I became a fan of the KC Athletics in 1967 - and the team moved to Oakland in 1968. This is a good video but there are multiple sides of the story with moving from Kansas City to Oakland. Many do not realize this but the foundation for the A's championships from 1972-74 began in Kansas City. The team developed and flourished in Oakland. The local media has never helped the A's franchise and many individuals who follow MLB need to recognize how Charles O. Finley created the team that won championships.

Thanks for the great history lesson, Brodie, as I learned some new things! I have been a die-hard A’s fan since I was 9 years old after going to my first A’s game at the Coliseum in May 1971. I have been fascinated by the history of the A’s since I was a kid, after seeing Lefty Grove throw out the ceremonial first pitch at the Coliseum during the 1972 World Series. Two other players that emerged from the Kansas City A’s, who I consider key to the A’s success in Oakland, were Rick Monday and Dave Duncan, even though both were traded the players they got were also keys to the A’s success, Monday for Ken Holtzman after the ’71 season and Duncan for Ray Fosse after the ’72 season. Even though I have been living in Anchorage, Alaska since 1978, I still listen to the A’s radio broadcast on MLB audio, just like when I loyally listened to Monte Moore when I was a kid. I will be heartbroken to see the A’s leave Oakland and I am still hoping for a miracle, like in 1978 when the A’s moving to Denver was almost a done deal with Marvin Davis buying the team.

Actually the A's did have their own ballpark. In Philadelphia. Shibe Park (later known as Connie Mack Stadium) was built by the A's owners. Pictures of it show that it was a beautiful place. Eventually they shared it with the Phillies, but it was owned by the A's.

I see someone else pointed out that the Sacramento Kings evolved from the Kansas City/Omaha Kings, Kansas City Kings, Cincinnati Royals, and the Rochester Royals/Seagrams...I think that franchise should keep the American Tourister Award...I became a fan of the Oakland A's because of the Irascible Charlie Finley. In fact, Oakland has, in true Hell's Angels tradition, been a major pain in the side of at least two of the Big Four major league sports - with BOTH Charlie Finley AND Al Davis constantly flipping their respective leagues the proverbial bird. Before and after court battles. Charlie O was responsible for the A's attitude during the halcyon years; everything from the outrageous (for the time) facial hair, including Rollie Fingers' handlebar, barbershop quartet production to the white cleats and flashy uniforms (for the time) that were a huge middle finger to baseball - in particular to the New York Yankers - highly visible on national television...That alone would forever endear the A's franchise to me, but sad to say this John Fishwrap character is the polar opposite of Finley - a two-bit jerk who was born on third base and thinks he hit a grand slam. I don't see progress being made on the stability of this storied franchise until Fishwrap is separated from it completely, and his bestie Manfred also gets the heave-ho. Neither will admit to a mistake, much less malfeasance, so they will continue to double down on this fustercluck until it's all a pile of ashes...

More attention should be drawn to the way Charlie Finley ran the A's straight into the ground. It's not only a somewhat entertaining story - particularly the side plot where he shopped the A's, both before and after moving them to Oakland, around to Louisville, Denver, New Orleans and other cities, only to have them all say, "Yeah, we'll gladly take the A's, provided *you* aren't part of the package."

Charlie Finley was one of the greatest innovators in the history of modern sports; post-season night baseball, the Designated Hitter, his idea for a Designated Runner to speed up the game, and memorable promotions like Peter Cottontail the mechanical rabbit ball boy, Charlie O the live mule mascot, and the kelly green and fort knox gold uniforms that make the A's stand out to this day. Finley also built one of the great modern day baseball dynasties, 72, 73 74 World Champions, and 71, 72,73,74, 75 western division champions. His run was ended after he lost virtually all his top players in the first free agent draft in 1976. As a young fan following from across the country, I watched riveted as he used every trick in the book to rebuild the team,. I remember in the months after that first free agent draft, he traded his Manager, Chuck Tanner, to Pittsburgh for $100,000 and catcher Manny Sanguillen - to this day, I have never heard of anyone trading a manager. Finley was able to rebuild the team to the point where the A's won a division championship in the shortened season a few years after he sold the team, hiring manager Billy Martin prior to selling the team. He did the rebuild on a shoestring, with nothing but determination and his innovative flair. Finley saw the writing on the wall and understood that undercapitalized teams would have a hard time succeeding in the free agent era. I recall he tried to sell the team to Denver oilman Marvin Davis, who was going to move the team to that city. Oakland got a reprieve when the sale fell through.

