Thank you so much for your videos and the community you’ve brought together, it’s nice to not feel alone. I’m a year and 4 months out from a fibula fracture. I had surgery with a plate and 12 screws and have accepted this is my NEW normal. Yes it can be disheartening but to know I can walk/ run again after all the trauma and losing your independence, makes one realize we can overcome intense struggles. I get sad bc there’s a lot of things I probably won’t ever try due to the fear of breaking it again but I guess I’m just more cautious now.

I had a trimalleolar ankle break a few years back. Broke both sides of the Tibia at the ankle tore the inside ligament. Surgery once. No mandatory therapy actually, did it myself. Had the hardware out and everything finished fine. They say you'll never feel normal and things still feel a little different but not much. Everything came back including full balance and range for martial arts. Have faith..you never know.

@@jovanyponce1162 I had a screw canoe, screw plate and 9 screws inserted at my surgery. One of those screws was long across the syndesmosis. I researched having everything out vs in. Didn't have much pain with it in but they wanted to take the longer screw out for range of motion so while they were doing it I just had everything go. The recovery for that was quite short. The final come back at the end was more convincing myself it was back. Your body changed so the chance of things being different from there on is large but honestly I trained myself again, worked to restore balance between my legs. The effort I put in wasn't large despite my training. Two years on since the fun and most everything is fine. Like I said keep the faith.

I'm almost 4 years out from my trimalleolar break. It was a bad one. 2 plates, 16 screws. Got a bone infection the same week I was cleared to put weight on it. That was a whole different battle, but luckily it was caught early and didn't kill any bone. Currently the outer plate is pushing it's way out. I've got 3 broken screws and an open wound in the original incision where you can actually see a screw head. I'm currently waiting for removal of hardware Nov 7th after back to back MRSA infections. I've been going to wound care weekly for around 3 months now. The lack of healing after several visits is what got me referred for complete removal. I'm going to an orthopedic trauma surgeon this time that specializes in ankles. This has been a complete nightmare. I've lost everything financially and just want my life back so I can go back to work and just be normal again. Over these 4 years I've developed arthritis in the ankle joint, but I can deal with that, I just want to be able to move my for again. Btw, I'm 49 year old male.

Thank you for your dedication to doing these videos, Mihal, even many years out! Hearing others’ stories helps so much during the early stages of uncertainty, and your updates do bring a sense of comfort. I know without a doubt my ankle will never be “normal” ( 5 months out, trimalleolar break, plate & 10 screws) but I am settling into a feeling of “new normal,” and this week I have noticed actual moments that I DON’T think about my ankle. This is progress. PT has been good for me and I hope to get back into yoga when I can bend a little more!

Hi. My friend is an ex nurse and does not agree with ice. I never put ice on my broken ankle. I just used Plantain herb oil I made myself. Easy to make. You can make it. It took the swelling down in 2-3 days after breaking my ankle. It's a great natural pain relief plant too. I also drink Plantain herb water. Maybe best to consult with a Herbalist, especially if you take meds. Comfrey herb oil is great also.😊 I was massaging my foot daily and stopped. Now I am getting a bit of numbness. But I am sure the Plantain oil will fix that once I start my daily routine again. Just sharing my story. 😊

I am post op 11 weeks I had a trimalleolar ankle fracture. I was so eager to get back to walking, i was told to start walking with a boot 7 weeks with crutches, not full weight bearing. I know i shouldn't have but on the first day i was so eager i slowly tried to walk without the crutches with the boot. After doing it, i could walk full weight bearing in the Boot, no crutches without any pain! (Keep in mind my doctor said crutches and boot) I was so confident around 5 days before my doctors appointment i walked around my house barefoot! Not all day though. I still had no pain, unless i started to do stuff I didn't have to with my legs or unnecessary exercises. My doctor said my xrays were great, i informed him of my doings against his words, he told me to keep doing whatever i was doing before because i was doing better than expected. Surprisingly he told me if i felt like i could, i coild probably start jogging in a few weeks (around the present right now) i stumbled upon your videos on your journey the same day of the doctor! I have to say your channel helped me through this rough time! What you did and the motivation of seeing you! Upon 11 weeks now, i can jog at a very slow pase, a few times a day. I have a doctor checkup in 4 more weeks! The only trouble i have is my foot arch, i would say a lot of pain but if i raise it too high it starts to burn, if i lower it too low again starts to burn. My balance is deficient however good enough. Another fun fact, through this journey i found out that i have a condition where my body produces extra calcium, my doctors say this might be the reason for my fast growth but not best thing. Now my body needs the calcium to repair my bones. But when my bones fully heal my body will start to feel fatigued from the mass production of extra calcium. Although im just here to say thank you! For everything youve marked on your jouney helping me! If i have any big news on my 4 week check-in. I will be sure to edit my comment!

