There's a few options. Remove old fractured/cracked cap; manufacture a new billet one with the cam center machined in the right spot? (ie. based on measurements from your existing cap). Could slightly beef up the existing design as well... Sure, this won't be a cheap fix, but it's a heck of a lot cheaper than replacing a head. I'd actually be very surprised if there wasn't a known "range" of cam centers, based on manufacturing tolerance, that you could design around this (ie. model A; B; C; D depending on the cam cap used). Alternatively, you could probably design the above with a generic billet cap with increased tolerance around the cam; then provide a set of half-moon bearing shells (ie. A, B, C, D, E, F), which provide an offset cam center depending on the one that is installed (ie. the shells aren't uniform/concentric).

A lot of people saying this is mainly caused by bolt fatigue there’s actually an updated cam cap bolt apparently… would you recommend using new bolts and torquing to spec?

That's not true. The valve conver doesn't suck bad like you said. We don't see barely any valve cover issue at all all over the world.

from what I have seen, it shows itself as a misfire. But, a misfire can be so many things. I would guess you start or end at the cam caps.

Has anyone tried to tap the block and use a longer bolt on the shallow side?

It’s not possible because there’s no room for it. It’s directly between the 2 oil holes so it would basically make it one big hole.

Yes, it is the same cam cap. And the Gen 1 is actually how I learned about it.

@@headgames not at all. The car had missfire and after checking everything the last was to check the head. We checked the head and the cambridge was broken was really easy to see. Now my question, can the cam cap failure damage the engine or do you think i should be fine after replacing the head?

Is this an issue for the everyday guy? Like, if I never modded the engine in a 2020 X3M, would I care about this issue? Or maybe the better question is, how does this present when it fails? Finally, is this a recall issue or no?

Buy a new one, or if you can get a junk head that has good cam caps we can hone it.

@@headgames Hi, I'm having this problem, I have a junk head from a 2022 B58, can we use the caps from this one? Since they've already updated it here, I don't know if the lubrication lines match!! I would like to know since I was thinking of sending it to you but maybe I bought the wrong junk head! Regards

IDK. Maybe, but it seems like the mousetrap things pull on the cam cap and break it because it is not secured.

Ohhh! So all the people who have the issue and this head issue doesn’t exist? Makes sense we would break a cam cap for the $100 video.

@@headgames lol exactly and bmw redesigned the head and cap with the extra long bolt just for fun, all though bmw did drop the ball considering the distance of the fasteners to the head.
