@@NathanMoist ironically, over the past decade the A's and Rays have had similar attendance. Looking at a map, lets assume that San Francisco/Oakland had the same population that Tampa/St. Petersburg has and lets imagine for a minute that the BART doesn't exist. How many fans are driving from Oakland (and areas to the East of Oakland) to the San Francisco International Airport area 81 times a year to see the A's play if their stadium was in that location? Considering that over the last decade, the A's have played right in the center of their market and averaged 15,464 per game (not counting 2020) I sincerely doubt that they're facing the traffic to drive across the Bay into San Francisco, then all the way to the stadium.

When two off-season's worth of renovations were recently done at Rogers Centre, Rogers paid for the whole thing themselves. Only catch to this situation was that the city and province of Ontario spent approximately $570M in 1986-88 dollars (around $1.2B in today's dollars) to build what was then called SkyDome, then sold it to SportsCo for $31M in 1999. Brodie, There is a major difference between the Tampa Bay Rays & the team formerly known as the Oakland A's. The Oakland A's owner, John Fisher, CHOSE to let this happen by allowing the Oakland Coliseum to become the worst stadium in Major League Baseball & by acting in bad faith when it came to any deal for a new potential ballpark in Oakland. The Tampa Bay Rays find themselves in an unfortunate situation, courtesy of Hurricane Milton. I remember watching a video you made which said that there are scheduling conflicts between the Tampa Bay Rays & the Yankees affiliate in Tampa for 42 of the Rays' 81 home games. I think the Rays should hold only 39 of their 81 home games in Tampa. The Rays should try to reach a deal with the Phillies & the Blue Jays to schedule their remaining home games in the ballparks of their respective spring training/minor league ballparks. If there are still any scheduling conflicts, then the rest can be scheduled in Port Charlotte.

So many things here.... The Rays owner is choosing to back out of the already agreed upon deal with St. Pete to use this unfortunate situation as leverage once again to get out of St. Pete and into Tampa. He was "blessed" by having the hurricane give him a plausible "out" of the contract for a new stadium. St. Pete can smell this and is calling foul on their tactics. St. Pete is so pissed that they are threatening to not even fit the Trop at all. Steinbrenner field is in Tampa. The Rays are saying that it is the closest to MLB standards in the region. They are not wrong. However, if they chose either the Phillies or Blue Jays fields in Dunedin or Clearwater that would have made Pinellas county much happier and shown good faith for all the money they are about to pony up for Trop roof repairs and a new stadium. When the Rays chose Steinbrenner field and Tampa, they took that as a shot to the face. The comments and tone from Pinellas county is clear that they know what the Rays are up to, but nobody can say anything publicly for legal reasons. Everyone with a pulse knows that Tampa (not St. Pete) is a better place for a new stadium, but Tampa adamantly said last year that they will provide no funds for a stadium. All things are not equal now so there is a slight opening for Tampa to figure something out and not at the expense of ruining a relationship with St. Pete. The Rays see is drama and want St. Pete to rid themselves of the Rays which would sort of allow Tampa to jump in. Side note, but Tampa knows they will have to help pay for a Bucs stadium in the coming years, likely $1.5B or more. The Bucs are too important to the community. The Tarpons have already said they are going to play their full season at a side practice field. No conflicts exist anymore. The $15M helped make that decision. Port Charlotte stadium (even though it is owned by the Rays) is too far for the fan base so it's a non-starter. I love love love this situation as it is the most interesting off field drama that has nothing to do with any action of on field activities in recent memory. We are all waiting on baited breath for the Rays deadline for December 1st to see what they are formally required to say in response to the Pinelllas county ultimatum they gave the Rays a few days ago. We'll see the true intentions by Sunday night. The Rays, St. Pete, and Pinellas county still have that signed and agreed upon deal with none of the groups missing any deadlines or breaching contract. However, the recent hurricane situation has allowed a few "outs" so if everyone does nothing and keeps to the contract they all signed then the Rays will stay in St. Pete and a new stadium will eventually be built. But if the Rays formally back out, then I suspect St. Pete will say "screw you" Rays and let them walk and get out of the remaining 3years of the original agreement to play in the Trop for 30 years. This is when Tampa jumps in. We'll see in a few days what's next in this saga....
@RogerBates75 минут бұрын
@ArizonaHotSauce don't forget that prior to Sternberg trying to get out of it, the balance of the Pinellas County board changed, due to the elections. He went from a 5-2 "Yes", to a possible 4-3 "No". They keep delaying the final vote and that's costing the Rays money. I know you know all this, I'm just adding the context for anyone else who may not.

