Companion shooting video on InRangeTV:
• Video
We have a new Brownells BRN-10A reproduction AR-10 to take a look at today, hot off the production line! Brownells is making both AR-15 and AR-10 rifles in their "Retro" reproduction line, but this is definitely the more interesting one to me. You can piece together a good retro AR-15, but the AR-10 platform has until now been very limited in retro options.
In today's video, I am comparing the BRN-10A to a semiauto conversion of an original Portuguese AR-10. This allows some good comparisons, but it is also of limited use, because Brownells has chosen to reproduce the cleaner lines of the early Cuban-pattern AR-10. Details like the muzzle, handguards, charging handle, and front sight block are quite different between early and late original AR-10s, but the comparison with a late Portuguese one does allow us to see how much detail did go into properly replicating many of the other elements.
Overall, I am quite impressed by Brownells' new rifle. There is room for improvement, and my biggest complaint is the feel of the handguards - but they certainly do look right. Incidentally, after I finished filming I spoke with the company, and was told that a more accurate pistol grip is in development, as are waffle-pattern mags. Those will be nice improvements added to guns as they start shipping. The BRN-10 is definitely a much better reproduction than the old Armalite AR-10B rifles, and a heck of a lot less expensive than finding a semiauto conversion of an original one!
KZbin does not allow links to firearms manufacturers in video descriptions, but I am sure you can figure out how to find Brownells.

The original AR-10 used a phenolic resin composite for the furniture. The same material was widely used in printed circuit boards for most of the 2nd half of the 20th century. I've worked on God knows how many of those boards over the years and I'm certain after emptying a clip or two in an original AR-10 I'd recognise the familiar odor of overheated phenolic resin.

One note on that ar10 barrel bursting Stoner was against using that type of barrel and tight after it burst he built new solid barrel to complete the trials. And the ammunition used in it's testing faulty high pressure AP ammunition used to intentionally sabotage the rifles performance. If anyone is interested in more AR specific information there's another great channel called small arms solutions he worked at Colt for a long time. Thanks for the great videos Ian lots of knowledge.

Ian said the original bbl delaminated. I'm not sure just what he meant by that. I'm looking at Springfield Armory's “Metallurgical Examination of One Barrel Cal. 30 AR-10, that ruptured in firing test at Springfield Armory”. Dated 28 May 1957. Six pages of technical examination. The bottom line was a sulfur stringer in the liner precipitated the accident. The failure didn't have anything to do with the aluminum/steel construction.

On the topic of the original AR-10, giving the production license to AI might've been the biggest mistake that ArmaLite and Fairchild made. They could never make enough of these guns to satisfy some of the larger countries that wanted it. Germany, Italy, and France among others _really_ _really_ liked this gun, but AI took too damn long to make them and so interest faded in favor of the production-ready FAL and other available designs. Such a shame, what could've been...
@RyTrapp0
@RyTrapp0 6 жыл бұрын
Not to mention some of the absolutely AWFUL choices that ArmaLite made early on that completely fucked MANY potential opportunities(re: US trials) that this piece could've had. In fact, it's kind of incredible that a collection of people with a concept so far ahead of its time could possibly be such absolutely atrocious businessmen. Should've left the radical ideas to the engineering staff, not the pencil pushers...

Visionaries aren't good businessmen as a rule of thumb. For example Walt Disney pushed the boundaries of animation far above the other studios but have crappy business acumen so bad he bankrupted the first company, got cheated over his first successful character by his distributor and got into a abusive business relationship with a gangster producer (and patent thief) before he got into the black with Snow White.

Sadly the ar10 had a major issue. It was prone to fouling related malfunctions. The system used within the rifle is your standard DI assembly. Obviously the ar15 was a scaled down replica, in fact the down scaling reduced fouling and improved reliability vastly. Downside being that you lost range, and energy with the smaller weapon. I do however believe that had the ar10 had a steel barrel, that the m14 never would've seen service. The ar10 system is simply better sealed, modular capable, and able to produce greater accuracy than most battle rifles, even today they're still a wonderful system. M110/sr25 prove the facts that I'm certain other countries who used them found out. Accurate. Durable. And when tuned right, a sweet shooter in all required fields.

