I have an old walking stick gathered from a family friend's land many years ago that my dad had wood burned for me. He died earlier this year and I would love to turn it into a broom now! I look forward to using this knowledge to do that! Thank you.

what is the difference between the nylon twine for the spindle and the nylon twine you use to sew the broom? is there a difference in the size? love all you videos. thanks for all the info.

I don't use nylon twine to sew the broom I used waxed linen.

Do you recommend a specific varnish you put on the braid?

How is the final round stitching finished ? You've left it unfinished in the video and hence my query.

That knot that you are calling a double loop is called a Lark's Head or a Cow Hitch.

@@Sheepdog1314 the only person that I know that teaches birch bark is Vladimir from Russia. He co-wrote a book with Flo Hoppe and Jim Widess. If you can find a copy there might be information on how to do so. www.amazon.com/Plaited-Basketry-Birch-Vladimir-Yarish/dp/1402748094

I don't plan to get a broom spindle until I see how much I like making brooms. What would you suggest using for someone who is a beginner and only making their first broom?
@jchoatebasketry2 жыл бұрын
piece of wood

Nice project, great looking broom. I've been growing a small patch of broom corn in my back garden for the last three years. I have a bit more than a kilo of tops saved-up and would love to start making a few brooms. I've seen many videos on KZbin but think your brooms look the best. I have holly wood to use for the stick handle bit, but don't know what type of twine to use for the webbing/tie-off bit. what is the red twine you used? Thank you
@jchoatebasketry4 жыл бұрын
Waxed linen for the sewing and nylon twine for the actual tying on of the broom

Do we need to use dry wood for the stick always or green is ok?
@jchoatebasketry3 жыл бұрын
Green sticks will shrink as they lose water. That may make your braid loosen up. I'd stick with non-green.

I looked it up. Linoleum knife might well work but that curve? I'll keep a straight edge.
