No, a cruise is not a type of ship. A cruise is a type of journey one can take on a ship (typically a cruise ship),. 'Cruise' and 'ferry' are not synonyms.

My favorite part about this scene too is that Joker is talking to batman upside down. He is literally the reverse of Batman who is right-side up, but there's more to it. Batman is in a building that is under construction, it's being built; while Joker is against the city lights, what is there. Joker was right because his ideas were built from reality, but he's upside down so a twisted reality. Batman's ideas are idealism, it's the world he is trying to build, but was hijacked by Joker for a hostage situation. Just a small thing that maybe I am reading into a bit more, as this was also my favorite movie and scene.

Read into film/TV however you want. I’m sick and tired of people who say, “you’re reading too much into it” because, at the end of the day, film/TV is subjective and we can make our own conclusions with the knowledge we have. Continue analysing, no matter what anyone says.

@@oliversvoice4383 this. Even if ur reading DEEP into literature, movies, etc, it’s not a bad thing. It just shows how lovely the human mind is and how we can interpret and think of so many different things based on a short part of a scene. Like my English teachers used to tell me, (for freehand essays on writing strategy’s in films and such) it’s not all about the point, but the evidence you use to support it.

@@kingofgrim4761 I had this literature teacher that knew I loved games and she said to me "games will never be art like reading a book". I think games are art by their own, I never read books but definitely understand those who do. Games like Undertale, Last of Us, Uncharted and my favourite Life is Strange. Masterpieces of games right here, but again like movies and books its subjective. One thing I love about these games is diving deep into their universes, they just so fascinating for me. They hit you in different places everytime just like watching a movie or reading a book. Franchises like Batman movies and others are like icebergs. What you see on screen is only top of the iceberg, but deep below is whole lot bigger than we think, I admire the people who dig into that. Everyone are allowed to love or hate a movie, no need to criticise them for that, however I enjoy movies more with hidden messages here and there and things that aren't clear first time around.

Joker claims not to be a schemer but he turned out to be the greatest schemer of all.
@farrex0
@farrex0 2 жыл бұрын
Perhaps the most effective way to scheme is to convince everyone you aren't. Take Captain Jack Sparrow for example, perhaps the joker takes a similar approach where he does scheme a lot, while giving him room for improvisation. But creates this persona of being a care free person and tells others he doesn't scheme to make them lower their guard, think less of him. Because the more they underestimate him, the easier for him to manipulate and scheme.

''Appear weak when you are strong, and strong when you are weak.'' - The art of war by Sun Tsu. The Joker needed everyone to underestimate him in many ways, the mob, the police, Dent and even Batman could of avoided a lot of the what happens if they had a rough understanding on how dangerous the Joker was. Batman probably could of stop joker before the start of the dark knight (was told about him at the end of batman begins) if he knew how dangerous he was. he was only able to figure out how to stop Joker thanks to Alfred giving him words of wisdom throughout the film, giving Bruce strength and a better understanding on how to take on Joker.

The "One bad day" ideology is something I've seen mirrored by every modern joker, yet this is the only joker where we have no idea what happened to him because he changes his origin on a whim. I feel it's possible that he himself is the exception, he NEVER had a bad day, and simply does these things as a joke, maybe out of boredom.

It's quite heavily implied that this Joker was a war veteran. His expertise with bombs, how he blends in with the police, he mentions something about children being blown up as "part of the plan". My theory is that he snapped after realising the bullshit of the American system, probably after being homeless. He saw it all as a joke.
@royliber3824

@@Matt90Nine Maybe he watched a lot of news, and pretty much found different ways to train and become bomb expert. He could have been influenced by terrorist group, hence why he is good in hand-to-hand combat and knows how to use explosives. Also the fact that he knows how to use human as shields shows that its probably ain't ex-military experience that tought him how to do it. Also that could explain why he is not recognizeable by anyone, he was never part of the system in any way and no one can identify him. I don't think my theory is canon in any way but would make more sense how he knows stuff.

