Thank you, Greg, for the clearest and best-explained lesson on this bass line that I have found on KZbin so far, and I have looked at quite a few! And the free pdf is invaluable, really generous of you to provide that, very helpful indeed.

I discovered this just now. I've been playing this in the band. I've busked it so far, using G scale and adding where I can. This will enable me to add more! Hipefully I'll progress from passable to good!Thank you.

Hi Greg, the rhythm in bar 32 is played as eight D - 1/8 rest - 1/8 D-F-D - 1/4 F#, but it notated 1/8 D - 1/8 rest - 1/8 D - 1/8 rest - 1/8 F-D - 1/4 F#. (all on the beat). 🙃

It's of those like Summer of 69 that would be played regularly but I enjoy it. Anything that gets people dancing is fine with me.

Great song and video Greg. With a little work a person can start playing it and then start working on some of the finer points. Great song for getting people going that want to play the bass guitar.

Many thanks Greg!! Superb work. This is a great tune as many others from Van Morrison. Been learning guitar for more than 20years and discovering the amazing world of bass now…The problem with this song is that the vast majority of guitar players just go down the simple route and play the chords, and only a few really work out the amazing melodic subtleties and double stops played throughout the whole studio version…not just the intro…I hate when the guitarrist is asked to play this song and goes “sure, that´s an easy one…”…well, we all know how arrogant guitarrists can be…😂😂😂

Glad you like it Fede and brilliant that you have discovered the bass after playing guitar for so many years! Yes, it is one of those tunes that needs to be played correctly by the whole band!

I struggle to sing and play bass at same time and find this a great one to practice doing that with its sha la la section. I like cover bands that use many voices. You can even imitate horns or keyboards to fill out mix.
@GregsBassShed Жыл бұрын
Sounds great Gareth, I love lots of harmonies from the band too. I sometimes sing backing vocals, not when there is a syncopated bass line though as that makes things tricky!
@garethevans2650 Жыл бұрын
I've noticed lead vocal bassists (Lynott Sting McCartney) seem to play simpler rhythms when singing. The Sha La La section here sounds better to me with unsycopated bass plus extra voices. It reminds me a bit of the rhythm change in So Lonely.

Another really cool lesson👍 Like yourself played this a few times, kept it simple and followed the progression, but when everyone’s up dancing...who really cares.🥳 Big fan of Van Morrison and love playing “Baby please don’t go” when The Man was fronting Them. For a great bass play for a beginner bassist is “Days like this” by VM. It’s a great little song, steady rhythm and a bouncy bass line. Keep groovin Bryn

I have found that in the bass solo, the long succession of G's at the beginning makes dancers look up and wonder, and impatient lead guitarists want to jump in. So I play the verse riff throughout. Second time, wIth this variation on the "high G" bar: G B GC# D...

Greg, I'm new to all this what does the 10 mean on br 51? I don't see you move all the way down to fret 10. Is there a trick here?
@GregsBassShed11 ай бұрын
Hi, that was my mistake! You can play G on the 10th fret of the A string but you would play it on the 5th fret of the D string for this bar. Well spotted though and good to check!
