This felt like such a wholesome episode. After all the bitter rivalries, yelling and unraveling so far, it was nice to just see two people laugh and play a game they enjoyed and pitch a sitcom while at it. 😄 Villainous is a great game and even if it really shines with 2 players, I'm still hoping to see a 6-player game of Villainous featured at Board Game Club at some point!

Unusually uncharacteristic behavior from Tom. Smiles? Laughter? Less dark villainy and more bits? Both played a pretty good game, and congratulations to the winner! (don't wanna spoil it) I just got the latest expansion and I won as Syndrome yesterday. Love this game. You guys should do a tournament of just Villainous, with each player taking one character and seeing how they match up against each other, or just one massive game where we get to see the use of the fate token.

Villainous is fun, but the fundamental problem with the base set is that the villains are all over the place in terms of difficulty. Queen of Hearts & Prince John tend to be the easiest, while Jafar & Ursula are quite difficult to play. Multiplayer games can also have a bit of a "gang up" problem - there is a mechanic that the same player can't be fated twice in a row, but if you seem to be doing well early on, the rest of the table will fate you frequently and you're screwed. In my experience, the winner in a multiplayer game is often the person who seems to struggle early on and therefore gets left alone. It's a fun game for sure but it's not well balanced for going really deep with it.

With recent developments, I felt an urge to go back and rewatch the Red Queen of the Board's first step in her victory procession. Given her sharpness in other games, the number fumbling in this episode is shocking. But it does seem that the one on one contests did bring on some nervous panic in all players in this contest. Also now wondering if there will be a 2023 Lord of the Board contest this year?

Maleficent may be the coolest villain, but Scar is the best Disney villain. He has one salient point in his favor: His plan actually succeeded, and this is why he was not included in the game. His plan was simple: Kill Mufasa (success), convince Simba he's the one who got his dad killed (Success), run off/kill Simba (Success on run-off, Simba nearly dies in a desert), Rule Pride Rock as King (Success). What it took all happening in a chain to even get Simba to take a shot: Simba had to randomly run into Timon and Pumba to even *survive* til adulthood, Nala showing up and the two getting together, Mufasa's spirit showing up to give Simba a post-mortem quest drop, and Rafiki showing up in order to finally get Simba to shoot his shot. Even then, Nala, Timon and Pumba, AND Rafiki had to jump in on Simba's side to get him TO Scar for the final showdown. Let's look at the others, shall we? Captain Hook- Repeatedly owned by a junior-high kid who maimed him. Prince John- Repeatedly clowned by Robin Hood until his eventual loss. Queen of Hearts- failed to run down an incredibly gullible girl who she had directly in front of her. Ursula- Nearly lost her whole plan to a mute 16-year old girl, even AFTER cheating, came close to her win-con, Got drunk on power, lost control of the situation, and somehow could not dodge or deal with a half-wrecked ship running into her, despite having god-like power over the oceans the ship was traveling on. Jafar- Got close, I'll admit, but got outsmarted by a homeless man, his girlfriend, his pet monkey, and a rug. Maleficent- She was 2 seconds from victory. She was SO CLOSE, and she tripped at the finish line, allowing the Prince to live when she had him chained up and unable to defend himself, because she was really torqued about not getting that baby shower invite.

A friend and I played a 1v1 Villainous tournament when there were only 15 characters (Before Gaston and co.) 3 losses, and a character was out of the tournament. QoH didn't finish last place, but that's only because Scar is impossibly awful and difficult to play well. In the end it was Rattigan v Evil Queen for first place.