You forgot an important aspect of the Athletics move to KC: it shouldn't have happened. There was a deal in place, agreed to, and signed, that would've kept them in Philly. However Johnson convinced one of Connie Mack's sons to vote against the deal in exchange for a job for he and his son when the team moved to KC.

Thanks for the great podcast. I'm an A's fan living here in Milwaukee. I very saddened by this move. You were right about the Sacramento Kings having four homes. They started as the Rochester Royals, moved to Cincinnati in about 1957, moved to Kansas City/Omaha in about 1972, and changed name to Kings, and then just Kansas City in about 1975. They moved on to Sacramento in about 1985. They almost moved again to Anaheim. That would have been their fifth home. I REALLY hope something happens, and they stay in Oakland.

That's where I'm really upset with Manfred. There were transient teams before Sac Kings, NJ Devils (KC then Col) that needed some moves before they found their "forever home". Some differences in this case: 1) Again, the A's are playing in their 56th season in Oakland. No team that started after the 1800's has played in a market that long only to leave the market. Unlike 60 years ago, we have teams from coast to coast already. When the Kings were threatening to move from Sac 10 years ago, you could make a better argument they were still transient as they were in Sac only about 25-30 years. Yet, Stern fought for them to stay. I'm sure Silver would jump at the chance to bring NBA back to Seattle when presented with the opportunity. The A's forever home should be the Bay Area. Some people see the commissioner as the keeper of the game, yet Selig and Manfred haven't lifted a finger to try to keep the A's in the Bay Area. Manfred is just nonchalant about the A's moving as if they've been in Oakland less than 10 years, didn't really win, and it was just a short stop for them. 2) In this day and age, we have the internet and social media. We have great media people like Brodie and Casey Pratt, and others who can call out the BS and give us the real information in real time instead of the powers that be pulling the wool over our eyes. We can see right through Fisher, Kaval, and Manfred. Thank you for that.

I have no dog in this fight, but I can see that MLB covets Las Vegas and doesn't think highly of Oakland. Not to mention that Oakland A's fans seem to have a blindspot towards the actions of Oakland and California officials' incompetence. Shibe Park was most definitely specifically built for Mr. Mack and Mr. Shibe's Athletics. Other sports did not use it until much later, and that was more or less as an afterthought. KC Muni was built for baseball, but the Chiefs would later use it once the AFL started in 1960.

Also, there was a slight little thing that happened after Finley announced the move: Sen. Stuart Symington of Missouri threatened to pass legislation removing MLB's anti-trust exemption if KC didn't get a team. The AL wasn't planning on expanding until 1970-71, but because of the threat, they placated KC with the Royals - and forced Seattle to field a team three years before they had a decent ballpark. (That did NOT end well. Just ask Bud Selig.)

Interesting review of the history. The A's may very well have had their own stadium in Philadelphia. But Shibe park was old, and Connie Mack was a much earlier, much different owner in Philadelphia. Teams were often their own financial entity, where today no one owns a team that doesn't have big financial interests elsewhere. I saw in the comments and it's correct the Rochester/Cincinnati Royals became the Kansas City Kings (and for some fun, for a couple years were the Kansas City/Omaha Kings). Then moved to Sacramento. I also think that's 4x moves. Also, KC actually had a very short lived National League Franchise called the Cowboys, and also had a short lived NFL franchise, that went by both the name Blues and Cowboys. Another very interesting piece regarding the history of the move is that when the A's were finally allowed to move, Stuart Symington, Senator from Missouri pitched a major fit, and threatened all of MLB with the removal of the anti-trust exemption. This scared all of the owners, so they agreed to expand and provide Kansas City an expansion team in 1971. But Symington didn't want to wait that long, and it got pushed up to 1969. They came into the AL with the Seattle Pilots, that only lasted one year, and then promptly moved to Milwaukee as the Brewers. The NL brought in the Astros (started as Colt .45's) and the Montreal Expos (now Nationals). The A's in Kansas City was one of the biggest jokes. Arnold Johnson made them just a minor league team for the Yankee's since he had financial ties to the Yankee's owners. And Charlie Finley, who had some great ideas, also proved quickly he was not a good owner for baseball. And it's fascinating that while he had some great teams in Oakland, he also had some of the absolute worst teams in baseball, and embarrassing attendance levels in Oakland as well. And as a kid growing up in Kansas City, we were basically taught to hate the A's because of all of this history, and how KC was cheated by the A's & Finley. And then having the Chiefs biggest rival, the Raider's, also being in Oakland left KC very jaded over the A's. But KC got their team and while far from a perfect ride, we've had much better ownership. Interestingly the A's 70's dynasty was taken over by the Royals in the later 70's, but that didn't end in a World Series title. And many of those ALCS against the Yank's had former A's players. So that kid that grew up hating the A's because of their shafting my hometown just smiles a little as I watch the latest moving fiasco.

