Thank you very much Terry, I had this problem with my Brother MFC - J5335DW although I didn't have a spare chip to swap over, I did manage to change the battery in the offending cartridge. Your instructions were so comprehensive and clear, accompanied with your excellent video you saved me a small fortune as I was on the verge of purchasing a new printer. I've subscribed and look forward to watching further videos. Thanks again.

Thanks for this. Looks like it may still be a thing with the MFC-J497DW. Swapped out the chip with a new one and it's working now, and I have turned off auto-power-off to prevent it from happening again in the future.

I have the same Brother J5330 that uses the LC3019. Auto update is OFF, but still from time to time it does not want to read the compatible ink cartridges I bought. you explained here about changing the chip etc. BUT it there a way to fix that problem?

Terry your video regarding this model printer (which I own) was very helpful. I had exactly the problem you described with the Magenta cartridge not been detected. I had been using good quality generic ink and all of a sudden printer is telling me Magenta needs to be replaced, odd thing the cartridge was 1/2 way full, nevertheless I tried two more new ones and printer would not detect them as well. I took your advise and ended up buying an original from Staples, I just installed it and problem solved. I guess I will have to use original for Magenta and use up the other colors (generic) until is time to replace them with originals. Thankyou very much for this video.

This is a sign your "good ink" is clogging the printhead and restricting ink flow, I see this daily in printers where the magenta is about to or has clogged and it is always the 1st colour to clog followed by blue. Watch this video to see what is "bad ink" kzbin.info/www/bejne/oafQgX6wqtSCg7c

Go the same printer, haven’t used it for ages and don’t have the old printer cartridge. Should I just buy a new one?

Thanks for the video. I have the same problem with yellow ink of my printer brother mfc j4420DW. Unfortunately I don’t think it is possible to swap the chip on this model. Recently I bought new yellow ink which the printer recognized but wasn’t printing nothing in yellow color at all and now I have again the message they the printer isn’t recognizing the ink cartridge. Worst of all is that this printer model doesn’t let you print block&white nor copy any document cause there’s isn’t any color ink available which is just ridiculous... tell me please if there’s any way to contact you by email to help with the printer since I live in Europe.

My Brother MFC-J805DW is having this problem. I've replaced the Black and White cartridge with a King Jet Ink Cartridge which has a rather large chip on the top. Got the message "!B&W print only" After trying multiple things, I changed that cartridge out for a new Brother LC3033BK XXL cartridge...same darn message. I looked at retrieving from the factory sent now reading empty cartridge the chip from the top. It doesn't come off. I'm really stuck. Any ideas!

Terry, fine videos. I thought you had cracked it for me but I am using an MFC-J6920DW which wants LC-123/LC-125XL/LC-129XL cartridges. The Sleep timer hack does not apply (no battery and it does not have an 'off') option. Something odd has happened; I have been using non-standard cartridges for ages with no problem. Recently swapped Cyan and Yellow but no dice. I have reset all setting but no change. It is so long since I had Brother cartridges that I have no old chips to swap out. Unless you have any ideas, I am going to have to buy some liquid gold. Any help appreciated. (Apologies if you have done a video on this already. I looked but did not find one) TIA

You generally don't get problems with the chips on the 6920 series. If your machine is rejecting your cartridges you may have the wrong country code chips. For example you have LC 129 whilst in Australia we use lc139 it is very easy for the manufacturer to make LC 139 chips and put them on l c129 cartridges by mistake

@@TerryJonesPrinterRepairs thanks for your prompt reply. Another variable? I will check but I think I am beaten on this one

For interest (!?) the cartridges NOT being accepted are B-123C(121C) and B-123Y(121Y). These are of the four that the printer needs. The other two - B-123M(121M) and B-123BK(121BK) are working happily. Same manufacturer.
