As a film composer, John Barry was a GOAT. We shall never see his likeness again. I love this score!!!!

In "Raise The Titanic'' (1980) it is discovered that there lies a massive 'treasure' in the wreck of the legendary ocean liner that can be used for military purposes, starting a race between Russia and America to get it during heated days of the cold war. This was a fresh idea and proved to work successfully with the novel by Clive Cussler. However, the movie turned out to be a flop. Although it had a massive production value, the screenplay seemed to be not as dedicated. Nevertheless it is still a nice adventure to return to from time to time. Its music was composed by Britain's fine John Barry, who provided wonderful themes such as the grand "Prelude", the elegant "Memories Of The Titanic" and the music for the diving sequences into the unknown darkness, also to be heard in the movie's opening credits “Deep Quest”. A score that stuck with many for years, which also received a fine re-recording in 1999. However, the original recordings seem to be lost but with help of fans and friends it was possible to extract Barry's original recordings from the movie. The quality is not the very best but it is certainly good enough to share with the public. Enjoy the dive!

It was such a WONDERFUL score to such a sadly mediocre movie. The "prelude" showed shots of the Titanic in all of the glory of construction and launch, so upbeat and positive as the music is....and then, the main theme suddenly took us to the tragic cold depths of the wreck. Beautiful musical "storytelling" as only Barry could do it. Thanks for this restoration!

I _love_ this* film, and the theme music, and have enjoyed reading many of Clive Cussler's novels...the only thing is the level of gore with which Clive filled his novels, and with 'Dirk Pitt' receiving the most awful beatings (etc) by the various "baddies", which fortunately are excluded from the film 'Raise The Titanic'* (I'm glad to say, as I would not wish the treatment Clive wrote also being inflicted upon Anne Archer, who played 'Dana').

Once again, we can hear John Barry's distinctive style as we heard in many wonderful James Bond scores, 'King Kong' (1976), Disney's 'The Black Hole' (1979), 'High Road To China' (1983), 'Out of Africa' (1985), 'Dances With Wolves' (1990), etc.

The re-recording of the complete movie score is wonderful. A gorgeous recording and all the tempos of the various cues in the score are dead on. It’s conducted by Nic Raine who was one of John Barry’s orchestrators.

When I was little I loved researching ship disasters like the Titanic and the Bismarck after reading my mom’s old National Geographic magazines. I would go to the library and read everything I could find on the subjects. During my searches I came across a VHS copy of Raise the Titanic and checked it out from a local library. Let’s just say I was in awe. The John Barry score from the movie was emotional and magical. I will never forget the visual of the beautiful ship surfacing to his powerful music. Also the track called “Memories from the Titanic” is still one of my all time favorite John Barry pieces. It was a special moment for me as a big Titanic fan way before the popular 1997 movie. Thank you for creating this amazing suite from a film that is unfortunately mostly forgotten. 🚢

I have to say, even as a movie lover I always loved film music, but it was all the same to me. I began listening to this channel just to hear the great music, but after time I've definitely came to distinguish these beautiful pieces, as well as their composers, take for instance John Barry's style is very distinct. Also, great film Raise The Titanic.

One of Barry's most beautiful scores, particularly the music that accompanies the discovery of the wreck. Had a pint in the St Ives pub from the film recently. Alec Guiness wasn't there but I could hear his voice....'She was a lovely ship, you know. As long as three rugby pitches and as tall as one of your skyscrapers...'

1:55 - 3:29 of the Main Title It is my favorite part of the entire soundtrack. Whoever has some imagination and knows how to listen carefully will notice that, in the wisdom of John Barry, he used part of the wind instruments to imitate a ship's horn and part of the string instruments to imitate a search radar, directly alluding to the plot of the film, what much of the search for the Titanic is about. Only an artist can think of these things. Barry's genius.

No doubt this is John Barry’s best score. Especially the music of deep underwater sequence is incredibly superb .The score of search light drop sequence is the requiem for Titanic(longer version exists. I listen to that in the theater in 1980)

I've been a HUGE fan of Clive Cussler novels for most of my adult life and always hoped that someone would make films of them. Sadly, this film and Sahara failed both me and at the theaters. The only saving grace with this film is the amazing scene of the great ship resurfacing coupled with the great score by Mr. Barry. Kudos for sharing.
@madlenellul34302 жыл бұрын
I remember reading how Clive Cusslers management made a very poor deal when selling the motion picture rights. This also happened with Sahara. They allowed the film producers to cast and to alter, artistic discretion, much of both screenplays. In doing so they lost the mystery and thrill and twist of the finding of the wreck. However for Raise the Titanic they did hire the British composer of that moment. The great John Barry. At the peak of his career Barry wrote a score that lifted the mediocre acting and writing to higher levels. The two musical highlights the wreck breaking surface and the Titanic finally arriving at New York. So thank you for this marvellous suite of Barry’s music. It’s just so sad that the original tapes followed the Titanic into oblivion……..

In questi periodi, tra compleanni e commemorazioni di compositori, ci sono stati Brad Fiedel, Mark Mancina, Alfred Newman, Angelo Badalamenti, Michael Nyman, Patrick Doyle, Vladimir Cosma, Bill Conti, Michael Kamen, Henry Mancini, Jack Nitzsche, Miklós Rózsa, Christopher Young, Giorgio Moroder, Francis Lai, Krzysztof Komeda, Craig Armstrong, Jan A. P. Kaczmarek, Elliot Goldenthal, Anne Dudley, Max Steiner, Dimitri Tiomkin, Jay Ferguson, Burt Bacharach.🤩

If I remember correctly, it was made from the (UK's) Blu-ray isolated score & effects track, which was included there as a bonus. Some tracks were interrupted by effects, indeed but gladly there was still enough "music only"-material to be featured here. :-) Fred

This is one of my favorite scores from John Barry. As beautiful as the music is, and that it matches the action in the movie scenes, it seems a bit slow and ponderous. It is unlike the scores for James Bond and other action/adventure films having a much faster tempo overall. I wonder if the unhurried music played a part in the film not doing well at the box office? Perhaps that gave many film-goers the impression the movie was slow and dull (in addition to the uninspired script)? Great music, anyway.

This is one of those fun films that nobody remembers. I remember the book on drug store racks and when my (then) boyfriend took me to it I was excited as it was the first book-to-movie I had encountered. I thought it was an exciting adventure and rank it up there with ffolks. Another movie nobody remembers.

This one ranks up there with J Goldsmith's The Swarm in the annals of crap movies with excellent music. The melodic themes are among Barry's best. The inner cuts of action music and sound filler are the usual John Barry, that can often be almost interchangeable between his scores. E.g., Deep Quest (especially) and most of Finding The Cornet, The Flood, The Titanic Undiscovered, and Gene Explores The Titanic could work in any of his James Band scores, and just as well in Dances With Wolves or Out of Africa. He loves those plucked bass sounds under sixth and seventh chords in the horns with strings hanging up high.
