the backfield shift in a recent livestream, specifically as a response to JTO's criticism of it. He said that the point of shifting in the backfield is to make the defense respond to the motion immediately because someone shifting in the backfield doesn't then have to stop and get set before the snap. If you're up on the line and do pre-snap motion, you have to stop and set for a second before the ball is snapped in order to avoid a false start, but if you're in the backfield, the ball can be snapped while you're in motion. So, when they do that, if the defense is in man, the defender assigned to the back has to respond to that shift right away, revealing part of the defensive plan in the process, because the snap could happen at any point during that motion.

The anticipation on the CMC wheel route is INSANE. Watch - Purdy starts his throw when CMC is **just starting** his outside move on the linebacker. The ball is over halfway there when CMC turns upfield, looks up and the ball is right there. HOLY. CRAP. MAN.

The thing about Deebos second TD that impresses me is that deebo was his 4th READ! How many qbs with multiple guys bearing down are actually going to stay poised long enough to get to the 4th read and try to flush the pocket. He knows he’s going to get hit. That’s what separates Purdy

Great work. I look forward to your analyses weekly. From my perspective CMC lining up back leaves multiple options for him to catch and run, or even heft a TD throw like he did last season. In the run, CMC is very good at using this space to make great maneuvers and find gaps. If he did motion close to the line these would not need to be defended. That being said they do get sloppy with it and have him at a stop or not transitioning crisply to receiver mode. Again great work. Keep it up.

Great job highlighting Aiyuks route running and the shuffle motions. Weird that CMC ran that same double move route three times, the last one for the ruddy sure looked the best. I think shanahan is using the shuffle motion to spread the defense out as much as possible and the depth of the motion creates more horizontal and vertical space in the defense, allowing for more layered throws and less defenders near our pass catchers. I come from more of a soccer background and our goal (pun not intended) as a defense was to shrink the field, and then on offense we wanted to spread the defense out as much as possible and get the ball to our playmakers with great timing and in space to attack the goal. I also thought it was really strange the CMC didn’t run that 15yd curl route deep enough to get a first down when Purdy missed him high to the right of the field early in the game. Sure didn’t look good. How do you think Aiyuk stacks up against the best route runners in the league? He sure seems like one of the best, but I’m biased cause I’ve loved him since we drafted him.

Purdy’s accuracy and capital-A Anticipation is what makes him so special (and his amazing processing speed). If Hurts had Purdy’s anticipation skills, a bunch of those big pass breakups to Brown don’t happen and this is a much closer contest. Niners are straight up lucky, lucky, lucky to have him.

Purdy showed amazing anticipation, arm strength and “surgical accuracy” on every throw but especially to Aiyuik on that out pattern after Greenlaw gets ejected on 3rd and 10 that basically starts the downward spiral for the eagles. 6 straight tds to end the game?!? Niners have so much confidence now, with a QB like Glock and the rhythm, poise accuracy and anticipation of how he distributes the ball. It’s unquestionably his MVP year and a meteoric beginning to his first full year as a starter. Dude is only 17 games deep now and he’s doing this, just think what it’s going to look like in year 10?!? Multiple rings and multiple MVP’s from the last pick of the draft. Wise decision offloading Lance and sticking with Purdy.

After Jimmy G restructured his contract last year, Purdy was the 4th string QB, behind Lance, Jimmy G, and Nate Sudfield. Sudfield had been paid $2 million to become a 49er, but Purdy, the rookie, beat him out. That decision was the wisest of them all. 🤨

Purdy can definitely do it. I think JT hit the point that maybe he just knows the intermediate is basically money so he just goes for it. I'm sure Purdy will look at film and see the Aiyuk miss in the endzone and see Deebo open and make the adjustments. Kid knows what to do with the ball

The first big pass to Kittle was meant to be only to Kittle. He came across to intentionally chip to make it look like we're blocking Reddick and they knew no one would be covering Kittle. It was a master play call. The other routes were meant just to clear the space

On the "missed" opportunity to Deebo on the corner, I wonder if its a timing issue and less of a "can he make that throw". Corner is kind of in between Deebo and Aiyuk, and Purdy likes to get the ball out quick if a throw is there. I could see a scenario where he doesnt want to wait that extra half second or maybe hes told not to wait. Really interesting play.

On the bump motion we see CMC and Deebo in pre-snap... That wheel route up the side line by CMC has been in the 49er playbook for pretty much Shanahan's entire 7 years and it is always seems to be open at some point in a game. Jimmie couldn't hit it, usually over-throwing. Brock missed it earlier this year. It was a scream-at-the-tv delight to see it finally connect after all this time of seeing that guy open and never taken advantage of. But that's not the only reason they run that bump motion. Obviously, as you point out JT, if it's the only motion it tells Purdy man or zone. Also, Kyle has a plays where it indicates the possibility of a screen to that side, forcing the coverage to honor it. They ran that play the week before against the Seahawks. If the coverage is in zone, when the back bumps in motion outside the tackles it changes the coverage rules of the D, something you know that Shanahan is going to exploit. And then there is the counter they ran in for a tuddy a few weeks back. Who knows what else Shanahan has up his sleeve... On the air mail out of bounds to CMC, there early in the game, he's the last receiver in the progression, and at that point the play is intended to be to the sidelines because its late and it gives the opportunity to keep the ball high and safe, reduce risk. I think they were expecting zone and got man and either way, I don't think CMC is intended to be a primary on that call. Maybe not the greatest design in that situation, but you can see why they use that motion so much. I really like how many WR/TE short outs they threw early, which really aren't their bread & butter. But they used it early and often and even on the first two drives where it wasn't successful, it was still having an effect. By the third crack at the cat, with that first 1st down, the Niners were able to pry open up the middle of the field, thus the inside run game, and thus the lethal play-action killers.

The screen play TD at the end. I can't remember the last time I saw a screen play work like how it works when a team is having its run through the day before with no defense. Every single offensive lineman was able to get out in front at the right timing. Amazing. Eagles D-line was gassed too so that probably helped.
