My first real challenge came at 59 with a cancer diagnosis. Terrifying, earth shaking. It's been 2 years of confusion and feeling sorry for myself and I just decided f#$k it and now try to be a positive force on this earth. His statement of the peace you get from family and a life lived well is so true. Also without the stress relief and peace I find on my trail bike I would go crazy! Great little video.

Great attitude and observations on life. I'm 66 and I love riding and bike camping as well. Recently I had an appendectomy which stopped my riding for several weeks. I wondered how long the recovery would take. The wait can really get you down. Your recovery was obviously much longer! Kudos to you for getting back out there on the bike. It does return the joy to ones life.

Such a mellow short piece. Just what I needed to relevate my condition and my frustrations. Injured my leg and my cycling season is over... But this pain too will pass.. hopefully .

I have a broken Ti cargo rack that I just had welded so I can get through my bike trip at the end of May on the High Plains Byway. Broken stuff sucks, but at least I wasn't hurt! Respect! A lot of the feelings he had about being grateful for what you had and wanting to get back to normal were similar to the ones I had after getting hit by a Jeep in January of 2022. I was lucky and it was only a few months before I was nearly as good as new. All I could think about during that time was getting back on a bike.

Well, I am 79, and I am planning to do the Tree to Sea this year. I rode the trails on the Southern half of Vancouver Island before Covid and have done the full Kettle Valley Rail trail in southern BC. Before that, I was a Randonneur for 30 years, so know what I could do once. But I was much younger then. I was run down by cars five times, so have some leftover injuries. But I should be OK. Bears, cougars and samsquances worry me the most, but I'll take them over car drivers!

I think, though, that you could interpret this story in a hundred different ways, none of them involving divine intervention. My story on recovering from cancer involves no gods but the rational hand of the surgeon. If it weren't for him I wouldn't be doing a whole lot of bike packing right now.
