How to Be a Formula 1 engineer...!
This is my take on How to get a job in Formula 1 in 2022. I can't talk about EVERY job possible in this video, but in the future, I'd like to! So if there's anyone you want me to interview to help give you more information! LET ME KNOW!
One of the most important things that I want to do with this channel is to inspire the new generation of young men and women to try and find their way to Formula 1.
Now in this video. I'm going to focus on my background and my experience, but I feel like so many of the things that I've learned can help you.
I'll talk about what kind of job you want, but more importantly, I'll help you identify if you think Formula 1 engineering is the right career for you. I'll talk about some strategies for finding out what kind of jobs might suit you. And I'll also give you my top 6 most important characteristics YOU need to strive to have if you're going to be a successful Formula 1 engineer.
After spending 10 years as a Vehicle Dynamics, Trackside Performance, and Simulator Performance Engineer - I'm now making analytical and educational Formula 1 content for you. I worked for Force India and Red Bull Racing. I was even the Performance Engineer for Max Verstappen, Daniil Kvyat, Sergio Perez, and Paul Di Resta.

It’d be cool to see a video on comparing track side vs factory engineering. Pros vs cons of each, work life balance of each, etc.

@@imszervi-o-8499 I don't know how much the new price cap affects it, but I had multiple teammates from my FSAE team go into F1 and I can tell you by in large the work life balance is terrible. I'm not trying to be a Debbie downer, but you have to really, really love F1 to tolerate it and even then most people can only deal with it for short periods of time. It's by far the biggest negative IMO. If you're in college I HIGHLY recommend you join your FSAE team. If you take it seriously it will give you a decent sense of what working in F1 is like which is just ridiculous hours constantly. I also personally learned that as much as I absolutely love cars, when it became a "job" of sorts for me the enjoyment decreased over time. In retrospect I loved every minute of my FSAE experience, but I'll be honest there were times when I was beyond stressed out, sleep deprived, and my GF was pissed at me for "spending more time with the car than her" and I just wanted to quit, but I didn't because I didn't want to be the guy who let everyone down and I knew how overloaded everyone else was. I don't know first hand how F1 teams run, but I'd imagine the comradery is similar to some extent, especially mid-season. So if you can, I can't stress enough how valuable/important that whole experience was and I know with 100% certainty it's almost a soft requirement of sorts to work in F1. You don't have to have it, but it really, really helps. Especially if you do well in competition and design review. Edit: I should have watched the whole video first :-0. I agree with more or less everything Blake said.

Im not in university yet, but being an f1 engineer is really becoming my dream job for almost two years now. I really like physics and math from earlier and regularly go to competitions. I was first in my country in physics competition and almost went to world olympiad but didnt because of some stupid mistakes I made. Hopefully I will reach my goal some day.

Thank you for this video! What I’d recommend to everyone is to go get involved in any motorsport you can. There’s always going to be autocross events near you if tracks are too far like they were for me. I loved volunteering as a marshal and alongside doing vehicle dynamics for a top formula student team I hope that’ll help me get in the door of F1!

This is an awesome video. I'm starting my 2nd year in Mech E; FSAE allowed me to find how passionate I am about suspension and vehicle dynamics. It's changed how I view my coursework into how I can apply those concepts to my own design process of the car. I'd love to learn about engineers that started in U.S. motorsport (Imsa, Indy, Nascar) and transitioned into the top series such as F1 or WEC. Hearing your route to F1 showed that there is opportunity for U.S. engineering students to make it to F1.

You're so right Rachel. I hired one colleague who was more curious than me. She kept showing me stuff that wasn't her assigned project, Turns out, she was a lot smarter than me and more times than not - eventually we'd end up using what she'd learned on some other application. When she left, her replacement wasn't curious - mostly worthless. I had to carry most of the water until I retired.

I love to see the comments like this, all aspiring F1 engineers that can either be competition or future co-workers. Personally I'm still in school nearly at the end of high school which is Grade 12 here in SA. Then next year i plan to go to college and do my N1-N6 along with an optional course which goes over car components such as brakes, suspension and the engine. Fortunately there's also machining as an added bonus. So i think I'm on the right track so far as i also plan to do side projects using that knowledge gained from college and going to volunteer at karting tracks, possibly even seeing if i can learn how to tune cars from simulator based games like ACC and iRacing as means to understand how different setups affect the car's performance and characteristics. Thank you for the video, this is really useful and hopefully it helps many others in the growing industry of formula 1 and motorsport as a whole.