A day of reckoning is coming. You framed the story correctly. For a measly 19 million dollars a year which is not even half the price of a superstar player in today's market, MLB is going to be humiliated. Major league players will take the field in Sacramento, but the product will have the look and feel of minor league baseball. It will be a PR nightmare. Not for Fisher as he is a nightmare unto himself. Major league players and broadcasters will be constantly whining, justifiably so about playing in Sacramento. It is comedy that Sacramento is giving the A's the stadium rent free. I guess they are thinking it will be good PR. I guess it will be good for local businesses, but I seriously doubt it will help them get a MLB franchise. The Tampa situation will not be good either but as you pointed out it came about through an act of God. I enjoyed the past regular season, but the playoff system stinks. But this time around the Dodgers probably were the best team, at least they were the best team money could buy.

The Guardians have rain delays all the time. It's just part of baseball when not in California, or a dome
@JeffreyW6710 сағат бұрын
There is a difference between a rain delay and a rain suspension. (or snow.) I doubt the Guardians have had 6.5 games in any season where the game had to be played on a different day. Either as a double header; on an off-day; or worst case, at the park of the other team. Baseball teams will often move start times if the know the bad weather is coming or will endure three-hour rain delays. That is one thing, but cancelling that many games in MLB does not happen with that amount of frequency.
@michaelmarkowski2046 сағат бұрын
Bruiser Brodie was talking about rainouts, not rain delays. Guardians had 4 rainouts in 2024: April 12 vs. Yankees. June 5 vs. Royals. August 6 vs. Arizona. September 29 vs. Astros. Tigers had 3 rainouts: April 11 vs. Twins. April 29 vs. Cardinals. May 28 vs. Pirates.

2:34 Funny thing is, despite the newer American League having a approximately 48-44 edge in All-Star Games, and a whopping 72-48 in the World Series (thanks to the Yankees of course), throughout MLB history, it's usually the American League teams that have the stadium and attendance issues most of the time. Somewhat similar in football as the newer AFC/AFL holds a 26-23 edge in conference Pro Bowls, but, it's currently a 29-29 tie in Super Bowls (the AFC's drought from the mid-1980's to late 1990's had something to do with that). And yes, it's usually the AFC teams that have the stadium and attendance issue problems.

@RogerBates723 минут бұрын
I have to disagree a little bit with Brodie here, I feel like there are more differences than similarities in these two situations. Having cities that don't want to pay for Stadiums is similar and the ability of the teams to generate revenue are also comparable, but beyond that there are many differences. First of all, Fisher walked away from Oakland with a viable option to play in a major league park (albeit a dump), the Rays were driven out by a natural disaster and a governmental decision to cut the insurance before said disaster. Another difference, Oakland has a fanbase. The Rays, less so. Yes, Oakland fans didn't turn out, but that's a lot to do with crappy ownership and governmental incompetence that they didn't cause. Rays fans are loyal, but they're few. That team never sold out the building with any frequency. Also, Sternberg is a good owner. He puts a winning product on the field most years, despite a crap Stadium and half a fanbase. Fisher is a poor owner who pockets TV & revenue sharing money and puts a AAA team on the field.
@jaredwalton313510 сағат бұрын
Nice analysis. The Ray's have had one continuous obstacle to their stadium problems: Vince Naimoli the original owner of the team signed a very strict 25 year lease with the city of St.Pete. it's been a major Roadblock towards progress of getting a new stadium built for decades now. It was going to expire in 2027, but with the lost year and the terms of the lease, the city can enforce an extension. I'm betting the Ray's and St. Pete end up in court. I totally agree that there should have been more flexibility on the Ray's part, instead of throwing a tantrum with a city and county reeling from back to back Hurricanes and the rebuild necessitated by that. But, I do think, the tantrum and killing the deal is the Plan B. St. Pete has been a notoriously difficult partner for decades, primarily because of the lease. The Ray's have been notoriously cheap, despite putting a very good product on the field consistently for years now.
@michaelmarkowski2044 сағат бұрын
I wonder why another team with much more willingness to spend money doesn't hire the Rays' player management and some scouting staff? They almost always contend for a playoff spot in spite of losing almost every one of their top players to free agency? They would then have the opportunity to sign either their own free agents or those of other teams to win a World Series. Maybe they like living in the area and don't want to move?

