Thanks for a very informative review of the Brooks 17 bike saddle. I ordered one on Amazon and am awaiting its arrival. I'm a 71-year-old cyclist here in Florida, and while I don't put in the number of miles that you do, I am, nevertheless, concerned about comfort. And you have made me feel very good about having purchased this saddle!

I bought a used lady's city bike on Ebay a while ago for £100. The Ebay listing title was 'Bike'. However, the photos revealed it was a Raleigh and also had a Brooks saddle! I quickly snapped it up and am absolutely delighted with it...it was like new! The saddle was painful at first but it quickly became comfortable after riding it a few times.

As well as a dab of Proofide once or twice a year, it's worth checking the tension of the screw at the front of the saddle once or twice a year. It's to compensate for the leather sagging, that's why they give you that funny spanner. Don't tighten it too much though, a quarter turn if needed should be enough.
@garymitchell5899
@garymitchell5899 3 жыл бұрын
You can hear if it's loose because it will rattle if you tap it. Need to tension it as much as it needs, might be a full turn sometimes.

The first thing I do when I buy a new bike is buy a Brooks B17 saddle for it. It looks to me as if the saddle in the video has been ridden while wet a few times. If you get a waterproof cover for it, and use it whenever it's rainy, it shouldn't sag in the middle, even after a few thousand miles. I've cycled at least 3,000 miles on my first Brooks saddle and it's retained its shape. In fact, apart from a few wrinkles, it looks as good as new.
@garymitchell5899
@garymitchell5899 3 жыл бұрын
The sag is the wearing-in and happens to them all, and it is necessary. The perils of getting these saddles wet is exaggerated. Yes - totally soaked for long periods would be bad, but occasional rain in is fine. Just the same as leather shoes.
@Beery1962
@Beery1962 3 жыл бұрын
@@garymitchell5899 I've had my Brooks saddle since 2012, I used it to commute to work every day for 4 of those years, rain or shine, and I still use it to this day, and I still haven't noticed any sagging at all. I stand by my earlier comment - serious sagging comes from rain saturation. Normal wear and tear does not and should not result in any serious sag. And profound sagging is not normal or necessary. That's why Brooks saddles have a screw under the nose to tighten the saddle if it starts to sag.

21000 km on my Brooks Flyer Imperial. I've sensitive sciatic nerve. For that the coil springs are excellent absorbing horizontal buttoks bony movement. There is nothing better on market. Sattle is still in good shape by giving regulary two fingertips of Proofide service, also enough reserve on screw to tension the leather. About each 3000 km the springs and where leather has contact to metal needs a short load of silicon spray to prevent noises. I hope Brooks will manage brexit well because it belongs to an Italien company.

A great review , thanks for uploading. when i bought my full susser EMTB i promised myself i would keep the original saddle on no matter what . Im no stranger to Brooks as ive had them on fixies and old fashioned path racer bikes...but who in the right mind would have a brooks on a full susser? After 500 miles and a painfull bum during and after the ride i had to give in to comfort over looks. its the first brand new Brooks ive bought and is a bit slippery, guess that will go in time.

Hi Dave, I've searched the map looking for the area where your next trip will be. I think I understood Thesalia. Is this the area where the monastries sit on fingers of rock featured in a Bond film once? You will need legs of steel if it is. Can't wait for the Vlogs though wherever.

Hi - Hope you're doing well! The two regions I'm heading for are Epirus and Thessaly. You're right with those mountains - that area is called Meteora, and I'll definitely be passing through there! From Meteora, I'll head to Metsovo (Pindus National Park), Ionnina, Dodona (UNESCO site) and loop back. If I've got time, I'll try and film in Delphi this time. The trip is still very much in the planning stages, but hoping to get 3 weeks or a bit longer starting 7th Sept!

A standard B17 lasts untill the white metal rivets break out. Those rivets are poor quality; considering the price of the saddle, that is simply unacceptable. Brooks should have installed the better copper rivets, which are larger and spread the tension better over the surface of the leather. Besides, copper won't rust or corrode easily.
@MrOzzy281
@MrOzzy281 3 жыл бұрын
Yeah but they have that option in the 'Special' available at a higher cost as copper has to be hammered by hand. If that was the only option you'd complain they were too expensive.....
@Useaname
@Useaname 11 ай бұрын
Yes they have to be hammered by hand, but there are setting tools for this purpose. A half decent leather worker with the correct tools and a proper base can set a copper rivet very quickly. Not much cost needs to be added. And there are also machines for setting copper rivets precisely. I'm sure Brooks has such a machine with all the sales they make.

I tried following the website tutorial and it’s fully straight but I’ve used it for abt a year on regular commutes and some 20mi rides and it still feels quite stiff. Any ideas? I’ve used proofide and all abt every 4-6months inside and outside. So I figured I might check some KZbin videos

I contacted the company and they did everything possible to blame me, making assumptions about mishandling the saddle. I just rode it! Maybe it's a good saddle when not defective but if it is defective as mine was, the company will do everything they can to blame you and not take any responsibility, not even offering an exchange.
