Brompton Summer Adventure *Feel Good*! Forget Cancer! Bikepacking around London - River Wey

I’m back!! In August, I took my (new!) Brompton and cycled along the River Wey, a wild summer bikepacking adventure. It was *wonderful*. Close to home in London, but I felt so happy, and so free, out on the bike again, with my gear, sleeping in my tent...
I have not been out for a while, because earlier this year I found out that my breast cancer had come back. I've been having loads of scans and hospital appointments, and I've had an operation, and now I'm on chemotherapy. But the hospital has encouraged me to be active, and to enjoy the things I like doing if I feel good enough. So, alongside chemo, I am out bikepacking again. Yay! I took extra care, in particular to minimise the risk of infection, with extra medical kit etc. And it feels like my gorgeous weekend of "cycling therapy" was at least as powerful as chemotherapy. It made me feel strong! Myself again.
And why a new Brompton? Well, just after I had my operation, my beloved lime green Brompton was stolen, from right behind me by the Thames in Bermondsey. Everything was going wrong. But after this trip, I feel much better. Hope you enjoy the film!!

You're a true adventurer Susanna!! So wonderful to see you taking your gorgeous new Brompton out to find the source of the Wey even while going through treatment 😎 I did wonder if something was up - I'm truly sorry to hear what you're going through and I hope the coming months will go ok for you!! My own journey with wild camping started following a cancer diagnosis 7 years ago. My sister died from cancer aged 50 and three days after we buried my sister, I got a breast cancer diagnosis. The shock I needed to make the most of this precious life and not keep ignoring the things I truly wanted to do....and so began my journey of finally listening to an inner voice that I'd been ignoring for years which was urging me to go and wild camp - not that I even knew what that was!! Thank you so much for sharing this part of your life with us all...your adventure life and your humanity in facing the life challenges that hit us all. Wishing you all the health, strength, support and love to carry you through to the other side of this....my sincere best wishes!! xx

Aw lovely Miriam, thank you for writing such a moving comment. Truly sorry to hear about your sister, and about your own diagnosis. What was your sister's name? Omg that must have been a simply horrendous time. My Mum died of breast cancer, during the time I had it first time round. Her name was Jenny. I'm glad that you're having what look like some really lovely good times outdoors in nature since then. My cousin sent me Mary Oliver's The Summer Day poem, the one with the line “What is it you plan to do with your one wild and precious life?” I didn't know it actually. I love it. You make beautiful, beautiful films. Keep going! Both of us! xx

@@susannathornton ah Susanna - your mum Jenny dying during your first bout, that's so tragic and must have been incredibly tough. My sister Olwen died from endometrial cancer at 50, I'm now 49...the lottery of life seems very random. I'm familiar with that line from the Mary Oliver poem but had never read the entire poem until now...it's beautiful! Wishing you well for the upcoming inner and outer journeys coming your way - I'll be looking forward to your next instalment alongside all your other fans!! 😍 xx

Hi Big Dave! aw that's such a nice comment. Mm yeh I do think that it's a shame that cycling is often pictured as being challenging and sporty - fast, epic, hard, busting yourself, dirt flying etc, lycra and whatnot... All that is great but slower and shorter is good too, mini adventures maybe or just riding to the shops. That can be very nice. Yeh pretty much anyone can have a lovely time on two wheels I think, doing their own thing. Looking forward to hear about your rides haha. Scotland, sounds good. When it rains it pours! Hopefully good times again aren't too far away for you. Thinking of you and fingers crossed you are back to good health soon. All the very best. Ps My First Brompton was stolen after only 2 years of ownership from right outside the main entrance of Senate House, Mallet Street in London, the then HQ of London University. Don't know if it still is. Was there for my Masters Graduation ceremony and couldn't take it inside. The management said "No" so had to lock it up outside to an Oxford stand. When I came out after the ceremony it was gone. That feeling of panic will never leave me. I had been all over France on that Brompton, Paris, the Basque country, up and over the Pyrenees over the famous TdF cols, Marie Blanc the Soulor, Aubisque, Tourmalet, Peyrousade. I was gutted and crushed that some one had my bike. I got a replacement fairly quickly on my house insurance who were pretty good, but I still miss that first Brompton. It was special. Your orange one looks grand. Really like your set up with your Ortlieb panniers. I rode the Brecon and Monmouthshire canal from Abergavenny and back on my Brompton on the hottest day of this year 38C in Wales. It was fabulous under the cool of the trees over the canal and spectacular views as it is quite high up. Bromptons are great bikes.

