Hi, how often and how much water do you water your bromeliad "tanks"?
@NailzByA Жыл бұрын
I check them on a weekly basis and normally they’ll need water. I wouldn’t recommend watering the medium this often especially if it’s still wet at the point you’d refill the tank but if the tank is low or empty I refill it. I found in my experience with this plant that it also doesn’t hurt it if it goes a few days empty but I wouldn’t let it go more than a few days without water in the tank. Caring for this plant like this has seemed to keep them happy and healthy for me so I hope this helps! Thanks for watching!

How did you water the pups, from top cups or bottom? I'm potting a few pups using self-watering pots but some You Tubers say to water from the top while others say water from bottom using the wicks. Very helpful videos, Thanks
@NailzByA2 ай бұрын
I think either is fine honestly. I had one in leca so kept a water reservoir at the bottom and the other in the orchid bark mix I water in the top cup and every once in a while would give the medium a little moisture. Hope this helps!

Hi, thanks for the reply. I have a total of four pups - two of them I planted in self-watering pots (the kind with the wick at the bottom}, and the other two I planted in regular pots using orchid bark. I'd just started using leca for Monstera and Fiddle Leaf Fig cuttings, so far they look good. The only thing is I have an East/West facing house with windows that are not big enough to let a lot of sun in (Florida hurricane windows). I recently started using grow lights but it's a work in progress with those, constantly moving things around. Anyway, thanks for your help!

I'm a relative newbie to houseplants too, and although not so much a flower person, the bromeliad I can tolerate. In my one bedroom apt, so far and counting, I have 16 plants, ranging from two Majesty palms, to two species of snake plants, heart shaped philodendron, viagated pothos and garland ivy(both being grown vertically), Sago palm(a very ancient plant with a great look!), wandering jew with a new cutting in water, a variagated corn plant and a pup from a dying solid green corn plant, a sheffelera that's almost 3 feet tall, a dieffenbachia, birds nest fern, aloe, and a split leaf philodenren with the really big leaves, which at one point was down to just one leaf, but now has eight leaves. I use what's now called "Jack's plant food", which was for years called Peter's plant food. Really GREAT stuff! Had to buy the palm blend for the palms though since they have different requirements than most other houseplants. Most are doing so well that I'm giving away new plants, so good luck to you! At 16 plants, I'm not done yet. I kinda got the bug for the look, the cleaner air inside with the feeling that you're outside, and the elegance and tropical feel that most of them bring to a small space, especially the palms and bromeliad! I thought I was leaving something out, and I was. I also have a great looking Peace Lily that keeps blooming, a braided money tree, and a cane Yucca. Most are more healthy than when I bought them from so called "nurseries" or big box stores. Go figure. And yes, I "talk" to my plants, more giving them carbon dioxide than anything, and they seem to like music. I'm a newbie, but learning a lot as I go, and from what I learned from my grandmother, and her rule of green thumb, was to not pay too much attention to the plants. They'll tell you in their own way what they need, or don't. Again, good luck to you as a fellow newbie. : ) The Earth NEEDS more greenery...indoors and/or out!!

I just propagated 5 pups for the first time. How do I make sure to keep the orchid mix moist enough
@NailzByA Жыл бұрын
At this stage I would keep the bark misted for roots to form but I also put a little water in the center which is referred to as the “cup” normally on a mature plant I fill not the very center but the reservoirs formed by the leaves surrounding the center but until it gets a bit bigger that is how I care for my pups and have had much success.

My bromelaid gave me 2 pups almost 7 months ago and I replanted but one of the pups is turning brown in the center now! What should I do?
@NailzByA2 жыл бұрын
Oh no that’s not a good sign! If it’s browning at the center you may not be able to save it cause that’s the “base of the plant” that would be like the main stem that connects everything. You may have removed the pup before it was stable enough to support itself or may not have given it correct conditions but hearing you had your mother Bromeliad long enough to produce pups I’d think that’s prop not the case and you know the care so I’d say it either wasn’t ready or just like any plant we propagate they don’t all always make it and it’s just a fluke. I would def keep it till it’s clearly no longer with us lol and just make sure it always has clean water in the cup and make sure it’s not getting too much light. What medium did you plant the pup in?

@NailzByA2 жыл бұрын
So the one in orchid bark was in a room full of windows and the one in leca was in my kitchen pulled at least 6 ft back from a north facing window. With that being said obviously the one in orchid bark grew faster and grew more since it had better light. Probably after about 6 months I moved the leca one to the same spot as the other one and it still grew and still is growing a lot slower. Idk if that’s cause it didn’t get the same early on beneficial growing conditions or if it’s the medium but the one in orchid bark grew bigger and faster. Hope this helps. Mine only produced 1 pup but also never properly flowered. The uppermost leaves went a lovely red colour for a while and then started to dry up and brown, shall I just remove the pup but leave the main plant for a while longer?
@NailzByA2 жыл бұрын
In most cases Bromeliads will only flower once in their life time and again usually unless you grow one from a pup by the time we get them they are already done flowering so those leaves that turn colors aren’t the flowers they are the just the new leaves coming in so beautifully! If the pup is ready yes definitely remove it a good rule of thumb is for the pup to be at least 1/3 the size of the mother plant for best success rate and I always keep the mother plant till it dies off cause it could produce more pups! It will continue to brown once it’s done producing pups though so if that happens no worries it’s not you it’s her lol thanks for watching!

My bromeliad's color is super faded and brown but my pups are not nearly a third of the plant. Idk what to do!!!
@NailzByA7 ай бұрын
Are the green leaves faded or just the colored ones? If the bottom leaves are still nice and green but the colored leaves at the top are fading that is normal and the pups should continue to grow just fine. As long as the plants still healthy and pups are still growing just care for it as normal. If you see the main plant is starting to die I’d recommend removing the pups and trying to root them otherwise they’ll die right along with the mother plant! Hope this helps!