If Vegas fell through, what's the plan? The A's would have to get out of the coliseum and let's be honest, the coliseum is at the end. You have to get new owners, a land deal, a stadium deal with private money. In the interim, your best bet is striking a deal with sacramento and Fresno and maybe a college team in the region, to balance out your home schedule. Also, they have the big Union deal and union's run the state legislature in Nevada. I used to live there and started my news and broadcasting career there. They can raise the 500 Million. Again the warning sign's go back to 1995 when the renovations were horrible.

One thing you didn’t mention is the fact the Seattle Pilots (Milwaukee) and Kc Royals weren’t supposed to expand into the league until 1971. The plan was to add 2 NL teams San Diego and Montreal (Washington) …. The Missouri politicians were pissed and went to bat to push up the expansion. This had devastating effects for Seattle bc their city wasn’t ready for them and the team moved after one season. Also with 4 teams in one expansion draft …. It set back each team…. Two of them still have yet to win a World Series…

As someone who lives in Seattle, the domed stadium proposal that failed in KC also was tried here to keep the Pilots from moving following the 1969 season. It was passed but not before the Pilots moved to Milwaukee & became the Brewers for the 1970 season. That domed stadium became the Kingdome & became home not only to the Mariners but also the Seahawks, the first version of the Sounders & even for 7 years in the late 70's & early 80's home of the Sonics.

The domed stadium was approved by Seattle voters in 1968. The Pilots weren't supposed to start until 1971 and it was expected that Sick's Stadium could be expanded and make do until the domed stadium was ready (similar to what happened in Milwaukee for the Braves and KC for the A's). But the A's flight from KC moved the expansion up, the Seattle ownership wasn't ready and the Pilots fled to Milwaukee.

Another fact in A's move to KC. Yankee owners Dan Topping and Del Webb had business relationship with Arnold Johnson and championed Johnson with with othet AL owners to purchase A's. Haha meanwhile Kansas City just a few years later built a baseball only stadium for the new Royals and a football only stadium for the Chiefs. So the guy who listed not wanting to share stadiums moved his team and shared a junk stadium for 50 years. Had he stayed in KC he'd have a brand new baseball only stadium and one of the only baseball only stadiums built between the late 1960s and 1990s. He clearly just hated that city he wasn’t staying no matter what! A KC girl must have dumped him haha

What are the chances that Rob Manford realizes what Fisher is doing? If I were Manford, I would tell him this: "Mr. Fisher, you are purposely deceiving us with this Las Vegas deal. You need to put a team together with some veterans the fans can recognize who can help the younger players. If the team finishes in last place with this current roster, it' s your fault. I will then deny your request for relocation and you will have to stay in Oakland. If you have a problem with that, I suggest you sell the team before 2024, if not sooner." I may not be an As fan, but I care about the team staying in Oakland.

No, you got the Oakland Raiders, to Los Angeles Raiders, to Oakland Raiders again, and now the Las Vegas Raiders, you also have the Los Angeles Rams, the St. Louis Rams, and now the Los Angeles Rams, you also have the Chicago Cardinals, the St. Louis Cardinals, and the Phoenix/Arizona Cardinals, that's 3 NFL franchises that gave moved 3 times. So the A's are not going to be the first major professional sports team to relocate three times, and I haven't even looked at the NBA or NHL. First professional pro baseball team to move three times in franchise history yes, but not the first pro team to do so.