Aw sorry about your Brompton being stolen like that. Yes I didn't sleep all night after mine was stolen! I kept wondering where it was, thinking about it in a strange room somewhere all on its own... I hoped they were looking after it. I was so so so upset, more sad about that little bike than if, in the old days, one of my racing bikes had been stolen, actually. Somehow that little folder meant more! Yeh it was so strange to me too, to think that someone else was riding it (or not, prob they soon stripped it down...) Arh it hurts to think about it! Yes I still miss it, like you miss yours! Sounds lovely your ride in south wales that hot day. Bravo you. Thanks for writing!

Aw thanks Lynne! Hope you're well and had a good summer! Yeh it was really nice scenery on this ride, all those woods and deep lanes, and the towns were surprisingly nice too. I hadn't realised that Surrey towns were like that. Like Godalming, wow, it was so pretty! like how you imagine a sort of perfect town. They seemed to have kept cars out. Makes such a difference doesn't it - people were actually enjoying the streets wandering around eating ice creams and whatnot. And yeh finding the spring was good fun haha. I had to jump over a gully and scramble up a bank to get into the wood actually but I didnt film me jumping and scrambling because I forgot to film until I had already done it. I am always doing that sort of thing, just crashing on and forgetting to film. Thanks for watching! And thank you for the lovely comment!

That was very exciting when you finally found it! You make England look so beautiful and drenched in history, gratefully watched by this Japan expat. My brother lives on the Sussex Downs and adores it. Spends every day walking his dog there. Very sorry about the cancer. Would love to buy you a new Brompton or compensate for the lost one as a thank-you for all your work. Reminds me of Kazuo Ishiguro "Remains of the Day". Take care of yourself!

I'd be so interested to see how you find all the cycle paths you take. Is it something you plan beforehand, or wing it a little on the day? Even from London, you seem to find wonderful, peaceful areas to cycle around, it's wonderful to watch. How about a little planning video on "how too" Kind wishes Richard.
@susannathornton
@susannathornton 2 жыл бұрын
Hi again Richard! Yeh on these rides, I do normally do a lot of planning before I set off, well I say planning, more like dreaming and staring at maps (paper, online, a mix) and thinking oh that looks a nice road, how could I get there, oh there is a track there, oh look that connects like that, aha, oh there seems to be an interesting old mill, bridge, castle etc etc there, let's try loop in that that too etc etc etc. I think it's really nice to do, sort of sofa-based exploring. So based on all the dreaming I eventually kind of pin down a plan. And then it's brilliant to go off on the bike and find out what the tracks and lanes and castles are all really like... I do do some winging it on the road, and sometimes a bit of serendipity is great, but I find it can take time standing in the road puzzling out a new plan, and when I do hasty decisions they often kind of go wrong and end up with me doing boring big roads or having to retrace steps etc etc. Especially on a short trip like this one, just a couple of days, I want to make the most of the limited time, so I try to be as well planned as possible. I love planning routes. Such a nice thing to do. I did a little bit on how I do route planning in the Gear film, but you will have seen that already I think. Rambling long answer!

Absolutely beautiful countryside and not a million miles away from civilisation. On top of your health problems losing your old Brompton must have been a reel blow, I know I would have been even upset even though my old bike has very little value. I've had the old thing for over 20 years and it's like a friend as we've been to so many places together. I hope you had it insured as they're not cheap. I think doing the things you enjoy is the best medicine, worrying about things won't change anything. You've beaten this before and my money is on you doing it again. Thank you so much for sharing your adventure, already looking forward to the next one.

Aw thanks Colin! yeh I know what you mean, my old Brompton felt like an old friend too. After it got nicked I felt so upset, and I felt sort of sorry for it, all on its own, somewhere cold with strangers who might not look after it, that's silly isn't it but I did. Yeh doing things you enjoy is great medicine. Happy cycling!
