Ben was there to subtly govern Tim's rants. When Ben said "wait what?" Tim knew to switch up his angle in some way. When Ben was silent- Tim knew he didn't find the nerve just yet. And when Ben laughed Tim would smile knowing "okay time to hit the gas". Ben was precisely what Tim needed on The Tim Dillon Show.

Ben was 50% of the fun of the "Tim Dillon Show." Everyone has a line and Tim crossed it on Bonus episode 158 "Batgirl," hopefully in time Ben and Tim can still be friends; but what hurt Ben the most was that he thought Tim was his real friend and not just someone who is paid to hang out with him. On the Bonus episode 167 that was then deleted Tim said " all I can do is give you money, I can't fix problems any other way." I'm sure a simple I'm sorry would've went much further with Ben than here's a bunch of money stay. Then the part where Ben said"I'm sorry if I hurt your feelings man," and Tim's response was "No you didn't hurt my feelings, if you hurt my feelings I would just fire you and get someone else." Tim saw Ben as expendable when Ben is 50% of the fun, plus you don't treat friends as expendable if they are really your friends. I think that hurt Ben the most, he thought they were real friends and Tim I guess doesn't know how to treat real friends. Plus Tim was saying he didn't want to talk about the post Ben made on air yet he did it anyway, he should have just not done it at all if he really didn't want to talk about it. After episode 158 Tim fired Ben for standing up for himself, Tim later tried to hire Ben back and he refused. You don't treat people like a beaten dog and expect them to come back like nothing happened.

it's classic narcissistic behavior. they tend to latch on to nicer, more authentic or empathetic individuals who naively believe them to be real friends but the narcissist has no clue what that even really is and just continues to hurt the other person but they forgive them over and over until they eventually have enough and try to escape and break the cycle. it's a very unhealthy dynamic for sure.

So here’s actually why Ben was so important. Tim is funny when he can rant - and Ben’s combination of laughter, occasional commentary and mostly silence, facilitated that. You can’t invite a guest on the show to fill that role, cause it’s just weird. So what ends up happening is that Tim feels obliged to ask them questions as an interviewer and you lose out on the beauty of those unhinged tirades.

It's just a basic comedic precept, and I don't get people who pretend like it's not crucial to a good comedy dynamic. Sure, Tim can do it alone, but the dynamic would be lost if it's just him yelling into the ether. Ben acted like the audience, in many ways, a wall for Tim to throw stuff against and see what sticks. He's going to get lost on the podcast without Ben...and that would be a terrible shame.

@@vaughncollins1386 Ha! - I used to LOVE when T.D.'s vids would drop on a Saturday night, but for a long time now I find myself not making it to the end of most. It's like . . .50 - 60 mins of solid sarcasm, punctuated by Ben's laughs ( which hold up stuff that gets a little drag-y ), is a little too much. I'm not a comedian ( who the fuck am I to nitpick FREE comedy like some Karen? ), I'm nobody ( I'm unclean! ), and his open-ended, seat-of-the-pants, going for that "Bella! " moment ( which he hits sometimes ), and is like a home-run hitter who whiffs out 75% of the time; one deals with it or not. What were we talking about?

I saw Tim Dillon after he fired Ben at a grocery store in Los Angeles yesterday. I told him how cool it was to meet him in person, but I didn’t want to be a douche and bother him and ask him for photos or anything. He said, “Oh, like you’re doing now?” I was taken aback, and all I could say was “Huh?” but he kept cutting me off and going “huh? huh? huh?” and closing his hand shut in front of my face. I walked away and continued with my shopping, and I heard him chuckle as I walked off. When I came to pay for my stuff up front I saw him trying to walk out the doors with like fifteen Milky Ways in his hands without paying. The girl at the counter was very nice about it and professional, and was like “Sir, you need to pay for those first.” At first he kept pretending to be tired and not hear her, but eventually turned back around and brought them to the counter. When she took one of the bars and started scanning it multiple times, he stopped her and told her to scan them each individually “to prevent any electrical infetterence,” and then turned around and winked at me. I don’t even think that’s a word. After she scanned each bar and put them in a bag and started to say the price, he kept interrupting her by yawning really loudly.
