This was a very interesting video to watch as I was curious about what the inside of the Brose motor looked like. I will have my new Specialized Turbo Vado 4.0 soon and I believe this is the quality motor that Specialized used in their ebike builds. I have learned that one should use caution when cleaning an ebike so as to not expose it to unnecessary water.

One has to wonder what some people do with their bikes to get them in such a disastrous condition. Riding through streams is bad enough but pressure washing is on another level entirely . My question is WHY does your bike NEED to be so clean. Sure back in the day when frames would rust ,i could see cleaning wet mud off ,but most frames now are aluminum and don’t need to be cleaned . Keep your gears and chain lubed and your brakes clean but other than that forgetaboutit .

@Ebikemotorcentre
@Ebikemotorcentre 4 жыл бұрын
There is nothing to oil or grease in this motor. Everything should be able to run for the expected life span (what ever that is?) However, the best thing you can possibly do is catch problems early. Drop the chain off the front chainring on a regular basis. Turn the crank arms back and forth, listen to what it sounds like and feel for any play, roughness or tightness. If anything is sounding or feeling different, that the time to act! DO NOT tip oil into the space between the crankshaft and sprocket carrier, it will eventually get into the motor and cause a right mess.

@Ebikemotorcentre
@Ebikemotorcentre 3 жыл бұрын
Sorry to hear your motor is not working; There is nothing that requires resetting. Your issue is normally caused by corrosion of the plug terminals, where the motor plugs into the switch and power looms. Spray some contact cleaner into these plugs and ensure you have continuity and or power to the motor itself.

You said the main shaft was done for. Drawing on my experience, many years ago, working on copiers. It was common for us to have shafts significantly rattier looking than the one you showed. We just polished them using emery cloth or an abrasive green pad. They seemed to work fine (with new bearings of course). Couldn't that shaft have been polished to make a new surface for the gearing to run against?
@Ebikemotorcentre
@Ebikemotorcentre 3 жыл бұрын
The main cause of all bearing failure is a rough bearing race or surface. As these are needle rollers, the damage on the crankshaft tends to be from one side of the bearing surface to the other, caused when the bearing and shaft are stored wet and the needle rollers rust to the shaft. On a microscopic level, this will cause the needle roller to "bump" over this minute damage on every rotation. Over time, this can cause premature bearing wear. So, basically, from a "good engineering" perspective, the crankshaft should be changed. If the sprag bearing surface has any damage at all, it should definitely be changed or the sprag bearing will fail very quickly.

@@Ebikemotorcentre You're right motors change very often, Bosch is promoting its new 2020 series while more and more manufacturers are eyeing the e-bike business. I might buy a bike with Bosch in a couple of months only because the actual versions will be outdated and so cheaper. I started eyeing the Brose when I saw the Fantic e-bike from Italy but that is a hell expensive toy. What I've learned is that bikes mounting Brose motors are more expensive compared to similar bikes mounting Bosch, same thing with another new motor Polini from Italy, a beauty but hell expensive! I saw the inside of Yamaha and have to admit that is look ok and comparable to Bosch, just I don't understand why its name isn't very popular on the forums and reviews.

@@billadmond9450 Forums are great places if you first research how many of each motor are sold worldwide and into what market. Then look at what is failing and why it's failing? Unfortunately this is a bit tricky to get from forums due to the amount of misinformation mixed in with the good information. I see inside most motors from every market, at every mileage on a daily basis. I know which bearings, belts and parts I sell for which motors and know pretty well what fails most on what motor. I just can't write it here unfortunately. At the end of the day, all motors are pretty good and most people ride thousands of miles with no issues, so I generally tell people to just buy and enjoy what ever they like the look of or are happy riding. 👍

Also, I feel rather big clicks while rotating, it’s not smooth. Should it rotate easily and smoothly?
@Ebikemotorcentre
@Ebikemotorcentre 3 жыл бұрын
Sorry for the late reply, we were on holidays. The reason this part feels bad is because you have removed the motor cover and this supports the motor bearing. Without the cover on the motor will be forced against the magnets and should not be turned. To check this part is ok you can gently wobble or move side to side and back to front the small pully. It may move one way or another, but should not feel loose or wobbly. The other thing if you suspect a bearing, would be to remove the ECU cover and fit the belt cover without the belt, then with the motor properly supported you can spin it from the back with your fingers.

