In “Brubaker” (1980) a new warden, portrayed by Robert Redford comes into a prison, disguised as an inmate, where he sees all types of corruption and scams, which the guards and prison officials are running and a fight begins to stop the faulty system. Based on the book “Accomplices to the Crime: The Arkansas Prison Scandal” and experiences by Thomas O. Murton (who also assisted during the production of the movie) “Brubaker” gets the touch of authenticity, also featuring fine performances by Murray Hamilton, Yaphet Kotto, Jane Alexander and more. The music by Lalo Schifrin supports the ongoing plot well, mostly and carefully set in background the score sneaks into your ears. Schifrin also wrote a handful of (sung) Country music source cues, which, for the sake of the original score aren’t featured here, except the very warm “All For The Love Of Sunshine”. Also not featured here is an album arrangement called “Theme From Brubaker”, which is worth a listen (though not featured in the movie), so you might give it a (recommended) listen. Enjoy!

Lalo Schifrin’s music is transportational. Every note and every phrase punctuates the action of the film. It’s distinctly of its period and that’s why I love it so.

I always like to declare myself a pretty big Schifrin fan but yet I had managed to miss this one to this day. I love the variety of atmospheres here, from grassroots to funk to country to the usual tension-building bits. It's awesome, thank you.

I knew of Brubaker but have never seen it. I will have to attend to this small detail. Meanwhile... Schifrin does Country and Western ( !!!! ) A very nice OST suite of some highly different styles - funk, R & B, action jazz. Gute arbeit, mein freund.

The movie is rather flat; Schifrin did not need to dig deep for this one. One reason is the lack of of character tension in the film. The plot is engaging enough, production values are high, but the characters are 2D. Redford plays the virtuous idealist role he had been perfecting since The Candidate. His character arrives in the movie with no hint of his past and why he would risk his career to fight the system. The other actors are safe 70s faces mostly playing roles within their typecasting: Hamilton as the dense authority figure, Yaphet Kotto as the thoughtful black heavy, etc. Jane Alexander's talent was wasted, Morgan Freeman made his mark in a minor role. A flick longer on potential than delivery, not much for a composer to do here.

I respectfully disagree. This movie is sharp as a tack. Redford plays the struggling not virtuous idealist with mastery. The other actors are not wasted. They shine in their roles. Remember there was a time in western societies in which real people lived their lives without permanent media exposition and emotional displays. There was a time, not many decades ago, in which there was a certain stoical, elegant emotional restraint in everybody’s behaviour that nevertheless an average citizen could decipher easily. This movie and the acting of the characters is an attest to that. The 3rd dimension of the characters is subtle, subdued yet clearly evident. The sountrack is yet another splendid work of musical art of Mr. Schiffrin.