A slight note on Artillerie Inrichtingen. It wasn't so much as a company, but a state-owned-and-run enterprise (founded by Dutch Stadtholder William III of England), until it's privatisation in the 70s (split into an armaments manufacturer Eurometaal (later sold to Rheinmetall) and the still existing (and possibly oldest still existing) machine tool manufacturer Hembrug Machine Tools).

I'm a custom knife maker. The material you are describing for the original furniture sounds like Micarta. This material was developed by Westinghouse around 1910. Originally, it was developed as an electrical insulator, and later as counter top material. It is a phenolic resin on a substrate of paper, linen or canvas. It is still used today as a knife handle material, popularized by the late great Bob Loveless. In flat sections it is extremely strong and is considered one of the most durable knife handle materials. I've used it on scores of knives without a failure. How it would hold up in the thin, molded construction of a handguard? I can't say.
@zedoktor979

The handguard being hollow lended itself to flexing and cracking. A service rifle foregrip goes through hell.
@kmcgovern2012
@kmcgovern2012 6 жыл бұрын
Totally agree. Scales on a knife aren't subjected to any flex (If it's built right). Micarta is very impact resistant, so pretty ideal for a knife handle material. It is pretty heavy, which I'm sure is why the designer would make it thin for such a big section on a rifle stock.

That being said, I absolutely adore my IWI Jericho 941 (i did get the medium version, however) and have never regretted the buy for a single moment. The furniture would be excusable if this was at or below a grand, but with an MSRP of 1700 its just inexcusable. It looks cheap, I'm sure it feels cheap, and it lacks heat shields. I'm not a huge AR-10 fan but if they improved the furniture I'd buy one.
@USSEnterpriseA1701
@USSEnterpriseA1701 6 жыл бұрын
It's better than it looks. Yeah, they all seem to have the gap at the back to varying degrees, but the actual material used is tougher than it feels. I haven't tried abusing it, nor do I really intend to, but it is rigid enough to do it's job, while slightly flexible enough that I'm not worried about it being brittle. The gap seems to be a result of the handguards warping as they cool after being molded. Between myself and my dad (our combined collection is something of a 'joint-custody' arrangement), we tinkered around with how to make a heatshield for it and we cut up an aluminum drink can about 23 oz. in volume, ran it through a paper crimper to corrugate it, and used some type of putty epoxy to tack it in place. We only managed to put it on the back half of the bottom handguard, partly because the back half was all that was really necessary and partly because there was a clearance issue with the gas tube on the top. After mentioning our tinkering on the Retro forum section of AR-15.com, someone suggested using aluminum foil tape, the sort often used for HVAC duct work. I added the tape to the top handgaurd (because now for our rifle it does make a difference) and that seems to be the solution. The pop can heatshield was a fun project, and a learning experience, but if I had to do it again, I'd just use the tape for top and bottom because it's just plain easier and just as effective. Really all you need from a heatshield is a reflective surface to bounce the infrared heat off of, rather than an insulating air gap. Additionally, there are things you can do about the color of the handguards if it doesn't suit your taste. You can always paint them, I've seen some pretty convincing paint jobs to replicate the mottled Bakelite look. If a solid color is what you're after, I've seen Rustoleum Kona Brown recommended by some of the Retro forum tinkerers as well.

Nice review Ian, yeah I think that furniture would have looked better if it were darker, more like that Portuguese or the Cuban variant. Chris Bartocci at Small Arms Solutions has several videos about the AR10, IIRC he said that Knight's Armament had Karl Lewis, from LMT, involved in the machining of the SR25. I own an MWS from LMT and seems to be of that lineage.