Hi Mihal, thanks for all your helpful videos on this topic. I broke mine in mid July -- a bimalleolar fracture of left ankle. The doc decided on a conservative approach, so no surgery, only a boot for 8 weeks. After that, I had about 8 weeks of phys therapy. And while I have little pain, I'm a bit disappointed that I still have a limited range of dorsiflexion range and a noticeable limp. So, I don't know how to correct those problems at this point. I have a follow-up appt with my doc in about a month to discuss this, so we'll see. In the meantime, a new wrinkle has emerged: I'm now getting a clicking/rubbing sensation in the ankle that occurs with every step I take. After a little online research, it seems to be what they call peroneal tendon subluxation, where a tendon is rubbing across the outside ankle area. It's not painful (yet), but is obviously concerning to feel that clicking feeling whenever I walk. I'm assuming that the tendon was damaged when I rolled my ankle in July. I just hope it doesn't require surgery and more time in a boot. I'd like to hear from you or others who may know anything about this condition. Thanks again for your very helpful videos. I don't feel so alone in this struggle.
@brokenankleclub
@brokenankleclub 2 жыл бұрын
Hey Steve, ugh what a bummer. I don't know anything about this condition, but if I were you I'd go on a marathon PT search until finding a badass therapist who knows what it is, how to deal with it, and how to help you get your dorsiflexion and strength back. The surgeon can't really help with that. That's my two cents.

I am 15 years past a trimallelolar ankle fracture that occurred in highschool at the age of 17. I had the screws and hardware inside the ankle removed around the 6 year mark. I stayed active and continued to run, skateboard and play sports until around the 8-10 year mark when I began having significant inflammation, pain and swelling after hiking or spending more than an hour on my feet. I had surgery to clean out the joint and have had cortisone injections to manage pain. I have developed post traumatic arthritis in the joint with significant lessening of the cartilage space. I now wear an exo sym carbon fiber brace and plan on an artificial joint after trying ankle distraction. I’m the worst case scenario- post traumatic ankle arthritis. It emerged for me around the 10 year mark.

I flexed my ankle when I had my plaster cast on, after surgery and when swelling went down I could flex my ankle very well. I was given a boot after my plaster cast was removed but found it easier to walk without one. I walked quickly, climbed stairs and am making good progress with lots of exercising. Not as swollen now, and doesn’t swell as much after walking but is still sore at times, and I can limp if I overdo it. I had my plaster removed on Feb 16th 2024, I have physio every two weeks, with exercises to undertake daily. I’m 72 and determined to walk a distance. I’m limited for distance, and walking around the supermarket requires time to rest after. I hope this gives you all the possibility that you can and will walk, but exercise as much as possible did help me,

@@Ganja143-m1h I can if I force it gently down, but it hurts when I do that. I can't stand with my two feet on the same level, my injured foot has to be slighty in front of my good foot because of the tightness in my heel

I was never a runner - but you shouldn't be limping. If you're limping, you're pushing yourself too fast!

@@robs1714 feel you bro. 6 months in too. Used to play football a lot and tennis (i broke my ankle playing football, falling on myself, im 18 by the way)i had bimalleolar fracture. Im a super active boy, now i can run but if my ankle is on a bad day i limp a bit and it hurts. My strenght and balance is almost 100% now, at least this was out of the test i had after 4 months and a half of fisioterapy. But dorsiflexion is still a big problem (more or less 9 cm of difference in dorsiflexion). And furthermore is still a bit swollen in certain points, plus after i do play sports like tennis and i rest, when i get up is usually stiffer. I don't know if it will be ever normal again but man i will do everything for getting it back to normal.

Me too! It happened the first days of December and I had surgery two weeks ago. I’m still on a cast and tomorrow I’m getting stitches out and a boot. I use a knee scooter to move around the house, I have 4 kids two teens and two younger ones, I’ve been spoiled by my husband all these days but he is going back to work next week so I’m trying to do more things on my own. I feel a little discouraged thinking I may not be able to get back to what I used to be, but I’m very happy I found your channel!

I would suggest keep up doing exercises. It’s key to walking. I’m 72;and walk after a few days of the plaster coming off. I do exercises all the time. Walk upstairs and down, walk around the supermarket, sometimes with a crutch just to take weight off my foot. I have plate and two sets of screws but I’m determined to walk. More exercising equals less painful foot. It will swell, but I elevate when swollen. I don’t take pain killers, but did at first when pot removed. I don’t wear a boot just normal trainers.