@@beardedgaming1337 No problem, our man Michael is in Tennessee if you need him. Please be aware that the angle magnet on the end of the armature must go back EXACTLY where you found it! Not 1 degree different. Get this wrong and your motor will be noisy, over heat or lack power (or all three). You will also need a 10 tone hydraulic puller to remove the magnets from the armature and you can not pull against the magnets or the steel stack holding the magnets, these will bend or break. A two legged puller will not work at all, even if you do manage to get them under the magnets far enough to reach the aluminum. You cannot buy any of these parts so if Michael cannot help, we can send parts over to him to forward to you. You will not find anyone doing this on the internet because as far as I know, we are the only ones in the world doing this at the moment. Best of luck :)

Thanks a lot for the video! I just received my Brose gasket and the rare 34 mm bearing and replaced everything including the drive belt. I tensioned the belt at 0.3 NM as stated in the video. The issue is that I still have a belt that starts slipping and is finally torn apart after few kilometers. Is this really the correct tension torque or did I misunderstand? Your answer is highly appreciated.
@Ebikemotorcentre
@Ebikemotorcentre 4 жыл бұрын
I am sorry to hear you have had an issue while working on your motor. The official torque setting is 0.2Nm but with older and stiffer used belts I use 0.3Nm. After doing this on hundreds and hundreds of motors, I can assure you 0.1Nm would make no difference to your belt. I have also done experiments with winding the torque up until the bearings complained and this just destroys the bearings. It is very easy to nick or catch the belt if screw drivers are used to remove the belt cover and this severely weakens the belt (not that I think you have done this). It is also very hard to see belt cracking and wear when the tension is released to remove the cover. I now use a thread tap to clean the tensioner screw hole and run the tensioner screw in and out of a die to stop any false readings. I can't say why your belt should fail so shortly after being removed and re-fitted but I can positively assure you it was not due to 0.1Nm of torque on the tension screw.

1200Pete, BIG thanks for all the details in your answer. I gave it another try. Well, carefully disassembled the housing and cleaned it properly, belt: brand new Gates powergrip 405-5M-15, tapped tensioning screw with M6, cleaned tap screw until it ran smoothly to avoid wrong readings, torque on tensioning screw: 0.2 NM with a special tool that arrived today. After 6 km of test drive (only road) the drive belt started slipping and was broken again. I disassembled everything again and checked whether there’s something touching the belt and damaging it, but everything was ok. I have only one suspicion: Am I probably using the wrong belt? Is this one just too weak? I heard that the original Brose belt is carbon enforced...
@Ebikemotorcentre
@Ebikemotorcentre 4 жыл бұрын
@@cenkyazer4224 Although Gates do manufacture the drive belts for Brose, the Gates Powergrip HTD 405-5M-15 are glass fibre strand belts and will strip or snap quite quickly. Hi, I have just spoken to your partner in Queensland Australia about a belt replacement. They recommended a special vaseline belt lubricant, but havent specified how much to use or where exactly it needs to be applied? Should I be applying that to the drive pulleys only or the new belt as well? Upon inspecting my customers motor and finding the shredded belt, it seems there is this belt lubricant pretty much everywhere inside the casing.

You will require "technical Vaseline" it's a little thicker and better than standard Vaseline. This should be available from Paul in Queensland. Brose state to "lubricate liberally" . We basically use a toothbrush and apply the technical Vaseline to the belt. A relatively thick layer to the tooth side without going mad, and a thinner film to the smooth side of the belt.

The Belt dimensions are 405-5m-15 which equals 405 length, 5mm pitch, 15mm wide and it has 81 teeth but like the bearings you have advertised, this will not help you. We have tried every type of belt on the market and none of them work! The Brose belt is carbon fibre and much stronger than the glass fibre, steel, aramid or Kevlar belts on the market. The Brose belt is made under licence by Gates and cannot be bought separately or independently. If you use “M” designation sprag bearings, they have a lower torque tolerance and will also fail! We have been doing this a long time and this is why we sell only the best and tested parts www.performancelinebearings.com/product-category/brose-bearings/ The direction of the bearings can be seen in this video.

If you watch the video from time 27:26 you will see the crank turns freely to the right and locks the torque converter (the part the crankshaft fits inside of) when turned to the left as held in the video.

How did you remove the chainring? mine is stuck solid on there i don't know how to remove it.
@Ebikemotorcentre
@Ebikemotorcentre 2 жыл бұрын
The easiest way to remove the chainring spider is to fit the Brose puller tool and then use a two legged puller to pull the spider off the sprocket carrier. The Brose tool is basically a steel cap that MUST be fitted over the crankshaft so the puller is "pushing" against the sprocket carrier and not the crankshaft itself. A socket slipped over the splines of the crankshaft can be used as long as it's deep enough. If you don't have all this gear, you can sometimes get away with warming the spider gently with a heat gun and pulling with heat protected hands on each side of the chainring alternately.