SR25/DPMS LR308, and even modern "Armalite" AR10A/B use AR15 fire control. 100% interchangeable. When I was deciding which pattern to buy, I did a lot of research on what parts are interchangeable with what. I think I made a post on r/AR10 with a list of all the parts that interchange with what and what does not with all "AR10" style rifles including HK417/MR762, SR25, LR308, LAR-8, SIG762, AR10A/B, MP10.

the resin laminate is commonly referred to as micarta. Micarta is the Westinghouse name brand (ie Kleenex) It is also extensively used for knife handles by Randall Made Knives. It was basically superceeded by G10 materiels. Neat side note though. Larry vickers designed a special edition Randall made Knife known as the Vickers Subdued Tactical, which features a bead blasted blade finish and black Micarta handle. they are very rare but next time you talk with Mr Vickers check one out!

Which contract, to which nation, included wooden butt stocks, pistol grips, and forearms? I ask because a friend of mine purchased two AR-10s back in the 1970s for what would today be called "chump change". He purchased both rifles as "South African Models" but between us, we have always thought of them as "Spanish" or "European" because of the three prong "flash hiders" and the wooden "furniture"....Both rifles were purchased through the old "Interarms" firm and utilize FN magazines. These are, by 21st century standards at least, pretty damn heavy as "assault rifles" are concerned. Thanks for yet again, an excellent video! Keep 'em comin'!!!!

Thanks for the kind and timely reply to a question, on originality, that the owner and later I puzzled over for years. As you can probably imagine there is a jungle of proof (?) marks all over the place on his two rifles but despite the various and sundry print and online research sources that we could find, none of the photos were, to our eyes at least, clear enough to make the material used for stocks, forearms, and pistol grips identifiable. Some, if not most, of the photos we had access to, made it appear that "grain" was visible while others were clear as day plastic or perhaps fiberglass. I sent a text to my friend upon finding your response to my question referring him to your video. Thanks again for the response!

It is actually kinda surprising that any AR model got adopted given how opposed the brass was to changing company at the time, independent of the quality of the gun.
@TodayLifeIsGoood
@TodayLifeIsGoood 6 жыл бұрын
That seems to be a problem in general when a very large company (like a nation state) is giving out contracts. At some point the people making the decisions may profit more personally when they make a decision that is sub-optimal for the company but good for them. It is really not reserved for states and guns. -.-

Then what does the 20% actually mean? Given enough time, dust, sand, mud and/or humitity, it is only a question of time until a gun, no matter how good, malfunctions.

from what I've read basically ARPA bought a bunch because the vietnamese were too small and then it snowballed from there. so in a world where we didn't go into vietnam we probably would have ended up with something like an SA80 built from an arsenal project with too many requirements

Makes me curios how the auto industry handled steel/iron bore inserts with aluminum blocks considering those things get substantially hot for a far longer duration I wondered if a ribbed aluminum barrel would've done it or if the automotive lubrication/cooling system is the reason it works for cars but not guns.
@JG54206
@JG54206 2 жыл бұрын
Most likely the cooling system. A liquid cooling system will keep the engine around 210* F. The barrel will get much hotter than that under rapid firing. The barrel could be around 100* surface temp if not more if the gun were left out in the hot sun in a desert for a while. Within one or two rapidly fired magazines that would be much much hotter.

@RyTrapp0
@RyTrapp0 6 жыл бұрын
@@barrag3463 I don't think he misunderstood that. Rather it seems that quite a few people want a reproduction AR10 - as long as it's as they see it in their head instead of as history saw it. The BRN has that furniture specifically because it's a reproduction, it's intended to replicate the historically accurate visual design in a brand new product, not be a brand new gun "influenced by" the AR10. If you don't like that rather disgusting brown, well that's something that you're going to have to take up with ArmaLite(though I think you're probably a little late at this point). As mentioned, if you really want an AR10 - but in an inauthentic style that you prefer - then don't waste the money on this rather exquisite reproduction, get the cheaper DPMS(which is basically half the price, the savings from which you can invest into whatever furniture that you would want to put on it - you don't have to keep the rails on the DPMS anymore than you have to keep the gross brown stuff on the BRN) and customize that. Unless you have money to burn and really are desperate for EXACTLY this Brownells but with different furniture, in which case no one is stopping you...
