If my compression release is not broken, will worn lobes on cam cause me to have to adjust the valves every time before mowing.

always go OEM when it comes to internal engine parts, contact your local Authorized Briggs & Stratton dealer, some dealers will not sell ' Service Only ' parts, which was certain parts reserved for shop use by professionals, like myself, at my shop I will not sell a service only part, but it's at the shop's discretion :)

I replaced the cam shaft, all assembled properly. The engine will not spin with spark plug installed, but when spark plug removed, engine spins over...of course does not start with spark plug out. What am I dealing with, please? Thanks Ron

this is how i troubleshoot hard crank overs. its not always the cam. 1. remove and bench test starter (hook your red lead off the battery charger to the starter and touch the black ground to the bottom of starter) if the starter runs smooth and does not get hot for 30 seconds, it passes. 2. check and adjust your valves to the correct lash. i set all Briggs between 4 and 6 thousandths. 3. ACR (automatic compression release) on the camshaft, sometimes the spring is not strong enough and won't work properly, or as usual they break off. when you replace the cam ALWAYS check your valves and reset them to the proper clearances/lash!

Thanks, that's more than enough i wanted to know. I have Briggs v twin 24hp that is very hard to start, when i turn the engine round by hand it will make weird saxophone noise, is this faulty decompression?
@TheOutdoorPowerGuy6 ай бұрын
@@martink4719 Depending on your year model engine there could be a multitude of different problems ranging from a cylinder issue or to something as simple as a bad carburetor or a valve problem, the lobes on the cam could be worn, i have seen that happen as well, the noise you hear might be normal as some Briggs engines do make a noise like that when cranking over, i've never seen a ACR (automatic compression release) fail on a V-twin briggs and some don't even have it. my best advice would be to contact your nearest Briggs & Stratton dealer, they are certified in-order to be an authorized dealer :)

Professional use factory gasket and not gasket sealer always replace seals and gaskets saves from a come back that’s on your fine due to poor workman’s ship this is a good video as far as the procedure and fix but not the assembly
@TheOutdoorPowerGuy Жыл бұрын
You are incorrect, Briggs & Stratton no longer uses gaskets on the valve covers after 2010, the service manual states to use an RTV (gasket sealer/maker etc..) sealant that is oil resistant. Kohler engines never use gaskets on the valve covers and oil pans, Briggs is the same now, no gaskets on the oil pans, RTV. i have used RTV for over 20 years with no problems.

You said 20 inch lbs on bolts, should be 20 foot lbs.

200 in lbs equals 20 ft lbs.

@@TheOutdoorPowerGuy 240 inch pounds = 20 foot pounds. You left the pin from the broken compression release in the engine. It's near the bottom tappet.

Leaving the broken compression release is akin to someone knocking on your back door; NOT GOOD!!! 🤣😂😅

Not that difficult. J7st need to be familiar with parts and function.
