Thank you so much. My youngest sister died last month of liver cancer. In her last days she only wanted the 23rd Psalm said or sung to her over and over again in three of its forms, including straight from the Psalms, Crimond, and Brother James' Air. She finally died as the last verse ended, on October 6, She was 85.

When I was 6 years of age, my late older brother suffered from peritonitis and briefly died on the operating table. As he recovered, having partially lost the power of speech, my mother would play Brother James' Air on the piano and he would sing with her. This beautiful rendition brings back bittersweet memories for me.

+Nigel Frost Your mother must have been a very beautiful person. Your legacy, as for so many of us, is rich, because it is informed with both joy and loss. Thank God for music!!

I sang both Crimond (with descant) and Bro. James Air as a boy soprano and I truly believe that this Brother James Air is my favourite!!

one of the prettiest musical settings for the great Psalm - out of all the beautiful music for this text - this is my favourite setting.

I always sung this hymn to that tune especially to my daughter after we found out she’d profuse brain damage as a baby, my husband would laugh saying I got the wrong tune. MY Daughter is now 37 & lives independently despite her left side crippled & on the Autism spectrum!

Brother James’ Air (Psalm 23) The Lord's my Shepherd, I'll not want. He makes me down to lie In pastures green; He leadeth me The quiet waters by. He leadeth me, He leadeth me, the quiet waters by. My soul He doth restore again; And me to walk doth make Within the paths of righteousness, Ee'n for His own Name's sake. Within the paths of righteousness, Ee'n for His own Name's sake. Yea, though I pass through shadows death, Yet will I fear no ill; For Thou art with me; and Thy rod And staff me comfort still. Thy rod and staff they comfort still They comfort still. My table Thou hast furnishd In presence of my foes; My head with oil thou dost anoint, And my cup overflows. My head thou dost with oil anoint, And my cup overflows. Goodness and mercy all my days Will surely follow me; And in my father's heart alway My dwelling place shall be.

Hymn? I thought this was a metrical psalm to the tune Marosa after James Leith Macbeth Bain. Fine name - they don't come like that any more. We do a 4-part arrangement after Gordon Jacob as an occasional anthem. It does actually exist in hymn form, tho'.

Playing this in Band. It sounds way better in the choral setting, though.