@@Matt90Nine That's why I HATE Injustice for what they did to Superman. It's the same "one bad day" schtick with fucking Superman of all people and it works? Lmfao okay. Part of the trend of "bad superman" characters lately, except he's actually supposed to have started out as the same Superman we all know. Hot garbage, really, and an abominable mistreatment of the character. Superman in Kingdom Come was done infinitely better. He lost Lois and Metropolis in much the same way except to someone that wasn't Joker, and he didn't become a terrible person. He just reclused to the Fortress and embraced being an alien to the world.

One of my favorite villains is Zod from Man of Steel. He represents the anti-theme of Purpose, his one main purpose given to him is to save Krypton and he's dangerously motivated to fulfill his purpose. He doesn't try to destroy the earth like a generic bad guy he tries to restore his home, he does whatever it takes to get what he wants which may not be relatable but it's understandable and I respect it.

They really botched MoS because they had some really interesting ideas that they could have fleshed out more to make Zod a really compelling antagonist. Although, to do that you really have to ignore the really obvious compromise that they should have easily reached by terraforming Mars instead of killing billions of people terraforming Earth. Also, they did not have to portray Pa Kent as such an asshole. The whole DCU is a mess.

you know what I always disliked about this scene? everyone assumes the joker is telling the truth. think about it, the entire movie, his schtick is that he tells people one thing, they either ignore him, or think they're smarter than him, and fall right into his game. the Joker probably didn't rig the remotes to blow the other ferries up. he probably rigged the remotes to blow their own ferries up.
@KamilDevonish
@KamilDevonish 2 жыл бұрын
This x 1000. He's so far beyond any definition of sanism that deception is a compulsion that he probably can't even control. And despite the power of the ferry scene, the pinnacle moment of the movie is the race to save Dent and Rachel. It is in that one key moment that the Batman takes Joker at face value - he believes that Rachel is where the Joker says she is and races there. But a more experienced Batman or maybe a more controlled (less emotional) Batman would have known that the only thing that could be more of a perverse pleasure than getting to the hostage too late would be getting to where you expected to find one hostage and then instead finding the other. The Joker's mind is twisted inside and out - Dent is where Rachel is, hostages dressed up as criminals, and he's an innocent agent of random chaos who doesn't have plans while scheming the biggest ploy of all. The only way that there could be any consistency in his inconsistency would be if those detonators were self-detonators.

Brilliant dissection Mauricio! I can see those glasses of yours have given you extra clarity regarding your vision, and it was an excellent decision to sleep with them on. Major kudos to you, for your smarts dude! Indeed, The Dark Knight is brilliant for adding an exploration of ideas examining the human condition onto its already, expertly, exhilarating action and its epic, adrenaline rush of a film. This film hasn't lost the sense of awe one has for its superb achievements in filmmaking since it came out, and I don't think it ever will. I've seen a small number of people say Two-Face was shoehorned into the film, and that's crazy to me! He was an integral piece of the movie, allowing the Joker's ideology to be achieved in a dramatic and tragic way. The film sets up Harvey's innate ruthless side expertly, created and driven by his powerful love of Rachel, when he interrogates the mental patient working for the Joker in an alley (that guy has been in so many superhero things by the way! - He's in the Ant Man films too, plus The Suicide Squad, and is a villain in The Flash TV series). Yes, the coin had "heads" on both sides, but we can clearly see he's unhinged, and that characteristic, combined with the trauma of losing Rachel and the agony experienced from refusing medication while being in a state that makes him want to physically feel the pain of the emotional pain and upset he's feeling, turns him into an understandably, mentally unbalanced monster. Anyway, to conclude, make sure you get those glasses windscreen wipers Mauricio! We wouldn't want to take for granted, a real-life infinity stone now, would we? Love your work and technology dude! 🙂

I don't think Joaquin really "topped" Heath, but he did a bloody brillant version of The Joker. Each one of them showed their sides of the coin and I absoloutely love em both equally. You can see they digged into the origin of the Joker. Heath pretty much locked himself in a hotel room and tried to get into character while Joaquin lost a lot of weight to what for him seemed like the perfect fit for his Joker. They played the same character pefrect in their own way and I was astonished when I saw the movie The Joker. For both of them it took one bad day to become what they eventually became and even tho they were playing Joker different from each other, they both kinda felt similar in a way that its kinda hard to describe.