I've lived here in the Tampa/St. Pete area for a bit but as a Tiger fan I really haven't taken more than a passing interest in the Rays. Because I don't have a dog in the hunt I haven't followed the stadium saga that closely over the years. I seem to recall the team almost reaching a deal to build a stadium in Ybor City but it fell through for whatever reason. Maybe someone can refresh me on that. I know the area they currently play in sucks and I thought building a new stadium in the same area was a bad idea. I assumed they agreed because they didn't think an agreement with Tampa would be forthcoming. Steinbrenner Field is a nice little park. Great customer service, but at that price...I'd pass. The best thing for the team would be to relocate. I think that is what will end up happening but we'll see.

The Orphan A's suffer from self-inflicted wounds, whereas Tampa - aside from the bickering with Pinellas County - have been victims of force majeur. However, all of this is the culmination of at least three decades of bungling by impotent MLB governance, and highly immature - well, everybody. Now we have reached the point of such disparity and lack of competition in Baseball that TV and streaming audiences will continue to wane, revenues will shrink, and fans of the "other" 20 to 24 teams will give up and walk away. MLB has destroyed itself. And don't be fooled by these "wow" numbers from 2024 (which really aren't that "wow" from a historical perspective). After the RSN shakeout and national contracts get renegotiated on new in-season viewership numbers, there will be panic among all of the MLB owners - including the ones now making it rain for these superstar players...Reality awaits you MLB...

I don't think the Rays sent a hurricane to destroy their stadium and wanted to move out that fast. A's could have stayed in Oakland until the move to Vegas, Tampa had no choice. Now on the St. Pete side, I can understand that clean up needs to come first, but them pulling out the "if you play in Hillsborough we're delaying your new stadium" is garbage. I would say it's not worth fixing the roof, just start the new stadium and get put the roof money into the new stadium
@tombraiderstrums099 сағат бұрын
All the similarities between the two clubs are also similarities with the AZ Coyotes, as you brought up. And look how that turned out. It’s not a great look for MLB to be trying to rush into expansion when one team from the last expansion (Rays) is definitely on the ropes in their home city and the other one (Diamondbacks) has gathering storm clouds over their stadium situation. As an AZ sports fan I would be devastated to lose both the Coyotes and the Diamondbacks. These careless, ham-fisted, intractable owners are driving sports leagues into the ground. Sucks
@ki27265 сағат бұрын
Who cares sports teams don’t help a states economy like some would think. Fans and people should never bend over backwards for billionaire owners and their greed. Either you can afford your team as an owner or sell it to someone who can. It’s really that simple.
@tomk.34286 сағат бұрын
Make a statement to all of the owners. Suspend the franchises until they have a major league caliber stadium to play in. If the A’s don’t want the Oakland deal until their new home is built (or not), then they should sit. If the Rays owner is unwilling to work with the city to put the roof on the trope, then they should sit. No reason they can’t share the cost of the roof repair with the city and work out the deal later. If they started re-roofing now, would they have one 5 months from now?
@Michael-sb8jf3 сағат бұрын
Even if they got the ball rolling on repairing the roof in Tampa the day after it the storm (ordering paths etc) Tropicana field wouldn't be ready till next season. The parts needed to replace the roof are customed ordered and with waiting lists and manufacturing it then building it the Ray's still need a temp home. The underlying problem is no one wants to actually do it and for good reason. Why waste millions of dollars when you are supposed to get a new stadium within the next 5-8 years?

Both situations are a black eye to MLB. This wouldn't happen in the NFL or the NBA... Imagine if an NFL team was asked to play their home games at a college football stadium or a UFL stadium temporarily for a few years or if an NBA team was asked to play at a college basketball gym/arena or a G-League team arena temporarily for a few years. They would be the joke of their league. Yeah, the Chargers played at that soccer stadium temporarily and that was kind of dumb, but still, not as bad as the A's and Rays stadium situations. But yeah, it's crazy how the stadium situations for both the A's and the Rays continue to be a problem and probably won't be resolved to possibly the end of this decade.

Utah literally has the means to get a team right now. If either of them don't pan out, expect a relocation to SLC and likely sale to the Larry H Miller group. My money is on the Rays leaving. It is insane for the MLB to even think about expansion. In reality, they need to be looking at contraction. Also, Vegas is a terrible location to move a franchise to. You are denying the team a true home market. You aren't filling a stadium with locals there to root for their local team. It is a bunch of tourists there to catch a game and possibly root for the other team. Who would want to play a 162 game schedule where you never got to come home to a truly friendly fan base?