Love that your daughter is taking it all in and helping x
@NailzByA3 жыл бұрын
That’s awesome! Yes as long as it’s “big enough” at least 1/3 the size of the mother plant than its mature enough to be split. You can also repot the mother plant to if you’d like. Aside from improper care the mother plant will only die off when it’s done putting out all the pups it’s going to put off! Good luck and thank you! I love she’s interested in plants already!

I’ve had my bromeliad for a little over a year now And the only thing that’s happened was that it got taller and lost its pink color. It never grew the colored part in the middle but I have a pup growing??
@NailzByA2 жыл бұрын
If it’s growing pups chances are it’s already flowered and now it’s producing the pups to carry on its legacy! Bromeliads normally only flower once in their lifetime and by the time we get them it’s usually happened already and they are just putting out leaves getting ready to grow their pups. Once it’s done producing pups it will start to die off and that’s normal. I keep it till it’s literally all the way dead so I know no more pups are coming and you can remove the pups as early as once they reach 1/3 the size of the plant or you can leave them a little longer. Right now I have 2 pups that I removed and planted here and then a big mother plant with a bunch of pups and for now since I already have 3 I’m just leaving the pups and it makes the plant look super full! I hope this info was helpful! I haven’t had my pups bloom yet but fingers crossed I’ll definitely make a video on this when it happens! Thanks for watching!

Thank you for making this video! I bought one bromeliad and got another for a gift and was pretty sad when they lost their colors! I think I have one pup! Better than none. It looks big enough to remove so I'll have to get some Orchid bark so I can plant it 😊 The other plant doesn't seem to have any. I feel like it should by now. I'll give it a little more time and check again.

But how did you separate the pup?
@NailzByA Жыл бұрын
When they are ready you can pull them right off the mother plant, like your breaking off a corn on the cob, and they should come very effortlessly. You can also cut them off just be sure to cut where you won’t damage the pup. Hope this helps. Thanks for watching!

For the hydro pup, what are those balls called that you planted the pup in?? Lol

Lol leca! And it has grown great in the semi hydro. I keep water in the reservoir and also in the cup of the bromeliad as you would normally.

I just got my first bromeliad and it had a pup that I thought was big enough to remove and replant (it was as tall as the mother). I broke it off and it didn’t come with roots like your’s. Should I be worried about it surviving? I did replant the pup in the hopes of it surviving. I’m super sad I might have messed up. :/
@NailzByA3 жыл бұрын
That’s so exciting! No no worries. As long as the pup is big enough mature enough, which by the sounds of it yours was, it should be just fine. Bromeliads are epiphytes so they prefer a super airy chunky mix, I recommend pure orchid bark. Just be sure to keep the cup full of water and every once in a while when I fill the cup I allow it to over flow into the orchid bark for a few seconds to help promote roots and keep them healthy and absorbing some water! I hope this helps and I hope your Bromeliad pup grows nice and strong!

Are the pups the color of the mother plant?
@NailzByA3 жыл бұрын
Yes the pups are exact clones of the mother plants. Once the bromeliad reaches maturity it will stop producing leaves, flower and then produce the offshoots that will look just like the mother plant. Thanks for watching.

What happens if you don’t remove the pup ?
@NailzByA2 жыл бұрын
It will keep growing on the mother plant I don’t think it’s a bad thing to leave it but I do know once the mother plant is done producing pups it’s nearing the end of its lifespan and it will start to fade in color and eventually dye. I don’t know how long this cycle takes but I would think leaving the pups would speed it up since they are still absorbing nutrients and sugars and what not from the mother plant. Hope this helped. Thanks for watching!

how did the one in leca do?
@NailzByA4 жыл бұрын
It’s doing great I think the one in the orchid bark is growing a little faster but that one also has brighter light the one in leca get pretty low light at the moment but it’s still growing and looks very healthy!

@@NailzByA awesome thank you :) I got two little bromeliad pups from a friend and have never cared for them before, so was a bit wary. But I think it'll be good for them to have the humidity from below! I'm guessing you're doing the reservoir method for the leca instead of the shower method?
@NailzByA4 жыл бұрын
Yes I do the reservoir. I would definitely recommend keeping it on bright indirect light it should should do great! I’ll be moving mine closer to the light once spring hits that’s for sure!

You aren't suppressed to water in the cup of the plant. Especially if you are keeping it indoors.
@NailzByA2 жыл бұрын
I’ve had Bromeliads for 2 years and never had a problem watering the cup indoors but for others who may would mind sharing what problems this could cause? Thanks for watching.
@heatherbrittingham4542 жыл бұрын
@PlantyPrincess It can cause the tank to rot. If your plant gets plenty of light it probably won't be an issue. I lost a couple leaves from doing this and not checking. I pulled the leaves and it dried and repaired. If you are going to use the tank you should start with a small amount of water and check to make sure it isn't sitting for too long. If the plant still has water in the tank after a couple of days, you should remove it. lol I used a turkey baister, and water around the bottom of the plant from then on.
@NailzByA2 жыл бұрын
Thank you for this info! Yea mine are in a room with lots of windows, north east and south, so mine do have plenty of light to help get rid of the water and it does evaporate pretty quickly but it’s good to know if growing it in a less lit location to not fill it or not fill it as much! Lol I’ve used the medicine dispensers to get excess water out so I’m with ya there lol thanks for watching!

So in one pot I used pure orchid bark and in the other I used leca. They both grew fine but I’d recommend orchid bark if you’re not used to growing semi hydroponically with leca or aren’t planning to convert. Hope this helps.
