Joe Deninzon is in a progressive rock band called "Stratospheerius" and is now the violinist for "Kansas." Alex Skolnick is best known for being the guitarist for "Testament." At ProgStock that year "Brand X" had to cancel because John Goodsall was sick. Joe Deninzon was asked to fill in for the "Brand X" set. I played the set before and Alex was playing after. Joe emailed Alex and I asking if we could play. We decided on "Spain", a jazz tune everyone already knew. We did not have an opportunity to rehearse and Alex and I met for the first time on stage for the performance.

Thank you so much for the added context, Rachel, and thanks also for your comment! Honored. You all did fantastic.

It seemed like everyone played perfectly, even without a rehearsal. Would a rehearsal have made any difference?

@@DavidMichaelKalman Hey David, might have been different, not necessarily better. What I love is the spontaneity, and how because it is unrehearsed they really have to listen to each other. That is the beauty of jazz.

The original is sublime, I would recommend giving it a whirl. Not only did it include Chick Corea, but Stanley Clarke on bass, Airto Moreira, Flora Purim and the amazing Joe Farrell taking the flute solo. This version is actually pretty faithful. The most successful jazz to rock piece I can think of is The Butterfield Blues Band doing a great version of the Cannonball Adderley classic "Work Song." So much more to explore if you go down this road.

Great! Hermosa pieza! No la conocía. La primera parte, seguramente con los arreglos pertinentes, sí me es muy conocida, es el segundo moviendo, Adagio, del Concierto de Aranjuez. Hasta pronto.

It is a true pleasure to enjoy this presentation of wonderful musicianship as demonstrated by Rachel Flowers, Joe Deninzon and Alex Skolnick. Thank you, Glenn and Adrian, for sacrificing views of your channel for the sake of the art of music.

Great version of Spain. I saw RTF with Stanley Clarke when I was a teenager, mind blowing. Glad this next gen are keeping it alive!.

As a veteran of watching many jazz band performances first for my daughter, and now for my granddaughter, I can appreciate the music, though it isn't something I would chase after. I can picture my son with his violin, but he sure didn't play it like that! Thanks for bringing a different flavor to Rock Talk!

How beautiful to hear Rachael. I didn't know her skill with the transverse flute. I think his skill on the piano has helped him with his fingering. I discovered her a few years ago performing a wide repertoire of Keith Emerson (ELP)

ProgStock Festival happens every year in October, but has now moved to Rutherford, NJ, at the Williams Center. Rachel performs there every year. ProgStock 2024 is October 18-20, 2024.
