I think the general consensus is that Tirek in Season 5 stole Discord's energy merely for the power boost; actually tapping into the chaotic aspect of Discord's energy is what Tirek seemingly can't do because he's pure evil, not a chaotic, unbalanced entity like Discord.

This makes sense - Tirek absorbs magic, but seemingly not its abilities. He never grows wings, or the ability to teleport; so he absorbed the "battery" part of Discord's magic, but knows he can't control the "function"

Still doesn’t make sense, as Tirek himself says that he devours and absorbs magic, not energy. He should have been able to absorb Discord’s magic from the Bell just as he once did from Discord directly. Ergo, he should’ve had no problem absorbing Discord’a magic from the Bell. If anything, I think it would’ve made this episode more epic if he had. He would’ve been gigantic. Give Cozy Glow her Alicorn magic, give Chrysalis the ability to use the magic of whatever form she has taken, and give Tirek his giant form. The Mane Six and everyone else defeating them would’ve had more impact that way. Though I still think the idea of Discord posing as Grogar to redeem these villains to give Twilight more confidence was better. They’d betray him, use the magic from the Bell, and unintentionally release the real Grogar, who was trapped inside of it. The three of them would work with the Mane Six to stop Grogar, admitting at the end that they are friends with each other.

We have to remember when considering the Discord Magic thing: Tirek drains essence, so he probably got all of Discord's magic, but it was probably distilled into raw energy. The bell likely just takes Character A's magic as is and gives it to Character B.

The only valid argument I've seen for "Tirek's schtick copies abilities" is that he made Twilight's friends appear in bubbles. But Tirek opened a portal to Tartarus *before* draining Discord, so I don't believe that's the case. I think his magic drain is significantly more inefficient than Grogar's bell, which does a far better job of bestowing abilities associated with the magic.

He drains core magic (faded eyes and coats) but can leave the magic of the individual alone, thus why he can only drain living beings of magic; Where as this bell can siphon not only core magic but the magic an individual has in all magical aspects, like unto the spell used by Star Swirl to maintain the rotations of the sun and moon, at that time on a dying eclipse....wait, no their cutie marks weren't removed. So it removes their magical abilities and powers and some of their core magic to negate it but not remove it? Sorry, theory elements of my own. I was surprised, to be honest. First of all, that Discord would suggest it; he knows just how awful it was for him. Second, when the punishment is about to happen... Luna, Discord, Starlight, Trixie, and Tempest are all right there, and not even one of them speaks up to offer the villains a chance.

Grogar's Bell could also contain the _properties_ of the magic, which is something Tirek can't do, hence why he didn't gain chaos magic when he drained Discord back in season 4. He merely gains the magnitude of the power, but not its properties.

Tirek may have drained Discord before, however, at that point in "Twilight's Kingdom", Tirek was stronger than he was here - the bell returned him to his third form, but he took Discord's magic once he was in his fourth form, having just absorbed the magic of the Mane Six. It's likely that in his current state Tirek isn't strong enough to control Discord's magic like he could before, and since he was able to do it before, he would know that he's not cut out for it this time. Also, it appears that when Tirek absorbs the magic of others he converts the foreign magic into his own form of magic, but the bell simply transfers magic from one being to another; so in "Twilight's Kingdom" Tirek didn't have to deal with the chaotic nature of Discord's magic, just the enormous raw power the Lord of Chaos possesses. Another way of looking at is it that Tirek's mana drain only lets him absorb the raw energy of the person he drains. The bell, however, steals not only a person's inherent magical energy, but also the unique powers attached to that energy. When he first drained Discord, Tirek only received a boost to his own power, whereas if he tried to absorb the magic using the bell he'd be overwhelmed by the chaos energy attached to it.

Indeed. They were clearly setting up a transition arc for them in Frenemies but just ended up doing nothing with it. Honestly, what was even the point of bringing them in season nine? They swore revenge and by the end they still swear revenge. They where already no threat to Equestria by the beginning of season nine until Discord messed up big time. Overall, I'm too very disappointed in what could've been a way more interesting story rather than the typical finales for FiM at that point.

So when I first saw Grogar to be revealed as Discord, my immediate thought was that he was actually trying to teach all of the pass villains to be friends the same way he was taught about friendship to prove to twilight that she really was a good ruler/leader. I was actually pretty disappointed when that wasn't the case. It seems like a waste of a good twist Like remember the episode where they all work together to get the Bell? It was hinting at the three of them becoming friends but then it never went anywhere with that plotline. Now imagine they find out discord was trying to force friendship on them for twilight's sake It also doesn't make discord look as douchey His motive would have been more justified. Instead of wanting to cause a conflict for Twilight to fix, he would have been proving to her that he learned that "friendship is magic"

I mean, that still might have been the case, he might have been hoping to soften them so Twilight could convert them in the actual confrontation, thus boosting her confidence even more. But that plan didn't seem to be working, so he was gonna go with plan B of just having them defeated and probably imprisoned once more by the time they betrayed him. I mean, he was putting an awful lot of emphasis on teamwork, but from his perspective, it just wasn't sinking in.

