You and your sisters probably had the mental capacity and were cognitively able to help. These individuals look to have a mental deficit. Their mother should have never been left in their “care”. Had she been in another country where elder health care is a right and not a privilege, she would have had the care she deserved. In the US, it’s so hard to get help unless the family can either do it own their own (not everyone can do this); or unless the family is financially inclined to do so (not everyone is). These people were probably on the lower socio-economic scale with low IQs, so it was going to be an automatic fail for their mother by everyone.

@@Mrs.Bigapple I think the mother was wrong for entrapping her adult children to take care of her when all 3 should have been living in nursing homes. Those two defendants do not look qualified to take care of anyone. Something so simple as bathing someone is more difficult and requires lots of physical strength than you think when the person cannot walk and what is the point if the person fights with you when you try to bathe them and continues doing number 1s and 2s on themselves all day? That is why real nurses and medical assistants at nursing homes are better suited for the job.

@@cjking4511But since the mom was nonverbal, it was the families’ responsibility to get help-speak to social workers and other agents to put home care in place. My mother and I had taken care of my brother for the last 5 years until his passing in May. He was also nonverbal, unable to walk and had a horrific cancer that was literally eating away his throat. We took 24/7 care of him because he had a tracheotomy, feeding tube, needing meds throughout the day…Even with home hospice care, nurse visits were limited. We could get a home attendant to come sit with him and bathe him, but they could not attend to his other necessary needs. Being a caregiver is beyond difficult, but your driving force is love. We did everything for him-all the doctors were amazed at how well cared for he was and that he never had bedsores-as soon as his skin looked irritated, we took action to prevent them. There were three family members that could have done the bare minimum of keeping their mother clean, and getting the proper care for her through government agencies that can connect you to the services. Yes, it requires research, it’s time consuming and frustrating, but you need to persevere until it gets done. Your family member deserves it!

Right! The defense attorney is trying to say they didn't know how bad her condition was because she wasn't really verbal or showing signs of pain. So it didn't seem abnormal that the bone was sticking out at her ankle and the skin was dark. She was very light skinned in her pictures so that significant of a color change would have been obvious. I think the children have some sort of disability (not saying mentally incompetent) and the father was basically left to care for everyone while still working. Just awful! Sounds like both parents needed to be in a facility and the adult "children" needed some oversight by a social worker.

Of course it’s great if they can and have the time to help, but if they choose not to, it’s not fair to hold it against them. Taking care of elderly parents can take a toll on whomever the caregiver is and stop their life. The defendants definitely should’ve found some other way to help (since they were around anyway) because the condition of her body was horrible.

This is TRAGIC,,, but you can see and especially the young man , that he’s mentally ill! Awful awful what’s happened to the mother,,, but her children obviously have mental issues,, and could not cope,, also I wonder if the mother put in LITTLE effort to socialise and teach these kids about how to be clean and look after themselves 🤔🤔 SOMETHING HAS GONE REALLY WRONG WITH THEIR UPBRINGING……. Plus obviously they didn’t get appropriate help from authorities…Sad situation all round ugh 🤦🏽‍♀️

That wouldn't do anything. There is police bodycam footage here on KZbin of an elderly man who is threatening to kill his wife because he can't handle being her caretaker anymore. The police just laugh and tell them to get along. The bedridden wife begs the officers not to leave because he has threatened to kill her. They brush her off and leave anyway. Later on that day, he kills her.

Before my Mommy passed. Her bestfriend since 5 years old and I were fortunate to care for her. My Mommy was 64, her friend, 66, me, 26. We cared for her from sun up to sun down. I didn't have any experience for caring for someone who is dying. Especially my Mommy, that I was very close to. It was heartbreaking. But I did it. I'm so thankful for her friend for being there for us. And Mommy was so grateful. How can these grown ssa ADULTS see their mother suffer this way??? I feel so sad for the mother.

You don’t need to have medical training to know that you shouldn’t let anyone lay in their own feces and urine. Their mother gave birth to them, had sleepless nights, changed their diapers, cared for them when they were sick etc for years, but when time came for them to take care of their mother, they simply didn’t want to. It’s absolutely heartbreaking to hear the condition poor Sheila was in, she must’ve been in agony and to know that your own kids are the ones who are treating you this way, must’ve been even worse

God only knows, what happened to that woman, how much she was abused, by her kids. Her leg didn't break itself. In many countries, the elderly are revered, and well taken care of. How do you know what's going on w the person "released to your care" upon being discharged from skilled nursing? 1. Note overall condition of patient upon arrival at home. 2. Note condition of patient each time bathed (to include bed bath). 3. Note condition/hygiene level of patient each time changed after incontinence. 4. Note condition of patient each time re-positioned (in order to prevent pressure ulcers). Note patient's vitals and ADL's w daily chart notes. 5. They release people home too soon sometimes. I know room has to be made but I couldn’t believe they sent my uncle home when they did. He died a couple weeks later after a fall from being too weak and unstable. Not mobile. And there were stairs in his apt. It was so hard to know what to do. He only lasted a night before being back in the hospital. I couldn’t put these two in jail. Caretaking at that level is not easy. This is what we poor and middle class are going to face. The situation was horrific, but APS was already involved several years ago, and apparently did no follow up after 1 appointment was cancelled ( we don't know why) . Apparently the father/ husband was there too and he made the decisions for everyone in the home. Both of the adult " children" charged seem to have special needs ( I hope a thorough evaluation is done!!!), and if they grew up in filth and squalor ( as reported by the third sibling) they would think it's just somehow " normal", especially if they lacked "adult" mental capacity themselves. They were definitely not equipped to care for such a medically challenged person, even if it was their mom. A wellness/ welfare check from a visiting nurse or APS could have prevented this tragedy.

I understand not having the money or the insurance to care for your incapacitated loved one. My mama contracted sepsis from a UTI in Dec 2019. I had no idea that sepsis would make you crazy. I just thought she was upset with me and my dad. When I took her to the hospital finally she was in bad shape. When the hospital put her out she was not fully over the sepsis. It was bad. She didn’t have proper insurance to get home visits so it was on us to bathe and change my mama. I lived about 30 minutes from her. My dad was an addict and was not gonna get his hands dirty. So he called me and I would go and change her. Just to get home and have him call me again. There was about a three week period I didn’t bathe myself because I was taking care of my mother and then doing my job. It’s exhausting. But you don’t give up on them. If they have urinated and defecated on themselves you don’t make them lay in it!!!

I married when I was 25 and moved into my own home with my husband - but I still continued to care for my mother (whilst raising two children and also working myself) until the day she passed away, 7 years ago - I was 53 - she was 78. I would never, ever have let my mother get in the condition that this poor lady was left in - whether she wanted the help or not! You can not blame lack of medical knowledge for basic cleanliness. Should all lose theirs license and some prison time. For the brother and sister: abuse, neglect, and abandonment, plus for financial gain. Life in prison for both.
