I didn't even know what Bromeliads were til a few days ago! haha! I saw them in a grocery store and got one. After researching them, I wnet back for more and found one just like the one you have here, though it's not dying back at all yet. BUT- it already had a flowering pup on it! So I got a free plant with that one! I separated it and potted it up. It's doing well! I did have to prune off damaged leaves because grocery stores never take care of their plants. It doesn't seem to have stress the plants at all, which I was worried about. I love this video and will subscribe. I know I'm 4 years late seeing this...haha!

Bromeliads only use roots for anchoring themselves to other structures. All the moisture is absorbed through the center cup structure. You have to keep water in it at all times. Can't let it remain dry, even if it's in moist soil. It's nice to mount them on wood or bark to make attractive wall decor. Great video

I bought a little one at the grocery store a few weeks ago, it looked abused and neglected so I had to get it lol When I bought it, I thought it looked like it had been dumped over and put back in the pot. It is doing fine, but there is very fine black dirt in all the cracks of the plant and I can't get it out. I don't want to damage it, I have tried a toothpick and it comes out a little but like I said, I don't want to "pick" at it. I've rinsed but it's still there. Is it possible it's not dirt but a fungus?? It really bugs me and takes away from the pretty orange color. Thanks for your videos!
@HerbandRoots4 жыл бұрын
It could be dirt. They tend to catch everything that falls near them😂 and also get tossed around in shipping and stocking. I would try to use a strong stream of water and maybe a soft brush. If that doesn't get it then I would leave it! Congrats on the new Bromeliad!👍

Hello, how often should I put the water into the "tank" obvsiouly its october and I live in england so its not hot. I know during hotter season I should water the tank more often but what about autumn/winter. should I let it dry out or keep it filled all the time ?
@HerbandRoots4 жыл бұрын
I fill them as soon as I notice they are empty but you can let them dry out for a few days once the water is gone and rinse the cup if necessary. I do have really good air circulation and light where these guys are. When I water I just pour water into the center cup and let it run into the other cups until it starts to run into the soil.
@LISTEDGames4 жыл бұрын
@@HerbandRoots I only have one cup since I have only one plant. and how do I rinse it? I heard the soil shouldn't be too wet just slightly moist. I also heard that the leaves need to be misted but how often? All of these articles online don't really specify. thanks it really helps
@HerbandRoots4 жыл бұрын
They tend to leave things vague since it all depends on the amount to light, temperature, air circulation, growing media, humidity etc. When I say I let it run into the other cups I just mean the space around the lower leaves around the center cup. To rinse you would just spray gently with clean water and dump it. I don't find this necessary since I do not get any build up in there. I would only rinse if you get debris or mold in there. What works for me, is to fill the cup and when it is almost empty again I fill it up again. I don't mist but it will not hurt especially if you leave them on the dry side. I would use rain or distilled water to avoid a hard water build up on the leaves. I do not water the soil directly but just let enough run down into the media to keep it moist. The media gets quite dry between the times I fill the cup.

Thanks for the great video. I have one that seems to be dying (maybe from root rot?). I just tried repotting it today and used your video as a guide to prune the flower at the top (very dead). How often should this plant be watered? I'm currently in an apartment with 90 degree heat...the previous pot it was in had no drainage. The new pot does...could you recommend how to best help it along? I prunned any brown leaves and planted it in new soil, and have it on a bookcase about 7 feet from my sunny window. Any advice would be appreciated! Thanks
@HerbandRoots4 жыл бұрын
What is the humidity in the area where you keep it? If you have 90 degrees and low humidity (less than 40%), you might also consider misting them occasionally. Try only adding water to the central cups of the plant and give enough to let some of the water drain down into the soil but not drench it. I usually water when the cups are almost dry. They mainly use their roots to anchor themselves and take in most of their water through the leaves. The light sounds about right. They are ok in lower light but too much direct light can be harmful. They also like good air flow. Good luck with your Bromeliad! 👍

Most Bromeliads do not require a lot of light. When I first separated the pups, I just had them in a south east facing window with no artificial light. I have them under two 15W led lights now for 12 hours a day. For this species, the more intense light has brought out more purple in the leaves.

I bought it from Home Depot two weeks ago with a tall sword already formed. This is my first bromeliad, so I’m learning as I go. Does the red sword mean it’s already bloomed? Thanks again!
@HerbandRoots3 жыл бұрын
Yes. It is currently in bloom. They can stay in bloom for several months. After the bloom starts to fade, the mother plant will then start to produce pups around the base. The mother plant will keep producing pups after you remove the first set. The little fuzzy part is most likely the actual flower. The large colorful part is actually a bract.

Bright indirect light is generally best. Some can take lower light as well. This is genus Vriesia tolerates low light but brighter light brings out the purple tones in the leaves. In lower light they will be more green like the mother plant.

@Franco Navarro I kept the mother plant going after that and she produced another round of pups. I am not sure of the limit but you can get at least a couple of rounds of pups. Here is a later video with an update on the repotted pups and mother plant. kzbin.info/www/bejne/i5mbnXSDZ6iLpKs Don't worry about the roots too much. Your bromeliad is gorgeous! It looks amazing! When they say the "leaf vase", they are talking about the cup in the middle that the flower comes out of. When I water, I pour water into the central cup in the middle where the flower spike is and keep pouring until it starts to drain down into the soil.