My personal pick is actually still in this movie. And it’s the scene at the complete end even after this scene. It’s the scene where two face has Gordon’s family. His monologue isn’t a basic evil one, it’s sad and sinister at the same time. I used to watch this movie a lot when I was younger, I liked it because it was a super hero movie and it’s was cool and then I just kinda stopped watching it for a while. Fast forward 2 years and I’m going to watch it for the first time in a while we get to the scene in question. When two face shoots Batman and gordon believes that he’s truly helpless when two face points the gun at himself the theme in the back is just emotional.

My theory: the detonator on each boat would blow up the bomb on the SAME boat. One bad day, one little push. He said he took "Gotham's white knight and brought him down to our level." He wants to show that anyone and everyone is capable. ... and when both boats blow up, well, we all get the punchline of the joke. The reality of human nature is exposed, and the battle for Gotham's soul is won. Seriously though... does anyone believe that no one on the boat would have pushed the button? As unbelievable as many aspects of a "superhero" movie are, that was what broke my immersion and I couldn't suspend disbelief.

I would highly recommend you see Batman Begins first, and then see The Dark Knight and The Dark Knight Rises. If you haven't seen the trilogy, do it proper and see the whole thing. You won't regret it. They're all very good movies.

I like as well that the ramifications of this is felt throughout TDKR with Gordon conflicted about what they covered up then Bane reading it out at the prison. He is the winner in that movie.

I just wish Heath Ledger had been around for one last hurrah in The Dark Knight Rises. Because he died so young, we were robbed of an amazing finale to this trilogy.

Heath ledger was the greatest thing to happen to joker since Mark Hamill. It was such an incredible injustice the man had to be taken from us so soon.

5:32 I would have written: "No, I came back to save (or die FOR) my city." Maybe a bit weak, but in the context of The Dark Knight Rises it really fits. Bruce starts the movie hiding in his mansion, one can actually say he retired after he took blame for Harvey's crimes. By the end of the movie he comes out of the shadows (also literally) to fight for Gotham in daylight.

I would say even the ferry scenes reveal Joker as the 'winner' of the film. There are plenty of people on both boats who were ready to murder people they didn't know but just didn't have the guts to follow through.

The main reason why I love Heath Ledger’s joker so much is because he actually beat the hero. In the end the joker won and we feel the effects of his victory over Batman even into the next movie where Bruce has to retire as batman. It’s one of the few movies were a villain legitimately beats hero in a lasting way, with out either of them dying.

I think it was understated in this video, but the fact that one of the ferries wasn’t “innocents” but instead a prison ferry full of criminals is an incredibly important factor in how the Joker intended to manipulate both ferries to want to blow up the other to save themselves. The boat with civilians on it have a huge argument about whether or not the prisoners on the other boat have “had their chance” and whether or not it’s a matter of time before they’re blown up by an unknown psychopath that gets his hands on the prison boat trigger. It’s because of the fact that the Joker couldn’t compel either side to participate in this literal prisoner’s dilemma that makes the scene important: not just because Batman is incorruptible, but the true soul of Gotham-its people-are incorruptible too, even when pushed to their limits.
@tomnorton4277
@tomnorton4277 2 жыл бұрын
It's also worth noting that the Joker "came prepared" for the possibility that neither boat would blow up. If he was absolutely 100% convinced that at least one of them was going to explode, he wouldn't have brought his own detonator. He might have been mildly disappointed if only one of them exploded but he still would have proven that he was right. It's the only time in the entire movie where we see a flash of insecurity from the Joker. Batman finally found a weakness in the "unstoppable force" and prodded this weakness with the line "What were you trying to prove? That deep down, everyone's as ugly as you? You're alone!"

The thing about the Joker is that he never loses. He either succeeds in whatever plot he's come up with at the time or he doesn't either way, he gets to cause chaos and have fun. He either pushes Batman to such an extreme that he kills Joker, thus proving Joker right or the Joker gets locked back up in Arkham ready to come up with another plot and do it all over again. Insanity is doing that same thing over and over again and expecting a different result. Whether you want to argue if the Joker is crazy or so intelligent he can convincingly fake being crazy doesn't matter. This quote about insanity describes him perfectly.
