For anyone wondering why I was holding the wrench so awkwardly, I was holding it that way to reduce the chance of the stud snapping again. I know it’s awkward looking but in my head there was a method. Whether necessary or not, I’m just glad we got it out lol.

Tony should have had you apply plenty of anti spatter gel on the manifold gasket surface before welding. Maybe not absolutely necessary but sometimes it can prevent some grief and extra work. I learned that the hard way when making my first Lincoln locker.

It is better to use brass sheeting or just a brass washer under the nut. The brass is usually thicker and stronger. Then the weld will never stick to brass. Enjoy.

The best thing that ever came to welding was an auto darkening helmet. I grew up using a flip screen helmet and trust me the auto darkening helmets make welding Soo much easier. Btw argon makes the surrounding area so much cleaner than that flux core wire. Much less slag to clean up.
@DougsterWolverineGarage2 жыл бұрын
I was on a road job and someone had taken my helmet off my truck and I needed to weld something. The guy at the jobsite said "I have a helmet you can use" and went into a shed and brought out a helmet. I swear was made in the '50s it had the small welding glass in it. I strapped it on my noggin and got ready to weld and tipped my head to let the helmet down and the bottom edge slammed right into my throat (it wasnt intended to be used like that the glass itself was on a hinge) that hurt like all hell! Thank god I was working alone!

@@DougsterWolverineGarage life today can be so much easier it just takes a little bit of intuition to research. Almost everything has been made to be easier. I understand automotive and sometimes there are EFI troubles that are just ridiculous at the end of diagnostics but there is always the light at the end of the tunnel. The thing about the flux core instead of a mig is UT's whole concept of this channel which is that any Joe blow can do this stuff in his driveway even if all he can afford is a $100 harbor freight welder. That's what makes this the perfect content for young fellas like the junkyard jet gang or anyone without a ton of experience. When I was a kid my buddy and I boogered up a cracked go cart frame with a battery jumper cables and some hardware store welding rod.
@breckfoster7672 жыл бұрын
the reason alot of old timers don't use auto darkening helmets is because for the tiny split second the helmet isn't activated and the ark is struck your burning your eyes. No matter how much you turn down the sensitivity in the helmet it will never respond as fast as an old diver helmet.
@clembob80042 жыл бұрын
@@breckfoster767 I stopped using the auto darkening helmet because it stopped working correctly. It will go dark at first and then go back to light and cause a lot of welding flash. I tried everything. I changed the sensitivity, let it sit out in the sun to recharge the solar battery, etc, etc. Finally I just had enough and broke out the good old flip down lens and life is good.

I’ve seen entire castings ruined because of what took place after an easy out was broken or a thread chasing tap. One man broke a water pump bolt off in his engine. Then went after the broken bolt with a right angle drill. He through he had drill through the broken bolt so he used an easy out to try and remove the remaining bolt. After he broke the east out off inside the bolt he decided that it was time to take the engine to my machine shop. I became alarmed when I noticed antifreeze in places in shouldn’t have been. I asked the customer if there wa oil antifreeze in the oil when he drained the engine. He stated none. What he had done was drill sideways through both the bolt be the casting managing to drill into the front timing chain area, then into a water jacket behind that. Ford 400M engine. Ruined. If I hadn’t pulled that front cover off that engine and just sat it up in my milling machine and cut that easy out with my carbide end mills I would have likely been forced to eat that. The guy had to have known beforehand. I made sure and found the problem right in front of the man. He acted too busy to be there.

I hate to sound like a Karren but you guys should use at least some welding gloves to reduce the UV exposure on yourselves..Granted i often just grab the welder and go but we should be a little more concerned about reducing the chances of future skin cancer. "Welding arcs and flames emit intense visible, ultraviolet, and infrared radiation. UV radiation in a welding arc will burn unprotected skin just like UV radiation in sunlight. This hazard is true for direct exposure to UV radiation as well as radiation that is reflected from metal surfaces, walls, and ceilings."

Dude,you peen it while it's cooling. The "sonic" of tapping it with a hammer helps break the rust loose. ours is always broke off in the hole, use a high tinsle stick and stick welding rig. Use a rod and center the stick on the broken stud and weld a tit peening between wells so it doesn't stick to the cast iron, if you break off an easy out or just the stud, the heat from the weld breaks the rust loose,and we always use flat jaw vise grips, those round jaw ones don't work. You heating it to the "Non-magnetic" point, you di ut right the weld will only stick to the broke off stud. I never weld a boltf on there I flat jaw vise grip the stud

Working for a race engine shop I won't name due to hard feelings I did learn a trick there about this same thing. First on a broken stud, heat the stud itself to cherry red & then son then quirt a 'small' stream of water on the stud.