The drive pulley (big wheel) has a sprag clutch bearing inside it so it floats and can move around quite a bit. This is normal. (try not to do it too much, the sprag bearings are quite delicate)

I have a Scott E-Aspect 910 from 2017 and i suppose it has the Brose S in it but i haven't found any manual to verify that with. My cranks are slipping when i put substantial power into them, i've read the sprag bearing should be capable of 250 Nm and i am definitely not putting that much into it, so i am thinking the sprag bearing is failing. Question is, are there still replacement (incl compatible 3rd party) bearings available or am i SOL? I don't have many tools at home so i am also wondering, what's the easiest way of telling exactly what motor i have? I assume any stickers would sit on the bottom side of the bike behind a plastic cover, right? My last ride "in the wild" i did, as i was starting on an upslope, there was this god awful noise as if the chain was slipping over the sprockets but i am certain it wasn't the chain but rather something inside the motor assembly. Could this have been my sprag bearing destroying itself and the source of the slip? Can the "pulls" (can't really make out what you call them, the fingers of the sprag bearing) flip over inside the bearing to make such an awful noise? Other than that, it's nowhere near as bad as it sounds in this video. There's no play in the cranks and it just sounds slightly worn overall but nothing really out of the ordinary. Still, if the sprag bearing is to be replaced then i might as well do a full service. So is there a complete kit one can get and what would it cost me?
@Ebikemotorcentre
@Ebikemotorcentre 4 жыл бұрын
Sounds just like a typical sprag bearing failure. The figure of 250Nm, as you say, would never be exerted by pedalling, but a lot of people overlook the power of a pedal strike or crash! What tends to happen is that the plastic cage that holds the sprags in place breaks and then there is enough room for one of the sprags to flip over or lay flat. This is when you get the cracking and popping noises. This is a sure sign failure is imminent. Once enough sprags "lay down" there is now too much room for the bearing to jam and slipping starts. We have these bearings for sale on our website www.performancelinebearings.com

No, you can't (or rather it does not make any sense), because in order to function properly the oval chainring has to be fixed in a certain way related to the crankarms (i.e. with the crankarms level (horizontally), the part with the bigger diameter has to be pointing towards 2 o'clock position).Whereas on an ebike, with the crankarm spinning independenly of the chainring the position of the oval would be random (constantly changing), so it does not make any sense.

Hello! Please tell me where to buy a puller to remove the fastening of the leading chainring. I started a noise in the engine, it feels like the gears are out of the grooves, there is a strong vibration and a crack is heard. Sometimes a strong blow is heard, as if the mechanism falls into place and there is no more noise. After some time, it may appear again suddenly. With engine support disabled, it also pops, but makes a lot more noise when you turn on the engine. Mileage 2300 km. Sometimes I get on the pedals and spin like on a highway. I want to inspect the condition of the belt.
@Ebikemotorcentre

This is a sprag clutch bearing failure, we have them in stock if you need one (check the bearing surfaces though and use the right grease or you will have more trouble). Any suitable two or four legged puller can be used to remove the spider. Or, try heating it with a hear dryer or carefully with a hot air gun, it usually comes off a lot easier.

@@Ebikemotorcentre Thanks for the answer! Tell me, can a belt make such sounds? And where is this clutch bearing located? Judging by your video: this is a very delicate job to change it (clutch bearing). I do not have such devices as yours. I noticed the following: that this sound of cod appeared after I drove through the puddles in the rain. At first I thought that this chain with the rear stars gives such a return to the legs in the form of vibration and a slight crackle. Yesterday I went without problems, without any knocking. And today I started to pedal without turning on the power of the bicycle, felt strong vibration on the pedals and crackled, turned on the bicycle, applied the economy mode (minimal assistance), the vibration intensified several times. At the same time, if you pedal without strong pressure, then there is practically no crack sound, as soon as you press the pedal with force or put a higher level of support, this sound is amplified ten times and vibration is transmitted to your feet. Could there be a problem with the gears in the planetary gear? Do you have a video parsing this part? Sometimes I hear a sharp blow and after that the motor works fine (it feels like these gears are falling into place)

@@evgeniy6500 No, the belt will scream if it strips the teeth off or just snap and be quiet. If you don't have the tools, we offer a worldwide motor repair service. But generally I am deeply questioning the sanity of buying one of these e mountain bikes with a plethora of highly machined to fail motors and other parts that also need a raft of specialist tools to service and inevitably plastering the things in mud sand grit and water and expecting nothing to go wrong. And paying north of 5k for the bleddy thing. This is madness and specialised / brose should be ashamed of themselves Castle nut sockets, pulling crank arms off, bearing pullers. All the crap impossible to remove behind the chain wheel. Cable runs, electrical connectors and all in line of fire of spray from the front and back wheels.
