RATS and cats aren’t famous for their strong friendship, however this New York cafe en'tails' peace and harmony between the furry animals. The Brooklyn Cat Cafe located on Atlantic Avenue has recruited two rodents, Emile and Remy, to help care for young orphaned kittens.

Or people just call mouses rats ( i dont know anymore 😔😔 ) sorry again

s a m p l e t e x t I think rats are amazing but what puts me off is that they’re big chewers (electrical cords) don’t always pee in a designated spot and have short lifespans. Access to specialised vets when they’re sick isn’t easy either. So I’ll admire them from afar.

Letting my children have rats as pets was a radical paradigm shift for me. I was astounded by the intelligence and emotional capacity of rats. The animal phylum was totally "rat-tled" for me. To think that most humans consider most rats to be vermin and that rats actually are impressive....

Marta Gilewska depends on how they are brought up. Mine only went into their cage during the night and toilet breaks otherwise they hung out on me, snuggled and hidden in my long sleeve top or pocket and had free run of my room. At lunch time I could have them on the grass where we sat at and they would run around but always came back to me when called, never went far from me. But yes it can be dangerous to have them outside and stressful in the wrong environment. I now have a dog and she’s exactly the same, goes everywhere with me, don’t leash her, a very close bond.

One day I saw a white mouse running down the sidewalk - I don't know where the hell she came from. I immediately panicked because I knew I had to rescue her. My friend was with me. She picked the mouse up, we drove straight to PetCo, got her all the supplies and she was nothing but a joy and delight for a year and a half. Smart, independent, super neat, and loving. A real gem, which is why I named her Sophie Pearl. To this day, I miss her. A great pet for someone who is pretty independent themselves. You HAVE to clean their little cage once a week; it's important for their health, but other than that, a complete joy to have. Do not underestimate a mouse or a rat. All creatures great and small.

@Breezey Peasy nice of you to clarify "Breezy Peasy" lol. Although you're wrong about white coloring denoting domestication. White animals of all sorts appear in nature regardless of the specie's typical coloring. Are you familiar with the term albino? Well guess what! This occurs in nature. You sound like the typical well to do city folk goofball. I'm all for treating animals with respect and empathy. However if people follow the original poster's methods with random rodents they are more than likely to get bit.

Long-term rat owner here. I have never raised a rat that wasn't as sweet and smart as any dog I've owned. Like any animal, the only way a rat will be aggressive is if it was not bred by a good pet rat breeder, not socialized from birth and/or mistreated. The ONLY negative IMO is the short lifespan (2 to 2 1/2 years 😢). I love my rats as much as any pet, so every two years I am heartbroken to lose one of my girls. The only salve is a pair of baby rats. Lol.

Sorry, you're mistaken. Animal psychologists have evidenced by experiment that if baby animals are not socialized to accept other species in infancy, they will automatically reject any except their own. All baby animals (young enough) will accept attention from any individual that is kind to them. This is a survival advantage, not the same as love. The rats had ALREADY been habituated to cats, they had LEARNED not to be afraid of them. Rats are naturally fearful of all predators. This can only be overcome by very early social conditioning. This is programmed into most animals by natural selection, meaning, the genetic lines that were MORE FEARFUL, were more successful than the genetic lines that were LESS FEARFUL. Would be nice if you were right. Sadly, that's just not the way the world works.

I had a few and whenever I heard them running in their wheel at night the first few times it annoyed me but later it always made me smile. It's cute background noise knowing they're having fun. Each time I cleaned their cage they got all excited building their "bedroom" and their "storage room", they had a distinct place for everything, they were very organised, also very curious and smart.

The black plague wasn't caused or spread by rats. Humans actually caused it by leaving dead livestock in the streets which the fleas drank the blood from and got the plague.humans also spread it by moving livestock around, not taking bathes, slerping with their livestock and living really close together. The only reason wild rats carry disease is cause of our filthy habits.

Well..... these are partially true...... I've come in contact with wild animals including wild rats and they are not like pets where they will be completely calm and friendly towards humans.... but they dont attack or show aggression either. They are just nervous. Second, the whole rats being dirty and overpopulating isnt the rats fault, its ours. Rats are filthy because of the massive garbage and polution we humans create. They are much cleaner in the wild. And the reason theres so many of them and they are pretty much pests is because we destroy the natural environment they come from. ANd in doing so remove the things that keep their population in check, like predators. So its our fault that rats are in the situation they live in now, not theirs. Besides all that, this shows that animals are just as capable of intelligence and empathy as we humans are.
@simozimo09

Arenita R. "Wild animals are not "nice", because they are wild. Have you seen any "nice" wild tigers or wild lions lately? They will gladly "'chew on an infant". Overpopulate???? Humans are the only species that "overpopulate". And they (humans) are by far the dirtiest creatures and carry the most diseases. You are far more likely to get a disease from a human than from an animal. That is a fact.

Mosly true comment, but believe it or not, there are actually lots of wild animals that will not actively threaten or attack humans, depending mostly on what the humans do. This includes animals like tigers and lions believe it or not. I've seen people interact with wild wolves just as an example, and no not wolves who are kept in cages or are fed by humans, or live near human habitat, i mean fully wild wol;ves. But of course these people understand wolf behaviour, and knew how to interact with them. Otherwise the rest of your comment is fully correct, especially about humans.

I used to always have rats..I actually saved a drowning rat from a flood in a monsoon in arizona. He lived and I released him in my yard in the desert. I had a mouse problem last year...a huge mouse problem. I caught them all and released them a few miles away where they had food and water sources. Pack rats are so cute and so were the mice I caught. I would never kill one...but mosquitos, flies, ticks or fleas...are always killed.

So glad to see rats getting a good press for once. I have kept a lot of different caged pets over the years and can honestly say that rats are the best by far. They are affectionate, playful, inquisitive, really good fun, and can learn to do activities. There are also a wide range of lovely colours to be found from specialist breeders, or you can obtain them from rescue centres that have rats, as well as pet shops. If you're on the fence about a caged pet, please consider a rat, you'll be glad you did !

Mice are good pets if you're okay with a look-at pet, like fish, because most kinds that are sold in pet shops are bred from feeder type mice. So they'll end up being very fidgety and not want to be in a hand for very long (though I've had a specific type -can't remember the name :( - that had the temperament of rats). Gerbils are very similar to mice in that way; they're very jumpy, not always wanting to be held. And they have a BIG need to chew. Bars (noisy!), wood anything (constant toy buying), and plastic is a no-go (tunnels like for hamsters will just get chewed through).

Think of it this way, if you saw a domestic cat in your friend's house you might think it was adorable; but if you ran into a cat in the wild, say a bobcat or a lynx, you'd have an entirely different reaction. Justin Peters While they can, that’s only if they’re exposed to such diseases. Domestic rats are actually very clean, as they groom themselves often, so the only way they’d be able to carry something would be due to negligence on the part of the owner. As someone who’s had many rats in my life, I can attest that they make very good and safe pets for just about anyone, so long as they’re from a trustworthy breeder or pet store. Like any animal, you shouldn’t compare domestic rats to their wild counterparts.

Rats are pets like hamsters. They are all rodents and make cute lovable pets. I have had hamsters and my friend had rats they are not dirty or have diseases if they are cleaned 😄

john brand: Diseases directly transmitted by cats Cat scratch disease Cryptosporidiosis Hookworm Toxoplasmosis Tuberculosis ... And more! Any pet can carry a zoonotic disease. So, what is your point? First become educated, then comment. Moron.
