THANK YOU. I'm not a breeder so didn't want to buy an expensive brooder for one clutch of eggs, but want to be semi-prepared in case I need to pull the babies. I bought an incubator for the younguns but this will suffice as I am home 24/7 and can keep an eye out. Just need some confidence in feeding them if necessary now; have no one but youtube to show me how.

what should i add as the flooring? i was thinking beech woodchips but im not sure
@feistyfeathers33084 жыл бұрын
I have no idea if beech is toxic or has issues. Some wood (cedar especially) is bad. Most people stick to pine or aspen.

Hi what the difference between a incubator and Brooder and for new baby you do medium or high
@feistyfeathers33082 жыл бұрын
An incubator is for incubating eggs and is kept at a higher temperature. A brooder is for keeping chicks warm. The temperature of a brooder depends on the age of your chicks, but I recommend medium or low. High could burn them. Always keep an eye on the temperature.

How often would you replace the bedding to prevent bacterial growth?
@feistyfeathers33082 жыл бұрын
When it gets too smelly or soiled. It depends on how old the babies are and how many are in the tub. Older babies make a much larger mess.

Can you use a towel under the heating pad then tissue instead of wood shavings

What age would you recommend for this type? Would 2-3 weeks be to young?
@jasonschultz79643 жыл бұрын
Nope you can start there!
@feistyfeathers33082 жыл бұрын
For most species I pull chicks for handfeeding when their pinfeathers are just starting to open. Some species, like ringnecks, are naked longer though. For them I pull at two weeks.

Do i put the setting on high or medium?
@feistyfeathers33086 жыл бұрын
Medium or low, depending on the babies. If they're panting a lot and spread out then they are too hot. If they're huddled together and shivering they are cold. It's best to do a test run before putting chicks inside.

This one is many years old and I hear newer models have an automatic shut off feature. My veterinarian peruses thrift stores for older models and hoards them.