It is a struggle but a lot of the teams support you with sponsorship for a visa if you're coming from outside the UK. For permanent roles RedBull provides a certificate of sponsorship for a skilled worker visa and covers the cost of the process. As far as I know they'll mention it in their job listing if they provide sponsorship and if so don't hesitate to apply with a non UK degree and experience

DUUUUUUUUUUUDE!!!!!! I don't know how to phrase this but every word that came out of your mouth I felt like I resonated with. I've been trying my hardest and feel major imposter syndrome but I am not sure why. What even is my next step and how I guarantee my spot at a chance. For some more background, I am currently an ME undergrad and personally, with the most respect, I'd love to request a chat so you can answer some questions most undergrads I think would have. At least those that are interested in F1. This video opened my eyes and gave me hope but even you said it yourself, you can only fit so much into 20 minutes' worth of content. Id also likes to ask you some specific questions about R&D and talk about what it is like to work with an engine and what that entails. I don't do youtube but I promise you I'm a pretty interesting guy lol. Regardless, thank you for the video, and keep doing what you're doing, thanks!

I think yes. It just depends on if the jobs that would look for a mathematician are appealing to you.

I am a Dutch high school student and I need to pick a study now. I really want to work for f1 as an race engineer, it’s a great passion of me and I watch every race, every quali and every practice. I really want to travel with the team and I love the idea of a team trying to become better every day, win races and of course just the excitement I have when the race is going on. I am looking to study automotive engineering and join the formula student team (you just mentioned it in your video haha). I also want to do my internship by a raceteam to get more experience. Do you have any more tips or should I change something in my plans? Please let me know, thanks!

I really missed out on my dream of working in F1 because I wasn't bored in the right country. I remember planning on joining the Formula SAE team if I attended FAU to help my path to F1. But too bad, got accepted but out of state tuition was too much. Graduating civil engineering soon though. It is what it is... 🤷🏾‍♂️

If it’s meant to be it will happen. If it’s not it’s not. The world still goes on, you just need to work hard and not let time pass you by. Time is the one thing we can never get back.

Thank you for the video. I am a high school senior in Japan, and considering to study abroad. I have a few questions. 1. I am considering to take aerospace engineering, but is it possible to become a track side engineer with that degree? 2. I am in love with Ferrari’s formula 1 team and want to work there in the future, but should I go to the university in Italy rather than America?

Great video, thank you! I am grew up in San Antonio and have been living in Dallas for five years now. I am currently pursuing dual Master's degrees in Data Science (Machine Learning) and Mechanical Engineering at SMU. My desire is very much in-line with your experience. I'd give anything to work with a team trackside and then HQ. I appreciate the info about Formula Student and the Visa.

A big thing for me (aside from my now wife not wanting to move to the uk) was that I couldn't figure out how to properly apply to oxford brook's msc program. This was over 10 years ago but there were a lot of questions I just couldn't answer because I didn't know what they were and couldn't find how to translate my american classes to their format. What the hell are A levels? Like I still don't know to this day.

Thanks for this video Blake. Really fascinating insights. I have one question: Are F1 teams mainly hiring engineers who just finished their degree, or is it possible to join a team with a couple of years of industry experience under their belt?

What did kind of software did you guys use for FEA? Ansys, Abaqus, COMSOL, Nastran or something else? What about CFD? Same software or different ones? And what about shaft and axle design. Which methods? FKM, DIN743 or did you rely on principle stresses in FEA?

Hi Blake, What is your opinion on a short video introduction attached to your CV?
@brrrake
@brrrake Жыл бұрын
Oh I haven't seen this. I'm sure it may be useful, but I'm not entirely sure the HR systems which tend to pass CV's to the hiring managers may always have the capacity to handle video. A cover letter on the other hand will surely always go through, but in addition to that - maybe a video could be useful?