I think a lot of people were theorizing and hoping the villains would side with Twilight at the finale to defeat Grogar, the bigger evil, and it would have been pretty cool that Discord, on his own would of gone behind their backs to teach friendship to other villains so they can feel what he did when he was given a second chance. Granted it took him 6 seasons, but he learned nevertheless. The plan just backfired on him. Would of been cool but oh well. Least we have fanfics for that.

That would’ve been so much better. The villains could’ve befriended each other and the Bell would be the main contention point. Perhaps it contains Grogar’s spirit as well? By using it, they’d accidentally release Grogar, who would challenge Twilight at her coronation. The villains would be part of the team that defeats the real Grogar. Discord would prove that Twilight’s friendship really can solve almost all of their problems, and it would feel like a fitting end to the series. Not to say I hate this finale, because I don’t. Just feels like it would’ve been more poetic and sensical if Discord had been trying to show the villains the power of friendship.

I have a theory about Tirek. When he took Discords magic, he already already had the magic/essence of the earth ponies, pegasi, unicorns and then finally Cadence, Celestia and Luna. So Tirek had bulked up to a point where his body could handle the massive amount of magic. With him being as small as he was in these two episodes, he just just didn't have the girth to accommodate it. For Pinkie though ummm, it's Pinkie Pie, we don't question it.

I think with the whole thing of 'no one can control chaos magic', there's a difference between taking the magic and controling it. Let me try to explain... When taking his magic back in the season 4 finale, I believe Tirek was more or less taking the energy, and converting it into his own magic. He couldnt actually use any spells or anything. Like when he took the princesses magic, he didnt test the control of the sun and moon like most villians would. He just started destroying shit. And I don't remember him using teleport either... I guess another way of putting it would be like One for All from MHA. Obviously past users had quirks but All Might and Deku only has the enhanced strength and speed, not necessarily past user's quirks. (There's more I can say to explain, but i can't without spoiling shit from the manga so....) Anyway, I think that's an explanation for that scene. Oh! I also think there'd also be a difference between taking and giving the magic, maybe? I ont know, this is all just a theory really.

Anyone else catch that sigh sound effect as Celestia and Luna's combined magic attack got absorbed into the bell sounding rather...sexual? It also sounded like their necks broke the instant they both hit the ground afterward. Plus, as much as I find the "Big NO!" trope to be overused, Twilight sounded genuinely horrified. Props to Ms. Strong for that!

It ain't over.... most of us stopped watching the show at some point just to come back for the finale. The finale changes nothing, lol. You gotta remember that other just as large fandoms like furries, sonic, and Star Trek have kept their fandoms nice and ridiculously active despite a lack of consistent official content/official content being garbage.... My point is: the ride is not over until fanart, fanfics, music, unofficial merchandise by fans, discussion, etc stops. Nobody has to feel weird about this. Why the hell no reactor ever CANNOT understand how Grogar's Bell works ? Tirek's ability convertes magic into raw power. He can't use any special abilities that consisted of that magic. Grogar's bell however transmits the magic from one being to another, allowing the latter to use all magic abilities in the bell as if they were their own.

According to series director Jim Miller, Discord impersonating Grogar was planned from the beginning of Season 9, as they wanted Chrysalis, Tirek and Cozy Glow to be the main antagonists of the finale because they had more of a personal connection to the main characters. The defeat of the Mean 3 was also meant to be symmetrical to Discord's battle with Celestia and Luna and later his defeat in Season 2.

I think of tirek as draining magic like draining a battery. Whereas the bell takes their magical capabilities. Tirek couldn't use new magic he wasn't capable of using before he absorbed the magic of discord or the alicorns. The bell stole the magics properties. That's my head cannon.

I’m rewatching this 4 years later and I like that there continues to be a difference in the show between Tirek’s powers and Grogar’s bell. Tirek seemingly takes a magical component used to create magic, using that to generate more magic within himself. Hence why cutiemarks disappear. The bell, on the other hand, takes all “refined” magic, including the reserves, rendering them flightless and powerless. Which is why no one can take Discord’s magic. His magical component is vast but ultimately limited. Eons of stored magic though? Much harder to use

Notice when twilight used the rock as shield it had purple sparkly thing all over and the villains couldnt break through, but at 50:03 the rock's purple sparkly thing is gone and starts to fall apart. I'd like to think that the rock was able to hold off tirek, cozy, and chrysalis' magic because twilight reinforced it with her magic.
